World Cup 2010: South Africa ponders vuvuzela ban
There are limits to cultural tolerance, aren't there?
I hope these blowing horns will be banned from inside stadiums. Viewers can't hear ball kicks. They drown out supporters' songs. Players can't communicate well because of the noise. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/foot...10/8737455.stm |
that's getting a bit much really, even on TV.
out of respect please. |
Let them party in any way they see fit I say
|
this is irrelevant to the thread but i found this and need to post it somewhere
![]() nostril of god |
fuckin shit, ive had to tweak my audio settings during matches cuz i couldn't hear shit except for the swarm of mad bees coming out of the speakers.
the trick is to drop all the treble & take some of the bass out & you can hear the, what's the word, sportscasters? you know, the people who name the players, comment, etc.? they're mostly on the midrange. still you hear the noise but the voice is clearer. i can imagine this must be torture for the players, holy mother of fuck, that's how they got noriega out of the vatican embassy in panama-- noise torture (in his case i think it was guns n roses). anyway fuck yes, BAN THEM NOW. they make no fucking sense, they don't work for one team or another, it's just this constant fucking noise, what breathing exercises for the crowd or something? fuckem. burn them. DO IT NOW. |

NO. |

i think they sound like a Jim O'Rourke record
|
i don't mind them
|
It's made watching it more tolerable. It reminds me of Scelsi.
|
SUNN O))) will use them for the new record.
|
I don't mind them either... at least not on TV.
They'd probably drive me nuts if I were inside the stadium. From what I read they reach up to 130 decibels and the fans start blowing them as soon as they enter the stadium (i.e. you'd be hearing them constantly for about 3-4 hours). |
i think the English 'band' are much worse. 2 songs. 2 fucking songs for the last 33 years. If i hear "the great escape" 1 more time i'll get cross and mutter under my breath
|
watching now and i love this shit, sounds better than electric rock guitars for sure
|
definitely.
someone had to do it: ![]() |
it reminds me of the toy horns they sell at the brass band contest in serbia, 4 days of this sound, 24 hours
|

loudness. love noise of all types
|
well i like silence.
|
I prefer to hear the crowds singing and chanting back and forth at one another which gives the game an ebb and flow feeling. These horns just
make for one long steady noise that drown out the emotions of the game. |
sounds like a symphony by Glenn Branca.
|
fuck the emotions of the game if you need the crowd to tell you how to feel man.
even without the noisemakers, I have never seen an international match that was not constant noise, steady, regardless of source. |

why do you listen to sonic youth ???? ;) |
I don't listen to music all the time. I spend most of the time in silence.
|
How do you drown out your thoughts then?
|
My thoughts are beautiful.

I can't stand this uniform bee/elephant sound during 90 min, I turn the sound off quite early. |
You are one lucky person knox.
you should smile more! |
Smiling is overrated.
|
NEVER!!!!

that's right-- it's pure unadulterated shit-- an unbearable meaningless drone and if it's hurting the game, i say burn the fucking trumpets. |

I don't know, it is a bit overwhelming true, but when it mixes with the regular horns and the intense drumming, the US/UK game was the first to keep me on my feet for its entirety in a LONG time, and I think the drums and vuvuzela played a major role in that, it kept me marching forward like the Nyahbinghi drumming keeps ini heart straight forth trodding along the kings i-ghway.. I say keep em, all countries have their annoying and loud futbol traditions, this is just the Africans. and since when was this kind of plastic horn uniquely african? We used to blow the SHIT out of those things during parades and american football games back in the day, honestly I was surprised to see all the negative feedback to something that was already quite familiar to me long before the world cup publicity. |
feedback, thats what they need. Vuvuzelas with feedback
|
and distortion.
I love those fucking things. Futbol matches are always buzzing. no big whup. the guys on Univision drown out the trumpets |

I don't need the crowd to tell me how I feel. I love the emotions of the fans their sing and drumming and yelling. The horns are just noise that takes away a part of the game that I enjoy. |

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to pbradley again. |
hahahahha!
|
i dont mind the noise at all. it makes me feel nostalgic
watching soccer with my dad and wondering what the hell that noise was.. funny how some of you people listen to complete and utter noise for pleasure and you can't stand a droning hum noise that really isn't that loud at all on tv |
Quote:
the difference is i listen to utter noise when i feel like, and in this case i haven't got much choice. besides, what's a world cup without players insulting each others sisters and getting into fights? they can't even hear each other. |
