Albums you have listened to this year that sucked bad?

dredg- The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion
Sonic Yoth- The Eternal
Wilco- Wilco (The Album)

SuperCreep 05.19.2009 07:06 PM

The new Antony (not that he's ever good anyway), Faust, and Neil Young are the only ones I've listened to this year that have "sucked bad."

I really haven't gotten around to much music from this year.

atsonicpark 05.19.2009 09:26 PM

New future of the left is pretty boring and bland.

That album Balf Qu... er. You know. That one band by that one album wasn't appealing to my ears.

New Animal Collective is pretty boring. But it's got its moments, it's not completely worthless.

I dunno, I haven't heard anything that sucked BAD, but I haven't heard a lot that blew me away either.

automatic bzooty 05.19.2009 10:41 PM

New YYYs was fairly disappointing.

And, uh, not that I was expecting much outta Lilly Allen's last album, but... yeah, fuckin' noxious. At least her first had a few funny/catchy moments here and there.

Sonic Youth 37 05.19.2009 11:07 PM

New YYYS was disappointing after Is Is, but Is Is was mostly rerecorded older songs. Still better than show your bones.

Hmm...sucky albums?
Hush-Asobi Seksu, such a let down

SYRFox 05.20.2009 02:00 AM

The Birdy Nam Nam album is probably the worst album I've heard in the five past years. It's rare that I find an album completely worthless. It ain't got anything good. Doesn't even make me want to shake my head the tiniest bit, which is a shame for dancefloor techno.

I also hated the Neon Indian EP, Psychic Chasms, though I kind of like what they did with their voices, that kind of MGMT-electropop just ain't my thing - they'll probably be super-hyped when their album will come out.

The Phantom Band album is overrated in my opinion. I kept on reading it was one of the best of the years and I didn't like it at all. Same for Pontiak - Maker.

Other than that, albums that have disappointed me: Redjetson - Other Arms (I LOVED New General Catalogue), Condo Fucks - Fuckbook (okay, it sounds like Yo La Tengo having fun... but I just don't find it good), Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz! (there's like... 2 good songs on it), The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

But I think I've listened to roughly 60 albums released this year and this must be 10 bad albums, so I'd say it's not that much fortunately.

LifeDistortion 05.20.2009 02:08 AM

I listened to the new Eminem album on myspace today just out of curiousity. Seems like he's trying to make the "Marshell Mathers EP" again, its not exciting.

the last song kicks major ass though.

Anyway, "Repo" by Black Dice is not only this year's worst album but probably the worst album ever recorded.

atsonicpark 05.20.2009 02:23 AM

Yeah, I forgot about Repo. I blocked it from my mind. I listened once, thought it was terrible shit, listened again while medicated and thought it was.. alright.. listened with a clear mind again recently and can't help but think, 'Wow, this band is AWFUL.' 3 dudes making random noises on a sampler, with no coherency or flow. Just a total bullshit mess.

demonrail666 05.20.2009 03:01 AM

The Bonnie Prince Billy album was awful. Gospel choirs are never a good idea except on gospel albums, and even then they're a bit on the shit side.

Schizophrenia 05.20.2009 04:56 AM

Wavvves (pretty boring and pointless but hey that's just my opinion)
new magik markers'

can't remember more

and i didn't like repo too

Green Magnesium 05.20.2009 12:56 PM

I listened to approx. the first 3 songs of that Black Dice album and then shut it off in disgust. Please tell me the whole thing doesn't go on like that.

It's like a less disturbed Wolf Eyes.

gmku 05.20.2009 01:12 PM

Picked up Count Five's Psychotic Reaction and listened to it for the first time this year. What a bunch of hooey. What was Bangs talking about?

PAULYBEE2656 05.20.2009 01:48 PM

black dice..... its the only one tha really left me going meh..... its typical black dice, promises much but delivers with the power of a damp squib....

the yyy is ok, its not as bad as you guys make it out but it just sounds like them cashing in on the whole crystal castles thing.... ok no mrore no less... as for ac, magik markers and future of the left..i disagree.... real good albums each and all....

SYRFox 05.20.2009 01:49 PM

I love the Black Dice album. Follows Load Blown's direction, which is fine by me as it is my favorite from the band and one of my favorite albums ever (yeah!)

atsonicpark 05.20.2009 01:50 PM

*rips off own pubic hair and smokes it*

Look, I make performance art now.

batreleaser 05.20.2009 01:51 PM

why do people not like the eternal? its the first sy full length in a while that seems to try new things and pull them off.

sucked bad; new oldham (honestly, the first record hes ever done without one song that moves me, pretty sad considering hes one of the most gifted writers of our generation)

future of the left, but they always sucked

"balf quarry" is the best markers record yet, people will realize that after a few listens.

that article was a joke man. he listened to "psychotic reaction" the track, which is amazing, and then wrote an article about the six records they did after, but they never did do anything after, he was jst imagining.

atsonicpark 05.20.2009 01:53 PM

IN MY OPINION... since I've refused to give it elsewhere....... I will give it this one special time... BQ sounded like an extended drum solo with farty guitar notes over top (which some idiot critic will call "jazzy" no doubt) and awful lyrics. Every song sounds exactly the same. And it's boring as hell.

Fixed.

Absolutism is too dogmatic on a democratic thing like the internet. Silly man.

atsonicpark 05.20.2009 01:56 PM

the eternal is so cool. Malibu Gas Station sounds like a sparta locals song. Good album.

'Carburetor Dung' was the joke, not 'Psychotic Reactions', which was an album they released in 1966. And it is pretty shit.

batreleaser 05.20.2009 02:01 PM

yeah dude, i love it. it sounds like they have gone back to a more out of tune no wave style while simultaneously opening up the sound and introducing a more proggy and expansive epic feel, the songs sound like they are building on top of one another as they go along. its really what i want sy to sound like now. i feel people who hate it maybe had sonic nurse or rather ripped as thier first youth record.

batreleaser 05.20.2009 02:02 PM

i know its an album, but the article was a joke based on the album. they were one hit wonders and he was imagining if they had a long multi-album career.

So I'm stuck with this loser album. Anybody want it?

batreleaser 05.20.2009 02:07 PM

haha, no im good man. i actually have a torrent version of it, but only for the one song.

skateboarders; member kerry getz used psychotic reaction for his part in habitat's "mosaic" video?

gmku 05.20.2009 02:08 PM

It's really rare and in mint condition. Every serious music fan should have a copy in his collection.

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's are way off mark now, I can't stand them any more.

summer, you don't like the Eternal? I LOVE it...

Yeah, and Massage The History sounds a lot like The Diamond Sea...

summer 05.20.2009 03:31 PM

I dunno, The Eternal is probably, if I were to be honest with myself (instead of being silly), my second favorite of Sonic Youth from this decade. It's right behind Sonic Nurse. But.. don't give one of your reasons for loving it that it "tries new things". It doesn't, it's a rehash of everything they have ever done put it one neat little package.

automatic bzooty 05.20.2009 03:43 PM

summer, man, i don't get you. you think the eternal sucked bad, but is your second favorite since NYCG+F?

summer 05.20.2009 03:54 PM

1. sonic nurse
2. the eternal
3. nycg+f
4. rather ripped
5. murray street

Schizophrenia 05.20.2009 04:12 PM

I'd say...

NYC G&F
MS
Eternal
SN
RR

you said you like rather ripped and don't like the eternal and nycgf, so why the fuck is rather ripped below them in yr ranking?

that's some dumb shit

summer 05.20.2009 04:55 PM

Cause I listened to them again and decided I changed my mind :O
Not to say rankings matter though, Murray Street is still my #2.

This is true to an extent.

A record doesn't really have to do new things to be good, though. I mean, do you only listen to records that do new things? I bet you have some of them in your collection that you still enjoy while they don't sound 'new'.

summer 05.20.2009 05:06 PM

Oh of course it doesn't have to try new things to be good. I just don't get why people are saying The Eternal is doing new things because there isn't a single new thing on it, except that Malibu Gas Station has one of the only guitar solos in a Sonic Youth song that I can recall.

Chapel Hill has a guitar solo too. I haven't read the majority of the posts on the eternal threads. Are many people saying they are doing new things on it?

YES. I fucking love it for pretty much those exact reasons.

atsonicpark 05.21.2009 12:49 AM

And that's fine!

I'm just not into that sampler-driven noise-explorations-to-nowhere. I'm not on enough drugs. Like Growing's stuff (after a certain point).. that's all it is, random sounds floating around. Communicates nothing, bores me to death.
