Jim O'Rourke Returns With New Album


Visitors set for September release via Drag City.

It's been eight years since onetime Sonic Youth member, Wilco producer, and overall indie institution Jim O'Rourke put out a new solo album of original material onDrag City. That's set to change September 8 in the U.S. (August 31 in the UK), when the genre-skipping artist unveils his newest LP, Visitors. (Via The Wire.)
According to the label, the record is more song-oriented than his excursions into avant-electronics (see: stuff like 2001's I'm Happy, and I'm Singing, and a 1, 2, 3, 4 or 2007's collaboration with Merzbow and Carlos Giffoni, Electric Dress). It's apparently more in line with O'Rourke's somber instrumental LP Bad Timing than his sly pop records, Eureka and Insignificance.

Technically, it's not set to change, it'll still be 8 years since he released an album.

The first thing I read since joining is news about a new Jim O'Rourke album. I'd also read somewhere that he quit music to concentrate on film so this really excites me. Eureka is one of my favorite albums.

A disco ball melting into a kitchen chair seems appropriate enough cover art for the eclectic Jim O’Rourke’s new album, set to release on August 31. He is also a guitarist, mixer, experimentalist and producer, but this Drag City release will spotlight his songwriting. It is his first release on the label since 2001, when he released I’m Happy, And I’m Singing, And a 1,2,3,4. The new album is entitled Visitor, and is more of the instrumental vein according to the label. It consists of a single track.


O’Rourke was a bassist and guitarist for Sonic Youth, and he also helped with Wilco’s legendary Yankee Foxtrot Hotel. He has worked with Thurston Moore, Joanna Newsom, Smog, Beth Orton, Merzbow and Fennesz. He recorded Visitor from Tokyo, where he lives.

Isnt it like a 38 min. single track? Its a long time since i`ve looked this much forward to an album.

so is the claim via his label in the initial post that it's more 'song-oriented' somewhat undermined by the comment that it's a single instrumental track?

maybe they mean more organic insrtuments (not that laptop's and programmers aren't valid organic istruments, but some people still define things like that...?)

Glad he's back but I find the "Photo by Kahimi Karie" part weird. Is this the avant j-pop Kahimi Karie who hung out and recorded with Momus in the late 1990s/eary 2000s?
