Yr Noise tricks

Share with me your noise tricks.
Are there special technics you use?
Any particular pedals??
Tell me everything you know because my tricks(if that's what you can call it) are very lame.

_slavo_ 06.16.2006 06:44 AM

the combination BOSS OD/2 overdrive-distortion/BOSS DD5 digital delay always comforts me while creating piles of feedback drone.
plus the awesome technique of waving guitar in front of the amp.

PunkerViolence 06.16.2006 06:45 AM

ive thrown my guitar on the floor and ran my foot across it (influence:Steve albini)...and detuned it while holding it upto the amp.......and turn your volume right up.

Onani Nic 06.16.2006 06:58 AM

i think i'd been playign my bass for about two months before i spent more time seeing what noises I could make come out of my practice amp.

Early experiments included a $25 distortion pedal and a badmitton racket. It was a lot more fun than reading a learn to play bass book.

The other guy in my band makes some really cool noises using just a cheap multi effects pedal, a cheap mixing desk and a guitar.

val-holla-ing 06.16.2006 07:07 AM

delay and feedback + knob turning + octave effects that lead to some rather pleasant drone. i don't really play much anymore, though. i like getting it on through my laptop.

i still play my saxophone through delay, though.

Onani Nic 06.16.2006 07:36 AM

I have the sweet Danelctro "Reel Echo" tape reel emulator pedal which i can make really cool drones just using a mic. It can make the friction between my nuts and a microphone sound good.

candymoan 06.16.2006 07:58 AM

i bought a second hand violin bow..
turn the volume up and drone close to the amp..
you can also stick a drumstick beneath the strings to raise them..
bowing that way is easier..
mix and twist all the effects..
add computer generated noise..
play against a backdrop of a television tuned to a talk show..
loop samples from porn flicks..
loop samples from politician speeches..

possibilities are endless...

_slavo_ 06.16.2006 08:20 AM

I loaded my sampler with snippets of Merzbow/Masonna/K2 outtakes and some home made drones and planning to have a garage noise session tonight. hope it's gonna be a real blast.

wish me luck, we're gonna probably tape the session down

fishmonkey 06.16.2006 08:37 AM

take 1 beer bottle... or a glass slide is good also,
add 1 phase shifter pedal
add 1 amp turned to 10

let rip

jon boy 06.16.2006 08:42 AM

take one amp, one contact mic and a kitchen utensil of your own choice and bobs yr uncle. word.

Trasher02 06.16.2006 09:38 AM

Thanks guys, I gotta write shit down.
My noise techniques involves the feedback of pedals, superawesome guitar waving in front of an amp and screwdrivers.
Some of these are very helpfull thanks!

RIPfrey05 06.16.2006 11:07 AM

I've had loads of fun with a small mobile speaker. I wired this speaker into the back of my amp just by putting the wires into he holes on the back of the speaker (where the wires connect to the speaker) ok anyway...yeah you wire in a little speaker (mine is from a 1971 chevy impala) take this and grind it against your pickups/ strings/ flick switches/ add echo/ wah/ whatever... awesome.

Danny Himself 06.16.2006 11:10 AM

I have a broken voice-changing machine. All it does now is buzz in three different ways. I hold it against the pickups and yell into it, and yeah.

Blue Boxes are good too. With anything.

RIPfrey05 06.16.2006 11:14 AM

I also have a hollowbody that makes mad ass feedback.. i like to hold it against the amp and yell into the F holes..

king_buzzo 06.16.2006 11:22 AM

wah + dist=mad as fuck feedback, turn other pedals on as well and turn them on and off rapedetaly (spelling?)

some remote control/buttons ect. next to the guitar really weorks when you press the button

on my cheapo multi effects if you turn on any kind of dist it makes the pickups sensitive you can sing in them and you hear the sound from the amp

enough for now...gotta take a crap

nomadicfollower 06.16.2006 11:25 AM

Try to circut bend something. I haven't ever tried doing it, but it's supposed to be great and really noisey.

Pax Americana 06.16.2006 11:28 AM

Sometimes when I'm swinging my guitar around in front of my amp and getting crazy feedback, I bust my car keys out and rake them across the strings which makes all kinds of crazy noises. I also like to bash my old strat against stuff and bang on the neck to get those hollow, ambient kinds of sounds.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.16.2006 11:29 AM

I only use delay and distortion. The rest is just nails and drills.

EDIT: I also cheat and mix it all up on my computer.

king_buzzo 06.16.2006 11:37 AM

rub yr electric over you acoustic. basically make a slide out of the acoustic

I've done that before. Sound good, especially with thick strings.

nomadicfollower 06.16.2006 11:47 AM

Hah, my sister just showed me this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtUiQJc7ZMI

Actually gave me some good ideas. Watch until he does the Motorbike effect, it's pretty neat.

finding nobody 06.16.2006 11:59 AM

turning high knobs up and low knobs down gives more feedback. be careful though.

m^a(t)h 06.16.2006 12:08 PM

i like to put a guitar cable in my mouth/

king_buzzo 06.16.2006 12:22 PM

elephant noise is cool

Mackle 06.16.2006 12:54 PM

You should all use a Line 6 Echo Park. Best thing I ever got for noise!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 06.16.2006 01:02 PM

feedback loops, ring mods, octaves, tweaking delay knob for pitch shifting, etc. Sticking stuff under the strings, picking behind the bridge, putting pressure behind the bridge to bend harmonics and open notes, squeezing on the guitar neck so it bends slightly. Taking off my guitar strap and violently shaking the guitar.

umjammer atomsk 06.16.2006 01:09 PM

I have a cheapo little kiddy keyboard with like 35 effects and when the battaries get low, instead of turning off, it will automatically mix a ton of sounds, beats and instruments together and combine it with this strange organic sounding wall of lo-fi feedback. It's just something cool to fuck around with because you have no control over what it's going to do and it's always different and sounds fucking awesome.

Pablitzen 06.16.2006 02:53 PM

i like using my cellphone over the pickups...i don't know why, but it creates some pops and clicks...
also i like some low rate and high depth flanger or phaser and over that use a distortion...

scott v 06.16.2006 03:03 PM

my tricks are a secret.

finding nobody 06.16.2006 03:05 PM

the dom and i built this big ass "noise box"

it's like 4 ft. by 4 ft.. it has like 27 knobs. makes great noise. i got a recording if anyones interested

this makes me wish i had a wammy bar for my strat

TheDom 06.16.2006 03:33 PM

That noise box is sweet.

The song we made is so original. Its like free jazz meets drone meets harsh noise meets japanoise meets space meets noiserock meets 'pigfuck' meets no wave meets grind meets vacuum cleaner.

Knob twiddling is boring as hell. Get physical and fuck shit up.

finding nobody 06.16.2006 03:34 PM

yeah, in order to get good stuff out of it we gotta break out the baseball bat

TheDom 06.16.2006 03:37 PM

Or the lawnmower.

RIPfrey05 06.16.2006 04:00 PM

or the vibrator....

HaydenAsche 06.16.2006 04:18 PM

MC505 Drum Machine + High Octave + Super Low Pitch + Goofy Settings + Delay = Awesomeness

alyasa 06.17.2006 10:24 AM

Try this, one guitar amp, one of this:

and this:

Set the depth and res of the flanger really high, max; and the rate about medium to medium high, the manual low. For the distortion, just make it really distorted and put the volume at low(you can use the guitar amp volume to make it louder)The other settings are equalizer setings, set according to tone preference. Then play your guitar, anyway you want and while it's sustaining feedback, twiddle with the res knob...

Macaulay Culkin 06.17.2006 01:58 PM

It's all about the oscillator!!

Inhuman 06.17.2006 02:59 PM

Thrasher02, I recorded a quick sample of the technique I use for sludge metal. First, use a reverb with a huge room size (you can choose presets on most computers for this, and they have it on Fruityloops). I use my mixer set to "cathedral" and it gives me a very long reverb sound with tonnes of echo. I apply this to both guitar and mic. Ride the side of your pic up and down the strings while breathing in (making a high pitch sound). Sounds amazing.

Here's the sample

Enjoy!

golden child 06.17.2006 04:03 PM

im ordering this sick oscillator soon, its gonna slay!

feedback loops are what ive been doing alot of lately.

Inhuman 06.17.2006 08:45 PM

Another one I use often is using center pickup and leaning the guitar against the amp. I then use the volume control to just barely let it feedback. This acquires an "Ono Soul" type of sound. Grab a second guitar or sample the feedback, and record over!
