Soft ballad metal is where it's at. Tawny Kitaen inspired Whitesnake.

Dead-Air 09.02.2009 10:58 PM

No idea if I participated before, but...

1) Sabbath through Vol. IV (Master of Reality is my fave though)
2) Most Motorhead up to Orgasmatron, but of course first and foremost Ace of Fucking Spades!
3) Priest up to and massively culminating in Unleashed in the East
4) Maiden's first two
5) Metallica through Garage Days Re-revisited
6) All Melvins that crosses the line, and tons of shit does, but you figure it out!
7) Roots by Sepultura
8) Dictators - Go Girl Crazy (yeah I know it's also proto-pop punk, but it's fucking metal up your ass too, better than Manowar ever was)
9) UFO - Flying (like Hawkwind with less brain cells, if that's possible!)
10) Air Supply's Greatest Hits

I'm sure something has happened in the last 25 years, but honestly, I can't really tell Slipknot from Gorgoroth when push comes to shove...

That's very poetic. Whitesnake really is like shitting from a dick.

You. Me. Poetry book. What do you say? I think it'll sell in the German market.

Is that a German farmers' market?

GeneticKiss 09.02.2009 11:15 PM

Mastodon are the greatest metal band of today.

Isis rock too, but calling them "metal" doesn't quite feel right.

Pantera are the standard by which I measure all metal. If Dimebag hadn't been killed, Damageplan might replace Mastodon in the first sentence of this post.

el duderino 09.03.2009 12:17 AM

Neurosis & Electric Wizard & Morbid Angel

youthoftomorrow 09.03.2009 02:39 AM

Isis is easily the best band making music today. Wavering Radiant is an amazing album.

Mastodon is certainly interesting (and Blood Mountain was epic), but Crack the Skye was a little weak.

does Lightning Bolt qualify as metal?

no.

Death & the Maiden 09.03.2009 04:02 AM

Most of what I listen to now is metal. I'm a black metaller, I've dabbled in other metal subgenres - thrash, doom, death - but black metal is what I'm most interested in.
Black metal bands:
Ved Buens Ende
Mayhem
Burzum
Sigh
Fimbulwinter
Darkthrone
Gehenna
Windir
Striborg
Borknagar
Immortal
In the Woods...

Other metal bands:
Iron Maiden
Megadeth
Candlemass
Metallica
Cathedral
Death

Favourite albums:
1. Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape / Hangman's Hymn
2. Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
3. Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
4. Mayhem - Live in Leipzig
5. Burzum - Hvis Lysett Tar Oss
6. Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
7. Megadeth - Killing is my Business... And Business is Good! / Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
8. Gehenna - Seen Through the Veils of Darkness
9. Candlemass - Nightfall
10. Fimbulwinter - Servants of Sorcery

Mastodon is the only thing I have heard in a while that is decent metal.

Is this answer pedictable? " I like Metallica." seriously I do....I even did my 8th grade project on them.

floatingslowly 09.03.2009 09:04 AM

I love metal!

favorite metal bands:

NOFX
Whitesnake
Candlebox
The Jesus & Mary Chain

SuperCreep 09.03.2009 09:44 AM

Mainly into (some of the usual) black metal stuff like Burzum, Darkthrone, Bathory, Drudkh, Windir, (early) Ulver, Wolves in the Throne Room, Empyrium, Alcest, Blut Aus Nord, Darkspace, Paysage d'Hiver, etc.

I also loves me some other stuff like Godflesh, Neurosis, Melvins, Boris, Sleep, Nadja, Pig Destroyer, Motörhead, blahblah.

Rob Instigator 09.03.2009 09:55 AM

I am an old reformed metalhead.

I still dig it, but these are my fave fave

Metallica - Ride the Lightning (fight fire with fire is a fabulous opener)
Megadeth - Peace Sells, and Rust In Peace. Rust In Peace has some wicked wicked riffs. Holy Wars is fucking awesome.
I love all OZZY era Black Sabbath. children of the Grave at 2:23, so heavy, so heavy.
anyone else love Terrorizer? so fast! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2KgenV8drw

Metal is sometimes great and is sometimes shit, I hate most of the death metal, but I hate black metal more, one of the worst genres ever IMO. My favorite metal albums are:

All the 80's albums by Metallica (especially Ride the Lightning)

Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (well I don't know if I can say metal but it sure is fucking loud and awesome)

Boris - Feedbacker and Amplifier Worship

Tool - Aenima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days (let the hate begin)

Faith No More - Angel Dust

Any recommendations ?

Feedbacker isn't quite metal. Nothing Boris does is quite one thing.

Gorguts is where it's at.

Glice 09.03.2009 03:15 PM

Metal always seems like one of those genres that, no matter how many records I own, I'll always feel like a fraud. Much like hardcore (punk, not happy). I don't think an appreciation of hardcore means anything unless you're down the front getting yourself hurt for a band that no-one will ever write about. Similarly, metal's all about the culture that surrounds it. No matter how much I love Maiden (or whatever), I'll always feel like I'm just a voyeur on metal culture, because ultimately I think long goatees are shit, hoodies look terrible and nice haircuts and shirts are a good idea. Also, while being able to play the guitar well is impressive, it really doesn't make anyone a decent human being.

batreleaser 09.03.2009 03:25 PM

i really dont feel like listing every obscure black metal band i dig, so yeah, iron maiden rules.

jerf 09.03.2009 04:07 PM

Between the Buried and Me. Great band.

I lived and died for Metal back when I was 8-16, the I found Sonic Youth and jane's Addiction.

Glice 09.03.2009 04:33 PM

Yeah, you're definitely a convincing metaller. In fact, I'd say you're so convincing that you're unconvincing in pretty much everything else. I have a friend like you, and no matter what he says, I still know he'd rather be getting pummeled at Down than faffing about with some string quartet on a Tuesday night.

Rob Instigator 09.03.2009 04:37 PM

is today opposite day and no one told me?

Rob Instigator 09.03.2009 04:49 PM

the melvins did indeed pummel my brain so deliciously.

but I am equal parts classical music fuddy duddy, having played the cello for 8 years and being deeply in love with orchestras. especially the ones with big butts

the first down record was great. "stone the crow" was southern rock at its best, and phil anselmo is waaaaay underrated when it comes to his actual vocal talent, his range is rather impressive. and he throws a stiff fucking right hook.

batreleaser 09.03.2009 10:17 PM

King Diamond!

Actually, I can't take them seriously when he sings about his grandma.
