The Glitch Hop thread

Here is a thread for Glitch Hop and all related, just as pointless styles: glitch hop, wonky, dubstep, skweee, aquacrunk and so on and so on. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on the subject - except the dubstep thread by ZEROpumpkins.
Anyone else into this sound? I've been really getting into it lately. There are so many great things getting released...

Share your favorites, latest discoveries, etc.

My personal favorites (no order):

Flying Lotus (of course...)
Nosaj Thing (Drift has got to be one of my favorite albums of 2009)
Prefuse 73
J Dilla (he's not really glitch hop, but he's had such a massive influence on it that I find it appropriate)
Lukid (Foma is really really good)
Harmonic 313
Dabrye
Dial81
Dorian Concept (he's got this fantastic song, Color Sexist. The rest is good as well)
Hudson Mohawke
Mesak

I've just discovered Mount Kimbie, and they've got this amazing track "Taps". You should check it out.

TheFoxBen 08.11.2009 03:13 PM

"Drift" by Nosaj Thing really is one of the highlights of the year !

SYRFox 08.11.2009 03:17 PM

Yes! It's so good - and addictive. And a real grower. At first I didn't like it that much but I've quickly grown addicted. IOIO and Light #2 are great. So are all the other tracks of the album.

SYRFox 08.11.2009 03:19 PM

FoxBen, you should check out Dorian Concept. As you like Nosaj Thing I think you would love it. It's kinda in the same vibe.

TheFoxBen 08.11.2009 03:27 PM

k, I'm getting it right now.

C-c-c-c-c-c--ccc-----ooo-oo--oo-l.

SYRFox 08.11.2009 04:33 PM

hahaha
unfortunately most things labeled "glitch hop" have close to nothing to do with glitch - which makes this label even more pointless. Yet it's the most accurate for this sound, I guess... Which is why I used it

Derek 08.11.2009 04:40 PM

Ah, I've heard Flying Lotus, J Dilla and Prefuse 73.

I thought it'd be glitch music with weird beats or something hahaha.

SYRFox 08.11.2009 04:45 PM

ahah yeah, that's quite what i was looking for when i first heard about glitch hop as well. it turned out it's quite a different thing, yet super interesting... Though the amount of names describing it is ridiculous.

infinitemusic 08.11.2009 06:13 PM

So it's just dubstep with a different name?

floatingslowly 08.11.2009 06:17 PM

you do know that wonky is an even less credible musical form than either skweee or aquacrunk, don't you?

it's mostly because skweee is the sound that squirrels make when you step on them and aquacrunk uses clever naming-techniques to hide the fact that there's white boys making it.

wonky on the other hand, was nothing but unfashionable from the moment diamonds touched the vinyl it was pressed into. it's shit made by shit people with shit parents.

I say this not because I care, but because glice has you on ignore and he would want it this way.

Not really. I don't like the Dubstep tunes I've heard. But it's close to dubstep, yes.

Ahah yeah. I quoted skwee and aquacrunk for comedic purposes, actually. Those names make me laugh. Though skweee has actually really a specific sound.

no, it's not much like dubstep at all other than being electronic and not aimed specificly at the dance floor

infinitemusic 08.11.2009 08:10 PM

Well that was the impression I got from the post... so what is it then?

kierkegaarden 08.11.2009 08:19 PM

Satanicpornocultshop may be of interest to anyone into 'glitch'.

narlus 08.11.2009 09:36 PM

check out latter-era Hood, and Remote Viewer.

I gotta admit, I didn't really "get" Prefuse 73's new one. I liked some of his stuff but the new one just sounded like random sounds fucked with in Fruity Loops or something. I am guessing that's not how he did it but it just sounded a bit... like... nothing. Floating in the ether.

atsonicpark 08.12.2009 03:56 PM

I wanna hear some super glitch-hop. Like, stuttering vocals, cd-skipping beats, etc. Basically the things that come into your head when you hear glitch-hot. I heard a Kid606 (who I don't like)/Mike Patton (who I don't like) collaborative song one time that kinda had this sound and it was surprisingly cool. But still.

Sounds like Autechre with some rapping over it. And it would be really really cool indeed.

About the new Prefuse ... I don't know, I really like it. It's kinda different from his previous albums, I think, but I'm really into it. Like, you never know what's going on next, you can never expect what's to come, and it's full of briliant ideas everywhere. Parachute Panador, Nature's Uplifting Revenge, Oh Is It, etc etc etc ... so great. I don't know. I think it might be a bit difficult to get into it because there are just so many things going on. I've read an interview of him where he said the album was meant to be just one track, but the label insisted on splitting it on many different parts, which makes sense.

This said, I think Nosaj Thing's album is better. And I'm quickly growing to be in love with Dorian Concept's one.

atsonicpark 08.12.2009 04:15 PM

Yeah, there are lots of elements at work and some interesting things going on but it just hasn't (pardon the pun) really "clicked" with me.

narlus 08.12.2009 04:20 PM

i saw prefuse 73 last friday...here are some pics:
http://www.prefixmag.com/photos/wave...point-never-b/

the newer stuff was definitely more confounding to the general audience than the older material.

SYRFox 08.12.2009 04:26 PM

Another neat tune: Mount Kimbie - Taps
My latest crush :D

Man Prefuse 73 + Oneohtrix Point Never sounds like the best show ever. I love OPN.
Did you take the pics? They're really cool

Is that Dimlite with Prefuse?

NWRA 08.13.2009 04:37 AM

I think Zomby's first EP would count as this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSHHzgFobU8). Shame his album, while good, was more jungle/rave.

J. Dilla's new album, Jay Stay Paid, sounds like it to me, as it's mainly fragments of his more electo-style beats.

SYRFox 08.13.2009 04:55 AM

Haven't checked Jay Stay Paid yet. Also, I'm gonna check Zomby first EP. I've only heard some tunes from his album (Where Were U In 92) and couldn't get what the fuss was about.

yeah, i did take the shots, thanks! not sure who else was w/ herren that night.

SYRFox 08.13.2009 06:50 PM

Just discovered 1000 Names, they're from Bulgaria. They rule! Their album Toys Room Combat has no less than 25 tunes on it and a good number is great. Some neat abstract hip hop tracks, as well as some super glitchy ones. Really interesting.

I swear I heard a bit of "Starpower" around the end...

SYRFox 09.30.2009 03:34 PM

Bumping this thread cause Mary Anne Hobbs has released a comp entitled "Wild Angels" which includes many great glitch hop tracks
and especially this one: Floating Points - Esthian III which is simply mindblowing.
That Mono/Poly track that's on there is awesome too. And well, most of the tracks actually.
Only lacks some Dorian Concept (I've been really obsessed with Dorian Concept for the last month or so)

SYRFox 09.30.2009 03:46 PM

One another Dorian Concept video (seriously. This guy is incredible)
