D'Angelo's Voodoo is my favorite album of all time
I think I'm pretty firm in my opinion by now that this album is prettyyyyy amazing and everyone should hear it at least once, even if this isn't your kind of music
|
Didn't you already start a D'Angelo thread? Anyway, I don't know about VOODOO, but BROWN SUGAR is pretty untouchable.
|
I'm downloading it now. Seriously though, if this ends up being shit I'm gonna punch you so hard.
|
hahahaha
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to demonrail666 again. |
I finished listening to it. It's a lot better than i imagined. It's always cool listening to something that I'd ordinarily just ignore. Thanks.

d'angelo was fucking terrible. what the fuck is happening to this board?
if youre gonna listen to some trashy false-soul, why not prince or something? or better yet just get "payback" and listen to the real thing. |
1. Prince is trashy false-soul? What??? Listen to "The Beautiful Ones" and tell me dude's got no soul.
2. D'Angelo can sing! No love for the Soulquarians Collective?? |
fuck the Rhythm & Bullshit.
goddamn fucking slow jams. I hate that SHIT! |

yr just upset because yr lady makes you listen to Boyz II Men. |
hahahah! she makes me listen to sade and amy winehouse and all sorts of fuckers I don;t even know, but no motownphilly is back again!
|
Rob, did you know that Sade has something in common with La Winehouse? Apparently she's a bit of a skag/crack fiend these days too...
|
it's what I hear. sade is an ex model and she has been known to have some mental issues.
tis a shame. I have friends that are still in love with her from the 80's and shit. winehouse will be dead before she is 30. i todl my g/f that about 4 years ago and she has not wanted to believe it but she has seen the signs I seeeeeeee |
I hate most newer R&B, but D'Angelo isn't too bad. I wouldn't want to listen to it by choice, but if I were somehow in some sort of Love-and-Basketball-esque scenario, I would prefer it play over the other stuff that would probably play. He can sing well, and most of the beats are more original than the standard plain R&B beats nowadays.
|
I'd love to be Rob's neighbour, just so I could play Jodeci albums full blast at three in the morning.
|
He'd be calling the cops while you belt out "THAT GIRL IS POISON!"
|
He's such a hater, is our Rob.
|
After hours of him screaming at you, finally turn it off and give your sincerest apology.
Then start playing Beck. |
d'angelo is awesome but i'm in the camp that likes raphael saadiq better
|
You are in the camp that Rob is going to invade on his mighty steed in the middle of the night and decapitate all of its inhabitants.

no worries, i could probably save myself by giving him a heart attack by repeating the simple fact that ROCK WAS A SUBGENRE OF R&B AND NEVER WOULD HAVE BEEN SEPERATED FROM R&B IF IT WASN'T COMMERCIALIZED TO APPEAL TO THE WHITE AUDIENCE |
Haha, that is Rob's "Clatto Verata Nicto" :)
|
And he'll counter by repeating the simple fact that slow jams are a subgenre of chronic diarrhea

it takes alot of skill to hit the brown note ![]() |
Bloody hell, it's Rob after an hour on the sun bed. THE TRUTH IS OUT!
|
HAHAHAHA, I knew he looked like somebody!
|
I Love This Record.
|
Raphael Saadiq is a genius.
|
Quote:
Seriously. It's almost uncanny. Rob is officially the walrus of Rawk. |
the resemblance is not that huge, i think he looks more like Iron&Wine if anything
|
To be honest I still haven't heard much Saadiq. Should I give Instant Vintage a try?
|
no i like prince, hes got soul for sure, but i still dont know how authentic anything called "soul" or "funk" after 1975 could be.
|
Who fucking cares about authenticity? That bit doesn't hold weight at all. Yeah, well, noise music these days must not be authentic. "I don't see how you can all anything post-1920's Italian Futurist noise manifesto authentic."

might as well, d'angelo is on it |

rock was and is an amalgasm of blues, country, hillbilly music, gospel, soul, etc., not what came to be called R&B. |

Repped! |
anyone got any teddy Pendergras?? ha ha!!!!

nothing came to be called R&B, that term is older than rock&roll and older than the term soul. R&B is a mix of all the african american genres at the time. gospel, blues and jazz. Rock 'n Roll is the same thing with the addition of bluegrass/country, soul is the same thing with a different name because kids didn't want to admit they listen to the same genre as their parents. The term R&B was a replacement for "race music" which came to be considered an offensive term for black styles, and was applied to all black genres including rock and roll don't take it from me, chuck berry is much more of an authority I got a rockin' pneumonia I need a shot of rhythm and blues |

That's interesting. So where did something like Rockabilly fall within all of that? |
good question, i can't even tell the difference between normal rnr and rockabilly, all i know is the name is a mix of rock and hillbilly and that it's known as the first style of rock that was mostly played by white people. so i'd guess it's just rock with country/bluegrass influence more to forefront, i can't really hear the difference but i'd imagine it was probably clear to people back then
having heard the mix so many times it seems natural. But back in the days country music wasn't supposed to include any percussion, so having a percussionist playing black style rhythms under country guitars must have sounded absolutely insane to the people at the time |
