What is it that people love so much about EVOL. I find it okay, but it's definately nowhere near my favorite. i've noticed a lot of people have it as their favorite. ? Tell me how it turns you on.

Its music and lyrics are great, but I don't think it's the best thing they made, it would be number 3 or even 4...

I really love the songs, and the atmosphere, but it doesent have the certain 'it' that BMR has, or Confusion...

I love it. I'm not very articulate when it comes to describing why I like music.

For me, just listening to Death to Our Friends and Secret Girl back to back makes me realize how great this album is. But, really, every song has something to it. It's one of my favorites.

This album is damn near my favorite for many reasons. The themes of this album are about experienceing things and newness I think. It relates a lot to teenage wildlife. Everything's new and seems exciting until it dies at around 25 or earlier. You have the love songs: Green Light and Starpower. You have the rockers: Bubblegum and Tom Violence. All of the other songs are damn brilliant as well. The rocking sonic narrative In the Kingdom #19 is brilliant. This entire album hints at Sister and beyond but is definitly its own thing. The cover is another great love of mine. LUNG LEG. You have to love that. Kim songs are just as strong as Thurston songs and overall it's really balanced out. SECRET GIRL!!!!! Totally eerie on Kim's part.....Like she's in an old attic full of used 1940's toys. The piano in the background is like a little music box.............completly creepy goodness. Shadow of a Doubt is great. Like witnessing a murder on a subway......not that that's good or anything but that's what it makes me think of. When Kim says "she knows how to make love to me" I always get a little stimulated. Overall, this record is amazing. I could go on about it but i think Ive said enough. Hopefully this gives you reasons to like this album.

evol is my favorite at the moment.

Yeah, our favorites change all the time, but Evol is so awesome because of the crazy atmosphere, the music and lyrics are just so chilling. I love it.

And a little number called Expressway...

I'm not a huge fan of it. It's good, but not one of my favorites. I like CiS way more. I think Kingdom is actually the best song on the CD.

I know, I didnt mention every song. They're all amazing but I think I would have gone on for an hour if I kept speaking about it.

it was my 2nd sonic youth album. my 1st was dirty so i guess it opened my eyes to what they were capable of doing. i think it's a real solid album

I didn't know it was this popular amongst SY fans but I personally think it's really consistent. Definitely one of their best if not THE best.

It's definitely my favorite. It's the dark, noisy atmosphere of the album that (nearly) all other SY albums lack. Very moody and emotional

I thoroughly enjoy the record's music. However, I find the production a bit thin. I'm hoping for a deluxe, remastered edition in the vein of DN. All the original tracks 'warmed and thickened up' with bonuses, then disc 2 to be FAT tracks live. It's just that their 80s albums to me don't have the umphh in sound that I believe they can have with today's restoration.

I'm waiting for BMR to be upgraded too.

It is, in my opinion, the best record ever recorded.

What do you think about the recording quality as I mentioned above ? I'd be curious to hear your opinion considering it's your fave of all time. :)

the drums tend to sound a bit eighties-ish with all that reverb but with all that incredible greatness going on, i hardly notice it. read the liner notes of the cd reissue, that sums up the vibe of the album. it's a record about experience. leaving your home, making plans, visions of violence, dying in a car crash. making shit happen. love. hate. fun. childhood. everyone i gave that record to says it changed their lives. and everytime i listen to it, it's as fresh as ever. a true classic and one of the best records i know.

I've actually said in other threads about "production values" that I wish more albums SOUNDED the way EVOL sounds. The drums in particular have a very specific feel to them. I love the recording quality of it. It's perfect. Like a grainy slasher film, this should never be re-mastered.

Fair enough, I can appreciate your thoughts. I like how you compare to a grainy slasher flick (black & white). So how 'bout they DO rework it and release it, that way you AND I can keep our original issues as they are AND have the option for a 'fattened up' (colorized) version. :D Or at least repackage with bonus's AND a super live recording of the album ala DDN. :rolleyes:

evol-evil but acessible. its an amazing record, it took the dark atmosphere and guitar noise experiments that were prominent on the early records, but it was also when the band was coming into thier own as pop song writers. evol was the first sonic youth record that gave us a full glimpse of what the band was really all about. it also has a song called "express way to yr. skull" which none other than neil young describes as the "greatest guitat song of all time"

i love evol too but i think Sister and BMR are even better

I totally disagree with that statement (and I love the record). Evol gave us a full glimpse of the pop side of the band that would become increasingly important and thematically integrated the pop culture side of things they'd been flirting with on stage for over a year.

However, Bad Moon Rising and Confusion is Sex are every bit as much what the band is "really all about" and they have returned to that side of their music just as frequently through the years. It's just that the Silver Sessions and SYR 3 don't exactly connect with as big of an audience Goo and Sonic Nurse. Doesn't make it any less of what the band is about.

I loved Evol when it came out in 1986 and I still do today. Bad Moon Rising was and is my favorite album ever, and I was relieved they had the good sense to go in a completely different direction rather than try to remake perfection.

As the years go by, I find my favorite track to return to is "In the Kingdom #19", perhaps because it is less of a blueprint for many Sonic Youth songs to come than "Starpower" and "Shadow of a Doubt" were (though I still love them too).

I think EVOL is the first really great SY-album.. listening to it just make me smile, and I rate it top three behind Sister and DDN....

i kind of group BMR and Evol together. They're different to each other but they're the most atmospheric albums - both conjur up some good mental imagery.

2nd best record of theirs. i like reading a book or laying around doing nothing to the album.

the mid 80's is my fav SY period - it seems to be dreamier and kind of like psychedelia meets punk or something. took me a little while to get used to the production but then *click*!!

el, yr right. The "click" is one of the finest moments in musical history.

I love evol its got a real dark vibe to it and it has a great drum sound.
