SY Freebie 7/31 Prospect Park Brooklyn NY
Well I'm starting this thread for posting of information about the free appearance of Sonic Youth with Talk Normal and Grass Window.
Doors open at 6:00, Showtime 7:00 to 10:00. Below is a link about the show thanks to Georgekrz. What I'd like to know is, is there ample parking or should I look to park elsewhere and hop a bus or use the subway to get there. How big of an area is it? Is 10:00 an absolute must on stop time? Any seating in the area or is it all field? http://www.bricartsmedia.org/events/...ow-talk-normal |
normally they have seats in front and standing in the back. security is pretty strict about getting people to sit down and clear the aisles. Normal median age for a show there is prob. around 70 (slightly exaggerating...). folks just show up cause it's a free show. Seen many shows there and only one I didnt get in was for David Byrne, had to stand outside the fence which still wasn't that bad. But I saw Deerhoof and Blonde Redhead there and had no problem getting in or getting a good spot.
|
i wish celebrate brooklyn would issue tickets for this one like river to river did with the july 4th show. shit was insane enough when david byrne played there last summer. i can't imagine what SY is going to be like.
i'm going to be there right when the park opens. |
I plan to listen from outside the prison walls. Listened to Yo La Tengo from there and it sounded good. To answer the first poster's question, parking is a nightmare in park slope.
|
Since parking is a nightmare how about suggestions on easy access parking and subway or bus transportation the rest of the way to the show. So if the gates open at 6:00 would getting there at say 3:00 be to late to get in line to get in? Given that their stage show isn't the show, the music is the show I don't have a problem sitting on the outside as long as I can hear.
What's the deal on ATP at Monticello Country Club is that worth the $120.00 for the day that they're charging? Might be an alternative. |
getting there at 3:00 should surely get you in.
|
Went to see the Roots there yesterday and it was insanely crowded. Also from what I could tell they had standing room only set up (no chairs), which I hope they do for SY as well. You can definitely get a good spot if you want to sit outside the fence or get there late, there's a road that runs behind the fence, also a little hill.
pictures from the Roots: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archive...ly_c.html#more actually I can't tell if there were chairs or not, too many people! haha. I don't think it will get that crowded for SY, but who knows... |
I hope to hell I can make this one.
|
I was wondering if anyone knew for certain if you are allowed to bring a lawn chair inside. I may be having spine surgery before this show. If i can tuck my dumb ass on a lawn chair and keep out of everyones way it should work. If not I might just stay outside. From all i've heard that might work best. Any imput would be appreciated. Damn getting old sucks
|
I will be planning to attend...I hope I can make it.
|
definitely going to try to attend. i love sy summer shows
|
I just love SY shows.....
|
I'll be there!
|
I should be arriving 'round noon or so...see y'all there.
|
no setlist Vol.2 shapin' up, eh!
Have fun guys, sometimes I wish I lived somewhere in USA. |
Well my kids are going away to the beach with their Mom that day so I'm flying solo. I wish the trains or buses ran hourly out of Worcester so I would have the option of leaving my wheels at home. How is security about bring a few brewskis to the park with you?

you'll be searched at the gates and there are lots of pigs floating around in uniform and in plainsclothes looking to make their arrest quotas by busting some easy going white kids with some beers. NYC has fucking narcs in unmarked cars riding around looking at what people are smoking. I don't recommend it. remember, its a police state, they're just too ashamed to tell us. |
Thanks for the heads up. I don't drink very often anyways so I guess I'll just refrain if I go. I'm in trouble smoking as I smoke camel non-filter.

it wouldn't be any fun if there wasn't a challenge - just be careful! Bloomberg actually wants to make it illegal for you to smoke your Camels in the parks. The guy is a fucking tyrant. some poor child might get a whiff of tobacco. Never mind Bloomie's private jet probably equals all the smokers smoke. How did we get a Bermudan (Bermudian?) as a mayor - yes Virginia new yorkers were that dumb. the weather is supposed to be perfect Sat, not hot, not humid, about 80. |

aww shit. |
so Pot is not recommended?
|
I'm gonna bring bottles of water from Duane Reade. So illicit. Breakin' the law
breakin' the law. |
I hear you tesla69!
It will be perfect day. I will have my 1-hitter smoke box as usual for all my SY shows. Bloomy won't ruin my good time. |
Just smoke pot in the thick of the crowd and be smart.
|

this is what I plan(ed) but telsa made it sound impossinble. |
it really isn't. there was plenty of pot-smoking at the national show last night (wtf, i know), but no one really seemed to care.
i guess it must have been easier to crack down on it last year when the venue was all seated and you could actually have a good view of what people were doing. now that they took the seats out (well, except for the very very back), it's much easier for that to go unnoticed in a crowd. |
if you keep it low you'll probably be ok especially if you're in the thick of things but be careful. Have they banned cigarettes yet in the concert area? My experience in Central Park was a very thorough and invasive search so hide yr shit well...maybe they're more relaxed in Brooklyn?
|
Sonic will be a 4 piece for this gig. Expect some Retro SY.
|
Quote:
fuck yes! 4 piece! |
YES, Classic 4 pc SY!!
Can not wait!! |
is there an 'official' boardie afterparty?
|
Youtell me. I just got here from Chicago with two friends. We kind of want to go for drinks afer dinner. Any suggestions? (somewhat cheap would be nice)
|
I'm broke as the proverbial dog dick, otherwise I'd be hanging out after.
Pretty much the SY show is going to make me forget momentarily that I need to meet up with a job pretty soon or be homeless. |
7pm talk normal
7:45pm grass widow 8:40 sonic youth |
there are two gates into the venue
water bottles are allowed-plastic or metal NO GLASS |
there's two gates, but the line will probably be at the 9th st. entrance. i think they only use the other entrance for unloading crap now.
|
they had seats set up yesterday for Swell Season, so, I think it might be the same set up today. We shall see. FYI there's a 10 foot high chain link fence running all the way around the grounds... Lot of people hopped that little waist high fence when the Roots played so maybe that's why they put that up now. And the F train is running on the C line in Brooklyn today so take the G, you can transfer on Hoyt-Schermehorn (if you're taking the subway).
See you in the pit! Should be a great show, shows there always sound great. |
Enjoy the show one and all. Unfortunately I'm stuck being a Dad today which means I'm responsible for bailing my son's car out of the mechanic's shop when he finishes it. Should be a great show as they're probably getting tired of playing Eternal every night and will dip into the past.
