Are the Blue Collar comedy people really hicks?

Or is it just an act to appeal to the hicks that don't understand good comedy?

artsygrrl 02.25.2009 11:52 PM

nice try

pbradley 02.25.2009 11:53 PM

They're probably related to hicks like most midwesterners and find hick culture silly but familiar.

No, but they're just as dreadfully unfunny either way.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 01:50 AM

They're everything that's wrong with america, if that's what you're asking.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 03:24 AM

Um...

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 04:20 AM

Ah.

phoenix 02.26.2009 05:36 AM

oh..

floatingslowly 02.26.2009 10:59 AM

although I don't find him very funny, apparently, Larry the Cable Guy is making $300,000 a week with his act. laughing at the rubes never goes out of style.

yeah ya got insane-backwoods-seemingly-imbred sorts that dont seem to know the first thing about anything, but even they have a sense of culture that is very unique to them.

its a two way street though. "educated folks" often come off as snobby to "hicks", hicks often come off as "ignorent" to "educated folks". i think both mentalites are equally snobbish as well as ignorent. people never like things they dont understand.

i consider myself lucky. ive been exposed, a great deal, to both of these sorts of individuals...both have a lot to offer the world, as well as their local communities...and both do. even if it is just "redneck humour" to most.

whatever.

the worlds awesome. people are awesome. as soon as people realize every culture/background/city/country/town/swamp/ has something to offer the world will be a better place.

just because something isnt what one is used to, doesnt mean its stupid. just like "being educated" doesnt always means someone is smart. i know college graduates i feel as if are, well, stupid. likewise...i know people that dropped out of HS i consider to be highly intelligent. again, it goes both ways though...i aslo know college graduates that are highly intelligent (most were even before they went to college) and i know high school drop outs that are completely stupid.

my mentality has changed greatly over the last year/two years. sometimes im still i dick, but not nearly as often. i still think, though, even dickheads have something to offer. smart and stupid assholes alike...they can sometimes keep stale situations really interesting.

being nice has bennifitted be greatly though...in more recent time. i choose to be nice now, as much as i can...when i can remember to. sometimes i do fuck up. oh well....

you sure like to rant.

Better_Than_You 02.26.2009 03:27 PM

i love rural minnesota. all of my moms family is from there.

people can talk as much shit about hicks as they want but i find something really endearing about people who grew up on farms.

its true.

they often build our houses, too.

fix our cars even.

hicks can be pretty important people.

Around here, Mexicans build our houses and fix our cars.

As for hicks, they gave us Sarah Palin. But if you asked them what they think about Jimmy Carter, they give you blank stares or anti-liberal jargon they heard on the radio.

acousticrock87 02.26.2009 04:42 PM

That was the longest response to "Um..." I have ever seen.

And hardly any comedians are the real deal. Even Mitch Hedberg was a little gimmicky.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 05:56 PM

I always thought most hicks were the close-minded people who talk funny, make meth (or at least sell anhydrous ammonia to meth makers!), beat up gay guys, are usually racist, smell like pig shit, like to shoot things, and just are generally embarassing to the white race. Not all, of course, I'm not going to stereotype them, but I live in a hick town and a LOT of people fit that, uh, "stereotype".

And as pbradley said, yeah, Mexicans are fixing cars, building houses, etc. around here.

So...

Is something garbage just because you found it in the garbage?

Is something art just because you hang it on a wall?

True.

But there's also people that know what the hick stereotypes are and pride themselves on ignorance and stuff.

atsonicpark 02.26.2009 09:29 PM

Either way, I always took "hick" as an insult.

what the hell are you talking about? Most blue collar folks aren't even white!

in fact, a good deal of poor and lower class white folks don't even work!

Edit: My post was responding to suchfriends. But now that pbradley beat me, I think what I said is even funnier...on many levels.

There's this thing called "Blue Collar Comedy"- Jeff Foxworthy, Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall and some other super annoying people.

well that is most definitely true, but I think places like the Midwest, the Northeast and the dirty South have similar demographics, where "non-whites" make up the majority of what the census bureou labels "working class"

the South's population is 50% black
the Midwest is becoming increasingly hispanic (chicago has the second highest mexican population in the US)
and and Northeast is a longstanding domain for immigrant groups and "minorities"

It's the wet-liberal dream - create a straw man argument to be eternally opposed to, never query one's own values because 'at least I'm not some redneck racist'.

"I'm not being funny, I've got mates who are [x], but they eat their own babies. Believe me [in this severely unsubstantiated claim], I know". Because internet italics are always proof.

Not getting at ASP particularly, just the circuitous/ bad logic.

Really? Only liberals create straw man arguments in order to dismiss opposition?
