How cool do you reckon Sonic Youth are in 2010?
Personally I think of them being as cool as the rolling stones. They should retire.
|
I hope their new album will bring something new to their music. I don't think it will, though. But yeah they're certainly not that cool in 2010. I wouldn't say they should retire though. But I hope they won't do another album of "SY rock".
|
I think they will. Just to finish the trilogy of rock albums, and them they will move on... It's a cicle
|
Certainly cooler than Stones who should have retired 15 years ago....
Atleast with SY the sound stays fresh as they throw change ups and curves here and there. The Stones only got one pitch a fast ball that's lost about 20 miles an hour in velocity...... |
What SYRFox said.
|
Not as cool as me drinking iced coffee, nor as cool as a Snoopy-themed bathroom, but still on par with polar bear balls.
|
well, reading interviews with SY from the 80s or 90s you'd get these journalists kissing their arses & the band generally seemed laid back and irreverent about their own importance, nowadays it seems like all SY want to talk about is their position in the pantheon of both art and music, how established they are, how long the list of their credentials is, how awesome it is having a mansion in the country, 5 zillion records in your collection, a coterie of famous friends, and your own private recording studio.
|
I'm confused by "cool".
I don't think the Youth are anywhere near done. |
All the SY member children need to go to college, y'know... I don't think any of them are rolling around in cash.
|
I think it´s kind of fashion to talk about the bands that are over 10 years, that they´re not cool anymore. I think people are afraid, that somebody say them old fart, if they admit to like some old band. I like both Rolling Stones and Sonic Youth very much. "A bigger bang" wasn´t the best Rolling Stones -record, but it´s good. And "Bridges to Babylon" wasn´t as good as "Beggar´s Banquet" but much much better than the most of the stones album in eighties. In my opinion there are many new bands that could never do as good albums than the stones and sonic youth have done. Of course, if you feel in the deep of your heart, that some band can´t do as good music as they´ve done, it´s ok. I know also many bands, that music doesn´t make me feel anything anymore, for example King Crimson, Yes, Rush. New York Dolls new albums have been ok, but not that ok, that I had to bought them.

They're frozen solid.
|
they're still pretty coo' with me, and in this scenario, that's all i really give a fuck about.
|
They're as cool as this message board is.
... |
the roling stones will always be COOL.
sonic youth will always be cool. keith richards will be COOLER than any of you when he is 90 years old (if he makes it that far) now, as to whether they are "hip" that is another story. MGMT and Animal Collective are HIP, but they will never ever be cool, or anywhere near as cool as sonic youth or the rolling stones on their worst day |

i like the rolling stones 60s/70s output and without them we'd have no -- well, they have so many heirs, good and bad. but cool or not, who cares? juno made sonic youth uncool for kids who were 17 at the time it was released, so here comes the big wave of gratuitous putdowns, i suppose-- one generation kills the previous one etc. me, i have nobody to kill, at my advanced age, except annoying little children, which i roast, carve and devour, provided they are plump and well fed (breast only, no bottles). but anyway, what was this thread about? cool? let me think as cool as coltrane. no, truly, it's the music that matters--- i haven't enjoyed their stuff lately, i think thurston has taken over and he needs to step back & set lee free. and kim sing. and steve should pull a ringo and write yellow submarine. i haven't been to a show in ages but i heard they've been playing DV69 which i've wanted so badly to see live, with the ghost of gloria gaynor, i mean, pardon me, there was noise outside, lydia lunch (those alliterations confuse me, and teh y's), yes, the ghost of lydia lunch summoned onstage for the screams. as for your original question, i have no idea. what is "cool"? ![]() |
being a big nob end does not preclude coolness.

is this because you are a huge MGMT fan, or because you are a huge Animal Collective fan? |

I don't think you can compare Animal Collective with them. I mean, it's fine to not like them (though I'm personally a huge fan, but I thought everyone on there knew that already), but they've not been hyped for no reason. They've been releasing albums and touring non stop (seriously. I've been able to see them three times in a year in Lille - I mean, that's not New York or London. That's Lille), evolving constantly (it's not like they've been doing the same formula for 9 years), exploring a broad range of music, from noise to freak folk to electronic pop to blahblahblah. |
by the way this is a power chihuahua
![]() may i tell you, you'd rather not deal with it |
not fucking with that chihuahua

was "nob end" directed at miles?

Sonic Youth always have been 'cool', and probably always will be. Thankfully, they're not 'hot', and I don't think they have ever been--not even in the early '90s. There's a big difference between 'cool' and 'hot'. Lady Gaga is 'hot'. Do you want that for Sonic Youth?
"'Cool' is involving. 'Hot' is not."--Marshall McLuhan (I think) |
they're cooler than anything else going on in the music scene at the moment
imo |
yea. way cool.

keith richards. who is miles? |
SY are just as cool and relevant as ever, they just dont make albums like they used to. They have tons of side projects and interests and they all have families. As for the Rolling Stones, they should have retired in the early 70's and spared their leggacy from being tarnished by everything that followed Exile on Main St. which isnt even that great of a record to begin with.
|
Long live Tyler and yes, J-Jagger. I know they can.
Sonic Youth are cool. Cool is mild self-consciousness, following your peers and then going back to your own thing. It's a cool economy that SY perform in, though. |
SY probably are cool. The problem is that's probably all they are now.
|
i'd say "too cool for school". Where's the poll, Genteel?
|
I'd say Sonic Youth are infinitely uncool in a very cool way. The only thing that is less cool (in a hip way) is to spend time denigrating a band on their own website message board.

Cool in the way that they've made amazing music in the past, yes. Cool that there is a lot of history there, a lot of great stories to tell. The immense level of influence they've had on other bands is pretty cool, too.
As far as where they currently stand, they are kinda like the Dead. Fun to follow, but haven't evolved much musically in ages. Sometimes I wonder if Nurse will forever stand as their last AMAZING record. I hope not. They're still are one of my favorite bands, but not because of anything they've done over the last few years. |
Nobody has been cool since the Fonz.
