rock n roll hall of fame nominations announced. will swa(y) love or hate?

from the fork that pitches
Can you believe ABBA isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet? How about the Stooges? Genesis? Kiss?
All of those artists-- and eight more-- will have the chance to join the institution's ranks in 2010. The Rock Hall's official site has announced next year's nominees. And they are...

ABBA
The Chantels
Jimmy Cliff
Genesis
The Hollies
KISS
LL Cool J
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Stooges
Donna Summer

Some sort of KISS/LL Cool J/Stooges mashup is messing with my brain right now.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is usually good for some drunken speeches, hilarious all-star jams, and watching estranged band members stand next to each other while gritting their teeth. Next year's 25th annual shindig goes down on March 15, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
To be considered for the hall, artists must have released their first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Red Hot Chili Peppers are old.

the chili peppers ARE old.\

this makes me think that it will not be long before they come a knocking on SONIC YOUTH's door ,man

Satan 09.24.2009 01:01 PM

this is a good list.

but i hate that place.

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 01:16 PM

the hall of fame museum is like 1/10th great memorabilia and stuff, and 9/10ths pandering to fucking pop fans who accompanied their rocking hubby/wife/boyfriend/son/girlfriend etc

so MUCH BULLSHIT.

their ramones exhibit weas great though, as was the old blues guitars exhibit. muddy waters first pickup!

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 01:17 PM

i will go on record as stating that Jimmy Cliff's voice sucks the fucking high pitched anal leakage from phil collins ass. I cannot stand that soft singing fuck.

radarmaker 09.24.2009 01:19 PM

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers? Jesus cunting fuck.

notyourfiend 09.24.2009 01:49 PM

i much enjoyed patti smith's performance of rock and roll nigger when she was inducted.

it was hilarious how much of that song they had to bleep out.

GeneticKiss 09.24.2009 01:51 PM

ABBA
No

The Chantels
Haven't heard, so cannot judge

Jimmy Cliff
Don't know this guy

Genesis
Maybe

The Hollies
All I've heard is Bus Stop, which I guess is an alright song

KISS
Maybe, but I think these guys are overrated in a lot of ways

LL Cool J
Sure, why not?

Darlene Love
Haven't heard of her

Laura Nyro
I know the name but not any of her music

Red Hot Chili Peppers
In their prime, these guys were pretty good, so I'll say yes

The Stooges
A must...I expect it will happen as a pity move for Ron Asheton's friends/family

Donna Summer
Why is disco being represented in a monument to a style of music it was in direct opposition to?

Satan 09.24.2009 01:58 PM

you're saying "why not" to ll cool j, but WTF to donna summer?

wat.

FUCKING SHAME ON YOU for not knowing who jimmy cliff is

GeneticKiss 09.24.2009 02:07 PM

I can tolerate LL Cool J but not Donna Summer. I mean, "Mama Said Knock You Out"? How can you not love that?

And no, I've never heard of Jimmy Cliff. I guess I'm just not as cool as the rest you.

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 02:12 PM

he made a good movie.

Satan 09.24.2009 02:18 PM

he also made a lot of good music.

neither cool j nor donna summer (who made some brilliant disco records) are rock and roll, WHY THE FUCK are they going in the rock n roll hall of fame (maybe) then?!?!

abba are more rocknroll than they are.

abba are just brilliant.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 09.24.2009 02:18 PM

the harder they come, the harder they fall, one in all

Stooges better fucking make it in.

Fuck RHCP. I'd like to have Anthony Kedis's head on a stick.

Satan 09.24.2009 02:27 PM

i like kiss. they're just a rock and roll band. people expect too much from musicians.

automatic bzooty 09.24.2009 02:32 PM

GO STOOGES. not that it means much if they get in, but still! gotta root for those motherfuckers.

i heard this same thing from some really grumpy dudes when i went there. except replace disco with rap. my eyes rolled. none of those genres are REALLY opposed to each other; they definitely interlock and mesh.

also: "i feel love"? how can you not love that?

(err... what, exactly, did darlene love do outside the crystals now...?)

loubarret 09.24.2009 02:33 PM

Some Spector produced singles which are epic, but after that no freaking clue

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 02:41 PM

they had to let in hip hop since it keeps the Hall relevant to the "kids" and since they knew that a HIP HOP HALL OF FAME wouled steal the thunder from their proceedings.
trhey got Run DMC, the furious Five and grandmaster flash in there. Public Enemy in 2 years!!! come on!

Kiss deserves it. they have rocked for the longest.
is ACDC up in that mofucker?

fuck genesis

Jesus cunting fuck.

jerf 09.24.2009 03:05 PM

Donna Summers? But still no Sonic Youth? What the shit...

chicka 09.24.2009 03:23 PM

She's older than SY.. they'll catch up to SY in the next 5 years I'd guess.

Yes Rob ACDC is in the hall

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 03:53 PM

it would be AWESOME to see the crowd at that event have to sit through Burning Spear or Inhuman.

when metallica did their thang, the shit was loud!

GeneticKiss 09.24.2009 04:07 PM

I dunno, I think if SY got into the Hall of Fame, they'd probably play Teenage Riot and Kool Thing and leave it at that...

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 04:16 PM

metallica played master of puppets, the they did enter sandman and it suckeddddd

SuperCreep 09.24.2009 04:20 PM

-Stooges definitely deserve it the most out of that list, no question.
-Genesis have some redeemable qualities, at least for the Gabriel-era stuff. Deserving, I guess.
-I hate ABBA and KISS, but I guess they were expected.
-Ditto with RHCP, Donna Summer, and Jimmy Cliff, though I hate them less.
-LL Cool J? For what?
-The Hollies have some good stuff, but not really "hall of fame" material in my books.
-Haven't heard enough to comment on the rest.

All in all, fuck the RnR Hall of Fame.

psychtrailmix 09.24.2009 04:25 PM

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame seems like a big fucking joke! What's next, are they going to induct Beyonce and Britney Spears?? Give me a fucking break!

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 04:32 PM

if you go to the museum itself, there are exhibits of "rock stage fashions" and they ahve NSync costumes,a nd christina aguilera costumes, and cher costumes. NOT rock N Roll.

maybe it is because the Hard Rock cafe already took all the good memorabilia?

Glice 09.24.2009 05:48 PM

Madonna has done more with her recent gypsy activity than any political band has done in 30 years, with the possible (execrable) exception of the live AIDS musicians.

Politics isn't rock n' roll, but I think people have a habit of missing that, contentious bitch though she may appear, Madonna's very good at getting people's heckles up. Meanwhile, Iggy Pop has been advertising insurance.

Glice 09.24.2009 05:49 PM

Ok, that's slightly hyperbolic, but my point is that the SYG indie cabal do really need some sense of perspective from time to time. Get Abba in there, then we'll think about the Stooges, eh?

Keeping It Simple 09.24.2009 05:57 PM

Some of the artists on that list aren't associated with rock and roll. Since when was Reggae, Hip Hop and Europop Rock and Roll? Did I miss something?

Toilet & Bowels 09.24.2009 05:59 PM

abba aren't a rock n roll band though

edit. just saw the list, almost none of it is rock n roll

demonrail666 09.24.2009 06:28 PM

The Stooges are like the new Black Sabbath. Everyone in the industry suddenly seems to be falling over themselves to show their love. It should go to Abba but it'll go to the stooges, i'm sure.

Toilet & Bowels 09.24.2009 06:49 PM

the stooges deserve it as much as anyone

Toilet & Bowels 09.24.2009 07:14 PM

the whole thing is ridiculous anyway.

Rob Instigator 09.24.2009 07:17 PM

so is rock n roll if you think about it

Katy 09.24.2009 08:16 PM

The Stooges have been on the nominations list for the past fuck-knows-how-many-years and have never got in. (When REM (who were inducted the first time they were nominated (ie: the first year they were eligible) and Patti Smith got inducted in 2007 they made a point (protest) by playing "I Wanna Be Your Dog" together at the ceremony..)

Iggy has not been inducted as a solo artist either (compare with Lou Reed who got in twice.. once with the VU, once as a solo artist.)

Whoever it is votes for this shit has no regard or respect for Iggy.

So, as an Iggy fan, I say FUCK the hall of fame. If The Stooges get in this year it will be sad because Ron was the only one who really wanted it. I hope Iggy tells them to fuck off (he won't, but I wish he would.)

Katy 09.24.2009 08:52 PM

I think Iggy's kind of.. become okay with looking back since he approached and hit 60. (He said for ages that he'd retire at 60.. so maybe now he just wants to bask in what he knows is his best work?)

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprized if this thing with James Williamson doesn't work out (or, god forbid, JW pops his clogs before they can do anything much) Iggy doesn't start calling Bowie asking if he maybe wants to do some Berlin retrospective concerts or something. The "Don't Look Back" organizers would lose their shit over that (I wouldn't mind either..)

PS - I think Iggy's done more good work "solo" than Lou Reed has (though they both owe Bowie a fuck load.) And Iggy's a million times better live than LR has ever been. I think in the Iggy v Lou shit/rad records stakes Iggy actually comes out on top. I know (despite all the shit) I'd take three Iggy records (The Idiot/LustForLife/New Values) over any three Lou Reed records. And I'd always chose to go see Iggy if he and Lou were playing London on the same night. I think it's absurd that Lou Reed is in the Rock Hall of Fame twice and Iggy's not in there at all.

loubarret 09.25.2009 12:53 AM

Genesis was a good band wen Peter Gabriel lead them, after that...it's horribele.

pbradley 09.25.2009 01:01 AM

I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, once. It was the most boring and painful museum I've ever been to, but I acted as though I loved it as to not upset my Aunt. Got a t-shirt from it, too.
