It's the full 5-piece Hijokaidan line-up of Toshiji Mikawa, Jojo Hiroshige, Fumio Kosakai, Junko and Okano Futoshi from Subvert Blaze on drums.

What are Hijokaidan like anyway? I always see them mentioned but ive no idea what they sound like. Im assuming you like them pokkeherrie, but tell the group why..

they're up there with merzbow in terms of legends of japanese noise, they just aren't as prolific so aren't as well known. look for videos of their live performances online, particularly any from the early 80s. pure filth/chaos/carnage/disorder.

they've been planning this for months, i was told that smegma wouldn't be playing though, and nobody said anythnig about hijokaidan, so I will look ask around and find out if that line up is correct.

I don't know... because of their harshness, their intensity, the total chaos, the complete aural assault? What I do know is that I'd really like to see them live. And Incapacitants. And Smegma. And the other LAFMS artists.

I wonder how much more they'll be adding. As far as I'm concerned this lineup could already rival whichever No Fun lineup from the last few years, not to mention it's a lot closer than NYC. I really have to keep this one in mind.... fuck, I should probably just go!

The Lowest Form Of Music is the first ever event in the UK dedicated to the work and influence of the legendary Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS). This weekend of performance, film screenings and discussion will explore the legacy of one of the avant-garde’s great unsung movements.

The missing link between the far out West Coast freakscene that spawned Zappa and Beefheart and the worldwide explosion of DIY experimental culture, LAFMS is a must check for all those with an interest in underground alternative culture. Using humour, collage and buckets full of the bizarre, this collective kicked the early 70s out of its post-Manson nightmare and into the avant-gutter of a pre-punk endzone.

The influence LAFMS has had on the explosion of international DIY culture is immeasurable. Explicitly acknowledged as a motivation for the emergence of the Japanese noise scene in the 1980s, as well as being cited specifically by the likes of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and John Olson (Wolf Eyes), the collective that emerged in LA in 1973 resulted in countless adventurous music lovers tasting the delights of a new kind of creative freedom and getting out there and doing it for themselves.

The Lowest Form of Music will take place over an extended weekend at Beaconsfield in South London, a venue “distinguished by its history of providing a forum for extraordinary events and exhibitions”. The programme will feature a host of LAFMS artists and groups presenting performances, talks, exhibitions, films screenings and workshops.

Confirmed LAFMS artists performing at The Lowest Form Of Music include:

Airway, Le Forte Four, Smegma, Dennis Duck, John Duncan, Ace Farren Ford, Joseph Hammer, Fredrik Nilsen, Joe Potts, Rick Potts, Tom Recchion, Takuya Sakaguchi, Jackie Stewart aka Oblivia, Rick Stewart aka Ju Suk Reet Meate, Vetza, and John Wiese.

Special guests also performing over the weekend include the originators of the Japanese noise scene and LAFMS disciples Hijokaidan and Incapacitants.

Talks and panel discussions around LAFMS and its worldwide influence will feature artist and critic David Toop, Incapacitants’ Toshiji Mikawa and artist, composer and original LAFMS member Tom Recchion.

Hijokaidan were one of the best things I've ever seen, I was gutted they didn't do an encore. I really enjoyed Smegma also, although I would have liked it if they'd played longer. Too bad I missed Airway & Incapacitants although seeing your video footage made up for it.

Where is the video footage?!

Shame that I wasn't able to make it to the Saturday in the end because it got totally and utterly sold out at the last minute. I was so looking forward to see Incapacitants. Merzbow last night more than made up for that though. He gave me an out of body experience to last me a lifetime. He was incredible.

Amazing festival!

Smegma were a bit of a letdown in my opinion, their set was too structured for my liking and already over before I started to get into it. I liked The Tenses' set on Sunday much better.

I generally didn't enjoy much of the Friday night sets, but Saturday and Sunday more than made up for it.
Incapacitants were AWESOME, a really intense performance.
Airway were AMAZING, pity I didn't have a good view until the encore (in which they got a second drummer and takuya sakaguchi to play with them - I counted 9 people on stage!)
I really enjoyed Dinosaurs With Horns On Sunday, again pity that I couldn't see that much.
Hijokaidan killed all and destroyed everything, a more than PERFECT ending to the weekend. It was really an endurance test to stay up front, with the crowd pushing me from left and right and behind and Jojo occasionally pushing me with his microphone stand from the front. Junko fled more and more to the back of the stage because of people falling over. It was wild. Really a brilliant performance.

Heh, it looks so much more pussy on youtube compared to being there physically. I wish Junko could be heard more clearly, I heard her like she sounds in the video. I was wondering if she could be heard more clearly by people standing further at the back (i.e. not "behind" the PA like I and the person who took this video were)
