Back from the second hand store.

I was just popping by my favorite second hand store while I was visiting Bodø (I live 2 hours away). And I found some real nuggets there.

Mark Lanegan Band - Bubblegum
Aw, you all gotta agree that this is a really great record. Amazing songs, and two killer duets by the whiskey-and-ciggie-voiced man and Polly Jean Harvey.
Fantasic record, mine for just a couple of bucks.

Bob Mould - Bob Mould
Okay, the cover does not look appealing at all, but this record is very fine. Bob Moulds sweet voice, and some really, really good popsongs.
Also very cheap.

And finally this one(on vinyl).
The Cars - Panorama
I had only heard Just What I needed by the band, and that was one hell of a song. But this record, meh, couple of good tracks, but mainly shit.
Mint condition by the way, 3 bucks.

What do ya think about these albums?

porkmarras 06.19.2006 11:42 AM

Are they limited editions?

screamingskull 06.19.2006 11:49 AM

i'm going to see Bob Mould on thursday!

DemonBox 06.19.2006 11:50 AM

hardly. But I guess that cars record is not that easy to find. anyway, I was just wondering what you thougth about them musically speaking. not on a rareness scale:P

After their initial success & before they embraced MTV pop fully, The Cars made their third album, Panorama. It finds The Cars disregarding their previous formulas & on their way to discovering their more pop-friendly sound that they would realize with Shake It Up. Regarding Panorama's sound, one can detect the influence of Devo, Sparks, Kraftwerk & perhaps Ben Orr's purchasing of some keyboard equipment & the dismissal of Greg Hawkes. Despite being keyboard-laden, it also features some of Elliot Easton's most jammin' guitar in parts. Some fans swear by it, some hate it. The 1978 s/t is their best in my opinion. It's an all-time great & simply a must. It was artists like The Cars and Bruce Springsteen that helped keep guitar rock alive. Their second record, Candy-O, is still very good as well. Personally, I like Panorama, but I'm someone that likes the even poppier Shake It Up & Heartbeat City.

Bob Mould's work with Sugar, the band he formed after Husker Du, is pretty good stuff all around.

I like the Bob Mould hubcap album more than some of his others. Good songs on it. There's a fucking great song he didn't include on it that's a b-side of the Egoverride single called Eternally Fried. He used a drum machine on that album.

porkmarras 06.19.2006 12:50 PM

I wonder if anyone has got Nova Mob's album(i think it's the only one they've made but i'm not sure). Not a great record per se but the song 'Old Empire' rocks da house maaann!

I'd have loved to have gone to that if it weren't for the drive up to B'ham being too much like hard work for a Thursday.

I couldn't do that to you, it would ruin your street cred. People would just think how kind you are taking the poor old man to the concert.

i dont have any street cred, likeing sonic youth is unbelievebly unkool in this part of the world. although if i was to wear a sonic youth shirt but had no idea who they were, then i'd have street cred.

CHOUT 06.19.2006 10:37 PM

You know what's a good album?

Too bad it didn't really take off, because it's really good, better to me than lots of Bob's solo albums. It's a pretty heavily layered album with lots of cool sounds.
I saw Grant play at taste of minnesota a couple years ago, and it was sad. The Knack were playing loud about a block away and he's playing on this small stage by himself with a small crowd trying to compete with their volume.

Amaranth 06.19.2006 10:49 PM

How is the Mark Lanegan Band album? Is it good? It seems interesting. I think I have heard some stuff on myspace and liked it.

It's awsome, I would call it updated white man blues. Check out the song wedding dress, one of the best songs on this really strong album. It kinda sounds like something Tom Waits would have done (around the Rain Dogs era). Smashing record, I'm positive that you'll love it. It's well worth the money.

Hah. You know, I thought about doing that the last time I walked by Hot Topic. Thought about going in and buying some Ts of bands I've never gotten into, like Rancid or something new and teeny-boppish like System of a Down. I think it would kind of amusing to answer "So you like Rancid?" with "No, I have no idea who they are, actually. I like their shirts, though."

gmku 06.21.2006 11:36 AM

I want a No Neck Blues Band shirt. Maybe I'll screen one of my own. The old codgers I hang with would be all, "Oh, Gary, so you're into the blues stuff now," and I'd get to tell them NNCK sounds nothing like any blues band they've ever heard. Yeah. That would be cool.
