Music that makes you dumb

Griffith used aggregated Facebook data about the favorite bands and books among students of various colleges and plotted them against the average SAT scores at those schools, creating a tongue-in-cheek statistical look at taste and intelligence.

I know the SATs aren't really reflecting intelligence.. just thought it was cool to share

chairman of the bored 03.01.2009 01:26 PM

according to this i should be into norah jones, phish, and the shins...ack...haha people who listen to disturbed are smarter than people who listen to aerosmith

deflinus 03.01.2009 01:41 PM

man, smart people must dig sufjan stevens a lot

ihateyouth 03.01.2009 01:45 PM

oh please...

ihateyouth 03.01.2009 01:46 PM

It would be more accurate if they found out how they get the music. If they buy, download, listen to the radio, etc. That would (maybe) construct a theory.

vulva 03.01.2009 01:48 PM

More accurate? Dude, it's not accurate at all. It's very tongue in cheek and just based on minor stats. It's something you're meant to have a laugh about and then make reference to it as a joke when arguing futile points. Don't take the internet so seriously, you'll be a happier person for it.

SYRFox 03.01.2009 01:51 PM

HAHAHA
I laughed at the fact that the Counting Crows are so high

I know, I know... I just feel bad for Virgil Griffith.

Talking of being dumb - what exactly are the numbers at the top and bottom supposed to refer too?

greedrex 03.01.2009 02:13 PM

no Yoof....

music that makes you dumb in a good way; nautical almanac, runzilstern and gurgelstock, prick decay

Sonic Youth 37 03.01.2009 03:59 PM

According to this, I didn't take the SAT. Also, am I color-blind or is Beethoven listed as "Indie" music?

Derek 03.01.2009 04:02 PM

Misc and Indie are like the same colour I think.

That makes ZERO fucking sense. All those damn pastel colors.

sarramkrop 03.01.2009 04:06 PM

Every time I read these threads I hate music and myself in general. Partly it's my fault, but you also need to take responsability for being stupid. I don't know why, but I want you to die.

radarmaker 03.01.2009 04:36 PM

Red Hot Chilli Peppers are in the upper half. That alone renders any possible interpretations null & void, however tenuous.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 03.01.2009 06:10 PM

Why is Greenday higher than jazz?

Glice 03.01.2009 06:21 PM

Isn't this based on what the individual says they like? So, a broad genre probably says the individual isn't too decisive, or interested, in a specific band, indicating a lack of concentration. So saying they like a single band shows they can fixate on one thing, or concentrate clearly, or make decisions.

This is a faint interpretation based on a non-empirical study. Happy internetting!

Why such a large gap between classical and Beethoven?

vulva 03.01.2009 07:46 PM

Beethoven>>>>>>classical I guess

If you say you like 'classical', it just says you're a dick who doesn't really know what you're talking about.

If you say you're into Beethoven, you might not know what you're on about, but you do have BALLS like STEEL.

We're talking about facebook here, the people that say they like jazz on facebook are mostly pretetious morons. I like jazz; facebook is not the place to talk about it.

demonrail666 03.01.2009 07:59 PM

where does liking The Wonderstuff put me then?

Kuhb 03.01.2009 08:00 PM

Or you get people who say they like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Jazz.

haha Lil Wayne

I say I like classical music but with always the addition of "I only listen to classical musical occasionally".

demonrail666 03.01.2009 08:06 PM

I tend to follow my mentioning of liking classical music with, 'but only when it's on adverts'.

Lurker 03.01.2009 08:08 PM

Hahaha.

Lurker 03.01.2009 08:09 PM

I listen to BBC 3 a lot. I really do.

demonrail666 03.01.2009 08:10 PM

Only because you get lost on the way to ITV3

ZEROpumpkins 03.02.2009 01:31 AM

Surely this must say something if more commercial music (Beyonce etc) is lower down. Or at least the fact that classical music is an epic outlier of intelligence.

Okay, since east coasters that aren't concerned with Ivy League or West Coast school don't take the SAT usually...I looked up my basic ACT>SAT conversion and I should be listening to Beethoven exclusively, but I run the entire gambit. Oh well.

I'm the sort of prick who says "I like some classical, but I'm more into baroque really." You can't beat a banging fugue, I tells you.

Savage Clone 03.02.2009 01:43 PM

Postal Service, as always, hanging out right there in The Middle Of The Road.

pbradley 03.02.2009 01:45 PM

John Coolidge Adams... ?

Sufjan Stevens also scores high on the "Music That Makes You Stabby" index.

Norma J 03.03.2009 02:25 AM

Most 'noise'. it just stirs up your mind and rattles your thoughts into confusion. and then makes you want to drink cough syrup.
