I always seem to forget about Unmade Bed, but then when I hear it, I'm always blown away. Next for me would probably be Teen Age Riot. Of course when I first got into Sonic Youth, this track was a standout. I just listened to it the other day for the first time in a while and was really digging it. I still wish the intro was its own track. That could never be overlooked. I'd say number three is Dirty Boots. It's a fantastic track, but I hardly ever play it. Number four could be Tokyo Eye. Man, that song is really rocking in the middle. Finally, I'd say Marilyn Moore (...even had to check how to spell Marilyn). I don't know why I'm always surprised when I hear how good this song is.
So, 1. Unmade Bed 2. Teen Age Riot 3. Dirty Boots 4. Tokyo Eye 5. Marilyn Moore Funny, all Thurston vocals. |
i always thought justice is might is overlooked.

three of these are singles... three of their most popular singles. I can't really agree that they're overlooked. (edit: technically 4 of them were singles if you count the live version of MM released on a 7" :)) |

The question asked: "What are according to you the 5 most overlooked SY songs?" Not according to what gets played on the radio. Maybe most fans pay more attention to the singles. I don't. Edit: As for most of the lists on here, those are tracks I play constantly. The five I listed are awesome, but I tend to forget about them... i.e. "overlooked." That fact that some of them are singles is irrelevant. |

No! Thank you for rescuing me. Now that I know Teen Age Riot, Dirty Boots, and Unmade Bed are three of their most popular singles, I may not overlook them! |
It's hard to calculate a baseline of popularity. Radio is out--I never listen and I don't think they play SY anyway. The only sources of ratings on individual tracks are threads on this board and your own subjective taste, unless I'm missing something. Cool thread.

True. http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=3716 ^ If that little game lasted and more board members contributed, that could have been a pretty accurate analysis of some of the tunes. |

sarcasm detected. Anyway, yr right. Oh and you should replace "Tokyo Eye" with "Kool Thing." Or "Superstar." |

In detail:
-Quest for the Cup (Man, this song has such a weird atmosphere, it really appeals to me though. I love the dissonance in this song too) -Cinderella's Big Score (The break is wonderful. Really pumps me up!) -Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit (I used to have "Dirty" ripped on my Xbox, so I listened to it constantly. This song is one of the few on the album that stuck in my head) -Shaking Hell (Eerie lyrics. I'll shake off your flesh! Fuck!) -Beauty Lies in the Eye (So soothing and energetic at the same time. A true hidden gem on "Sister".) Some songs that just didn't make the list: Dripping Dream, The Burning Spear and Hey Joni. Oh, and Mildred Pierce. Kudos to anyone who mentioned it. |

wow. Really good. Very interesting. Really. |
Um...
1. Swimsuit Issue 2. Bone 3. On The Strip 4. Saucer-Like 5. some track on 1000 Leaves that I forgot about that's really good. Have a hard time remembering that album. |
I'm going to do this for real. Not "5 songs that I love that not everybody does as much" but 5 that I'd bet a lot of people that post here don't even know of. One exception to that off of Bad Moon Rising, but still obscure in the total canon.

I think New Hampshire is one of their "forgotten" gems; The guitar parts are beautiful and the melody is one of Thurston's best (I'd say Hits of Sunshine is in the same boat). Unfortunately (This is something that upsets me about Sonic Youth), a good chunk of their songs are forgotten about by the next record. I mean, Washing Machine for example has had how many songs be played live post the original tour for the album? Wasn't NYC Ghosts and Flowers (The song) voted the best SY song back in the day (Last played live late 2001)? Every record they do have great songs; Most of them though are left behind when it comes time for their next record. I realize this is fairly standard practice, but unfortunately I doubt they are one day going to all of a sudden start throwing more surprises in the sets.
Of course, there are exceptions to that. Songs from DDN, Sister, Evol, etc (Mainly their 80s run and some of their "hits") are consistently in the set lists. ~Jeremy~ |
