all songs with a stop in...
the longest I've heard is: indochine - "le message" ( about 20 secondes )
I often like songs that I have a break in, it's often a moment of emotion. There's a few others i'm sure so I'm asking you if you know other songs like this. Give songs that you like only, not trying to be exhaustive here asking this to france's national music forum too we'll see. Thank you |
crass-theyve got a bomb
it has a pretty break to give the audience time to reflect the horrors of nuclear war |
Seele Brennt by Einsturzende Neubauten has some pretty long pauses.
|
radiohead- motion picture soundtrack
|
can't think straight, but:
Ulan Bator - llumiere blanche (not exactly "silence" but there's the amazing gap between 3:40 and 4:50, greatest "reprise" evah) they're french too he he |

Surprised Fugazifan didn't think of that five second or so pause in "Waiting Room," unless he doesn't like it. Not super long, but I heard a live version where they stretch that pause pretty far.
|
There's a Scissor Shock song where there's about a minute of complete silence in the middle of a track (it's a 13 minute song) and then it goes into the noisiest, craziest thing ever.

now as a listener, that would piss me right off. |
haha.
it's the first song on the album too. |
BBC version of Mogwai's Like Herod

Almost all Gastr Del Sol songs have long "stops" in them. That's part of what makes their sound awesome.
Also, Taku Sugimoto's entire career is built around stopping. |

i just hope you sell that album cheaper than the rest to acknowledge the fact that people are effectively getting a minute's less sound than they'd be expecting. A massive warning sticker too. |
Hahaha. It's an hour long album! And it cost like $4.
|
Make it $3.80. Cover yourself.

eric's trip - my room

Yeah, now that I'm thinking about it, "silent parts" in songs are often the most memorable. There needs to be more bands who use silence as part of their music.
|
Isn't the end of Motion Picture Soundtrack just a hidden track?
|
yeah, it's called genchildren or something.

"Tattoo" by Venetian Snares
|
stop in the name of love

Pantera's "Suicide Note Pt. II" has a pause where you think the song's over, then Dime does one of those harmonic squeals and it comes back. Also, the last song on that album, Sandblasted Skin (Reprise), fades out and comes back slightly louder about 2 or 3 minutes later. Although that might be a better example of giving into the "hidden track" fad of the 90s...
I prefer moments were all the instruments except for one drop out, but it's not really a "solo" (I can't think of any examples right now). Outright pauses in songs kinda kill the momentum if you ask me. |
Shady Lane - Pavement

There's really great moments of silence in Refused's Tannhauser/Derive track off "Shape of Punk to Come"

|
Slint - Rhoda
|
Metallica - Damage, Inc (intro)
|
There are some Godspeed You Black Emperor tracks that have some stops in them. Providence is the one that comes to mind.
