Pitchfork: The top 500 tracks of the decade
http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-...2000s-500-201/
I don't know if you people like Pitchfork, I personally hate this website (the ratings are completely random, based on only one member of the staff, their reviews are pretentious, 0.0 for NYC Ghosts & Flowers, and more reasons to hate them...) and I only go there for the news but I always thought their lists were kinda interesting, except this one: The top 500 tracks of the decade, I was like "wtf?" at many times. 48. Panda Bear "Bro's" 25. Rihanna [ft. Jay-Z] "Umbrella" I mean, come on ! This can't be serious. So, let's discuss about it. |
who would ever take pitchfork seriously?
500. The Big Pink "Velvet" [4AD; 2009] case in point. this song should be a million times higher on the list. |
I don't even have to look at it to know that it's lame.
|
Say what you will, but "Umbrella" is a pretty amazing pop song.
|
FoxBen, I don't mean this as an insult, but I'm guessing yr still kind of young. Ammiright?
|
Yes, I'm 16 but I don't see what's the point of asking that...
Still, "Umbrella" might not be that bad, but I wouldn't put it over any Panda Bear song and I don't think it's one of the best songs of the decade. One of the most popular ok, but not one of the best, and it's clearly a top here. But I just took this song as an example, there are certainly worse songs on the list, eh. |
The age thing was just a hunch.
At any rate, they're picking 500 tracks (mainly singles) from a 10 year span. What are they basing them on? In another 10 years, some of us (you, me, etc) will remember "Bros." certainly. But a lot of other people (you, me, etc etc etc!) will remember "Umbrella." Ranking them one over the other is pointless really. Is "Umbrella" better than "Bros"? Really it doesn't matter. I think they're both excellent songs. |
Fuck yeah OutKast.
Miles ahead of any other artist in the mainstream. |
Outkast are great. But that might be going overboard.
|
Personally, my pick for #1 would have been "Good Girl/Carrots" by Panda Bear, it's just my favorite song of the decade, so great.
|
i don't understand why people who supposedly hate pitchfork still read it, & it seems everyone who reads it claims to hate it

co-sign. I read it everyday. I have for like 8 years or something. Whatever. I don't agree with everything they say. But I've certainly disovered some good stuff thru either a good OR BAD review and their news section is usually very ahead of others. So whatever. |

I didnt read the list. I doubt I will even bother. But let's see. "Miss Jackson"? Is that on there? That's a great song from the last decade. "Hey Ya"? I mean overplayed, but certainly a hell of a song. And of course I think they're forward thinkers. |
Pitchfork does indeed suck.
491. Viktor Vaughn "Saliva" [HipHopSite.com; 2003] That song does not! |
"Mr. Clean" or "Raedawn" is probably my favorite track on VAUDEVILLE. But that's an incredible album.
|
love any/everything doom touches
Holy fuck! 487. Jaylib "The Red" [Stones Throw; 2003] Great track. Wouldn't expect that one. Always happy to see Dilla's greatness recognized |

so does NR. Yr in good company. |
pitchfork has not-so-gradually descended into a gofddamn fucking folk pussy fuck singer songwriter asssucking weepy bulshit acoustic loving baby soft WUSS rock a la taylor and John Denver and all that same goddamn horrible lukewarm cringe inducing shithead 70's rehash nonsense. FUCK ALL THAT SHIT.
FUCK I HATE IT SO FUCKING BAD. such pussy pampered fucks strumming their goddamn folkie good for nothing garbage. burn them all to the ground goddamnit! |
Quote:
Was there any Quasimoto? I couldn't be fucked thumbing through the whole thing. |
Me neither. I love Madlib (and love love love YNQ) but Quas never did much for me.
|
Bombs Over Baghdad is better than Hey ya
|
Agreed. But it was also pre-2000.
|
true
forget it then! |

I think the beats are good. But the persona is a bit too silly for me. The instrumental version of UNSEEN was way better than the LP. But like I said, YNQ is by far my favorite Lib output. |
"crazy" by gnarls barkley is the ELEVENTH BEST SONG OF THE DECADE.
FUCK |
^that's just bad.
|
missy elliot, daft punk, and beyonce all in the top 10 SONGS OF THE DECADE
|
Quote:
Alright yeah maybe not 11th best song I guess... but srsly this is pitchfork |
i have nothing against gnarls barkley.
that song has jsut pissed me off so much for the past 5 years or so. |

Nothing. But I wouldn't include that song if I made a list of 500 songs from the decade. And I would include "Umbrella." haha. |
i would include the LCD soundsystem songs though.
just definetly not that high. |
again, I find the ranking arbitrary. So whatever. But yeah LCD's "Losing My Edge" was a brilliant single. That's for sure.
|
definetly is arbitrary.
i always think to myself "WHO THE HELL KNOWS THE BEST SONG?" a. it' an opinion b. there are so many millions of songs that those who ranked those songs didn' hear. so who the hell knows what kind of intersting sounds there are out there? |
top songs of the decade for me:
1 : hips don't lie : shakira 2 : roc : nadiya 3 : despre tine : o-zone 4 : new hampshire : sonic youth 5 : piece of me : britney spears 6 : les voisines - renan luce 7 : take me to the clouds above : LMC vs U2 |
"Hips Don't Lie" was good. Truth.
