SYG, I need a job

:( There is no work to be found. anywhere. :(

Sonic Youth 37 06.13.2009 11:16 PM

Ditto'd. 8 applications and not even a "we're sorry, but we're not interested"

deflinus 06.13.2009 11:24 PM

"yeah, unless you want to work 40 hours a week"

Everyneurotic 06.13.2009 11:25 PM

yep, i hear all of that.

truth of the matter is, i can't work a straight job myself.

amerikangod 06.13.2009 11:25 PM

How about an h-job?

Everyneurotic 06.13.2009 11:37 PM

no, thanks, i don't need one now.

i do appreciate the thought, though.

pbradley 06.14.2009 12:52 AM

I've been looking for work for almost a year now.

how are you surviving? I've been out of full time work for almost six months, I can't imagine another six like this... I'm running out of savings.

pbradley 06.14.2009 02:01 AM

Leeching off my parents is how I'm surviving.

_slavo_ 06.14.2009 02:58 AM

I'm so happy I have a job that I like, a boss that I don't loathe and which pays pretty well.
Phoenix, I don't believe that in a city like Melbourne there wouldn't be enough jobs for you. Just give it a time and you'll find one you like.

in my experience, work is not hard to find. there is no pay to be found anywhere.

in all seriousness, i'm not just trying to be semantic here. being unemployed sucks donkey balls. you get depressed, you have nowhere to go during the day, and no money to go out at night and pretty soon you find yourself not leaving the house for days on end... so find somewhere to go work even if they don't pay you. volunteer like a motherfucker. you'll make some new friends, and pretty soon you'll discover that money is not the only form of payment you can recieve for work.

i've been out of work for a year and a half, and i still haven't found a "job-type job" with regular hours and a paycheck. but for the last six months i've been able to mostly quit borrowing money from the parents by working on an organic farm. i don't get a whole lot in the way of cash, and sometimes none at all. but i get paid all the food i can eat (except protien) - and the best food i've had in my life at that, weed, beer, rides to places, favors, friendship and if it came down to it (which it might soon) a roof over my head. in short, most of what i wanted the cash for in the first place and couple of things you can't buy with money... most importantly, the energy to get out of bed everyday and stay positive even though i'm dead broke.

pbradley 06.14.2009 03:14 AM

Unemployment can also be FUNemployment!

Having nothing to lose is to have everything to gain.

phoenix 06.14.2009 03:19 AM

yes, all of the above problems you've posted. :*(

yeh, Im definately thinking of starting to do some volunteer work. My biggest problem at the moment is transport, since PT where I am pretty well sucks.. and I'm a fair way out of the city. (I've not had a car since I crashed it in late 07.. )

I guess. To be honest though, my time management is a little better when I actually have something to manage. Having nothing to do, makes me do.... nothing.

pbradley 06.14.2009 03:28 AM

That's kind of sad.

phoenix 06.14.2009 03:34 AM

ha! exactly. :(

I had big big plans for this year.. and it's just.. gone.

you don't have to live near a city to work on a farm (in fact it helps not to)... although getting to the farm can still be a problem. i bike the 10 miles to the farm i work at if it's not raining even though i have a car, to save money on gas and because i no longer pay for insurance. if i remember correctly, the future where it's hot and dark is in australia... you should check out this website

http://www.wwoof.com.au/

if my memory serves me poorly, here is the general site

chrome noise tape 06.14.2009 03:48 AM

the world situation it's not famous, every day a thousand of people get unemployed in a while, and the financial crisis seems far away to slow down...in last case do like every one...ROB A BANK!...and hit the road with your looove!

phoenix 06.14.2009 03:49 AM

There aren't really any farms near me.. and to be honest I'm not sure I could be a farm girl. I'd give it a go, though I'm sure I'd not last very long haha.

The website looks like something for working holiday visa people, though?

I teach 22 hours a week only, but then the preparing stuff, marking tests, planning school trips and meetings and what not amount to about 40 also...
What's wrong with 40 hours, it's standard.

you don't have to be a farm girl to work on a farm.

everyone i work with on the organic farm is college educated, fairly hip and most of them have other careers that they can't find work in... more like just girls that happen to be on a farm. i didn't think i'd be cut out for it either, i'd never dug up a potato or an onion in my life... but now i'm in great shape, flat stomach, nice tan and i didn't pay for any of it.

still, if yr the type that thinks nature is gross, don't like fresh air and sun, never been camping... then no it's not for you.

...for some it is a cheap way to travel, for others it's a lifestyle and a way to find the next job.

I love nature.. and fresh air. Sun not so much, but I could wear a hat. Camping is alright.

To be honest I think it's the idea that from where I am, it would be a lot of travel to even get to a farm.

Though.. if I could spend some time picking berries at the place I went to over the summer.. mmmmmm that would be wonderful.

floatingslowly 06.15.2009 08:24 AM

I'll hire you!

please let me know a day in advance, though. I'll need to fire someone first.

phoenix 06.15.2009 08:28 AM

erm, Im not sure that's a good idea. Paperwork is not my strong point. I could answer phones and accidentally hang up on people in a 'cute' australian accent.. but that is about as far as my skill base would go in yr line of work I would think

floatingslowly 06.15.2009 08:31 AM

that's too bad. :(

I was wanting to fire somebody.

one of my minions is late!

actually, I'm not sure I would fire her over that...but I might yell some! well, I WILL yell some, but I won't mean it. I'm too fucking nice as a boss!

I think I may demand (for a 10th time) that she picks up my laundry. she'll most likely just give me the evil-eye.

it's hard to maintain iron-fisted authority when you've known someone since they were 12.

phoenix 06.15.2009 08:45 AM

ha! I have always pushed the limits of what it means to be late at work.

Prisstina 06.15.2009 10:01 AM

Get a retail job. They're always hiring.

Lies. At least not in this town they aren't. I'd be up for anything except food service. I can't work food service. I'd knife someone during training.

afterthefact 06.15.2009 10:19 AM

I hear you can make like thousands daily just by reading emails and filling out surveys. Check out Craigslist.

buda belat?! Ye'Buda medhanit tolo tegenyaleh!
(She has the Evil Eye? You Need to find some protection quick!)

this should protect you from the buda (evil eye), ethiopians wear them for just such a purpose, they also keep as much of their body covered when out on the street, hence all the netela and shama (shawls and linen wraps). I keep my ye'buda medhanit on my neck everywhere, and I can vouch on several occasions its working ;)

yeah she does. she got it from her mom!

however, if I were afraid of witches, I would have never married.

ps: I gave my ethiopian voodoo necklace away.
