I just got fired.
I guess my girlfriend and I can say goodbye to our apartment. :(
|
Damn, this sucks
I feel sorry for you man :( |
Worst case scenario: I have to move back in with my 'rents.
I rushed into shit too early. I got my first full-time job, got my first paycheck, got my own place immediately after. How naive. At least I still get to go to film school... *sigh* This whole directing dream better work out, at least half-decently. I'd hate to peak out as a high school dropout with nothing more than a G.E.D., and a film school certificate. [/depressed rant] |
I was laid off in mid June and haven't been able to land another job. I have August's rent, but after that, who knows ?
I wanna take the remaining money I have and go beach bum in Hawaii. I'd rather live in a tent in the woods to EVER live in an apartment. Feel lucky to escape common walls. At a time like this you ought to do something of your dreams....move on somewhere else, a change of scenery can be very invigorating and inspiring. Hopefully your girlfriend will want the adventure too. *edit* I just read your last post, my idea is way off, like by 180 degrees. Oh well. |

Fuck! I'm sorry to hear that! I'm also contemplating how in the hell I can scrape another month's rent, while I hunt endlessly for a new job...or if it's even worth it. I AM only 18 after all. Quote:
That sounds like a wonderful plan. If only it didn't seem so out of reach. I'm signing off for now. It's time to channel all of my emotions, and 'what-have-you's into some form of a script. |
fucking sucks man. Best of luck.

I've lived paycheck to paycheck for the last year or so and it sucks. I fantasize about my idea all the time. It IS seemingly out of reach, in the long run anyway, but still. You sound a bit more responsible than me though, so since you have that discipline, maybe you should stick around and go to school or find a better job for you and your girlfriend. Good luck to you and thanks for your empathy. |
my car wouldn't start this morning and I'm watching get towed. truth be told, I was feeling sorry for myself. not anymore.
jesus, doc. |
That sucks, dude.
Hm.. I'll probably be fired soon, too, for my "attitude". |
So here's the deal:
I've already paid my half of this month's rent, and my girlfriend is paying her half today (meaning the apartment is our's until August 25th). What do I do now that I don't have a $7.50ph job to attend to everyday? Well, there are many things...but only two that I can think of are actually productive. a) Shoot my fucking short film already. I already have music from high quality, notorious bands such as Dead Air Fresheners, and Scissor Shock; a "new" camera; as well as 95% of my SFX gear and lighting. I even met a cake decorator/graphic designer at work, who was more than glad to make my production company logo for his portfolio! Although I haven't secured legal rights on the name yet (I was planning on it with my next paycheck). b) Look for a new job...wherever I can find it. I only had this job for little over 2 months...and I was fired. Should I avoid putting it on a resume? Although fired (bitchy afternoon shift manager...who had no clue whatsoever as to what personal space was; although that's a different story), I still left on good terms; I was just not enthused enough about baked goods, and supposedly "looked forward to my breaks too much". But I've gotten over the initial shock already. The worst that could come out of this is that I'm an 18 yr old film geek that lives with his parents, has a hot girlfriend, and attends film school. Sounds like a decent life to me - it just sucks that I have no idea what to do after that now, and was finally starting to truly feel as if I had everything figured out. |
I probably wouldn't put it on an application. This is terrible advice, maybe, but it's true: Um. Can anyone in your family lie for you? That's what I did. Before I worked at where I work at now, I worked at Toyota and uhm... yeah, some shit happened... and I wasn't there very long. Needless to say, I didn't put it on an app.
However, my grandpa made a business up and even had business cards printed. It wasn't really a business, as it was just him willing to do welding for people. Still, I asked him if I could put down as a reference and I wrote on my next app that I was "employed" by him for 6 months and they called him and asked him and I got the job, easily. |
Either way, the film is nearly completely funded (or so it seems), and my schooling is being paid for by some dead great uncle. Gas, weed, cigarettes, and school projects aside... I don't really have much to pay for.
Thanks for all the support guys. It's actually kinda heartwarming. :o |
I don't know which is worse, being fired or having so much senority and clout at a job you hate that you'd have to do something REALLY bad to get fired...
Of course, being fired from a job you like is heartbreaking, whereas being fired from a job you hate is an insult. |

Don't you love union jobs? |
Oh no, my job isn't union. In fact, they just made us watch an online video with a bunch of (bad) actors posing as employees of the company gushed about how great it was to work there and how having a union would fuck everything up.
I just do such good (not great) work and I get along so well with (most of) the people working there, plus I've been there six and a half years now, so any time I do something wrong it's like, "Well just try to be more careful in the future". |
True they tell me that line all the time. My job is union, which has it's benefits and it's downside. Some people don't deserve to work there.

Well, I see you're in Michigan. I am too, so I can truly relate. At various jobs I've been laid off, let go, downsized, shit-canned, and bumped till my ass was red.
Sooo....if you're ok in the apt. till August, you still have time to put together Plan B. A place to live, then a job. I know it blows to live with the folks but you may have to suck up till you find a job. I would take just about any job....it's Michigan. Would you be able to save any $$ if you were at your mom and dad's? Above all, do NOT lose your dream to direct! That's most important. ...I really, really wish you well. |
Aw man, that's awful... I wish you the best of luck.
|
good luck! i hope things work out eventually.

This isn't terrible advice at all. I was sacked from a job I did for two years due to 'gross misconduct' and have never put it on a single application. I just put down 'travelling' to cover that period. It has put me in a couple of situations where I've had to talk about my time spent in India (a place I've never actually set foot in) during interviews but 'travelling' is a great way of covering up for any sins of the past - plus it makes you seem a lot more adventurous and pro-active to potential employers. |
sucks. I haven't worked full time since november. Hoping to land a new job in the next couple of weeks though.
I'm sure things will work out, but it does suck that you wont get to keep yr apartment. Is yr rent higher than just her wage or? |
Well even if she could pay rent by herself, we'd hardly have money for food - let alone gas, or smokes (both cigarettes and weed are considered necessities in this home).
If necessary, I'm sure we might be able to pull it off...but I'd feel extremely guilty. But that guilt would sure as hell beat the embarrassment, and agony of having to move back into such tense households again. |
...what are your gf's thoughts about all this?
BTW, I publicly apologize for telling you to fuck off that one time. It was my meds. |
She agrees that I should work as hard as I can on shooting my short film, as well as finding a job this month. Neither of us are necessarily getting our hopes up.
My best friend (his mom is our landlord) is so ecstatic about us living in his basement apartment that he has been most supportive of all. He keeps reminding me that if I assume that I won't find a job (after all, it is Michigan)...I won't go into the hunt with the right mentality or energy. This apartment is the perfect location for my short. I don't want to waste all my time looking for a job, not find one, then lose both my home and shooting location before the film is finished. But then again, if I don't look hard enough...I might not find a job. |
fuck man. flux is where shit HAPPENS though. make the best of it.
|
I'm sorry that you lost your job. :( I hope you can get a new one soon.
|
Never ever admit to being fired or terminated unless laid off. You "separated due to management differences" or "personality conflicts" but you have to have a good conflict, like you were get irritated because some of your coworkers weren't cleaning up like they should, or something that makes you look diligent. If yr in MICH you get unemployment right? And sign up for foodstamps right away. Back in the 90's when I got canned the month between work and foodstamps was viewed as zero income so I got a bunch of foodstamps. I felt no guilt, I have been paying into that system since I was 12.

I have an interview at Cheeburger Cheeburger tomorrow at 3pm.
![]() I'm stoked. |
...give em hell, Doc!
|
Well Dr. Eugene, I'm gonna take the advice I gave you earlier in the thread and am heading off for HAWAII !!!
I leave the 18th of this month. I'll post pictures sometime after I get there. I'll be ontop of a mountain an old Hawaiian family has in trust MILES from the bustling civilization of the lower elevations. Good luck with your film projects, girlfriend and place to stay ! Book 'em Danno !!! |

That sounds quite exhilarating. I wish you the best of luck, as well! :) |
Sucks that you are in michigan.
|
Cheeburger Cheeburger called me back for an orientation tomorrow at 2:30. They told me to bring a copy of my driver's license, and my soc security card - they want me to be a busser.
I couldn't be happier! :) Now, I only hope that I'll get enough hours to be able to pay rent/support myself. |
Wow. It's 2:45 here in Michigan. Got my fingers crossed for ya!!
|
good luck!

Easily 10 degrees cooler than down below at any given time..like mid 70s during the day (85 at sealevel) and near 60 at night !! Woohooo !!! I'll post some pics as promised sometime soon ! :D |
Yeah, where you at Dr. Eugene?
|
Hey man -
If you seriously don't want to move out of yr apt, you can try searching for odd jobs on craigslist. Things will be tight but if you respond to enough you probably will be able to stay (that is, if yr rent is affordable enough) |
All times are GMT -5. The time now is 11:00 AM. |
