SY : Please Sell SBD's of Your Shows

I don't see why Sonic Youth can't sell a soundboard mp3 format of their live shows. If you charge a fair price of $9.99 for each show, it will be a great money maker and the fans would love it.

While I'm on this idea, anyone get a recording of the 7.31.10 Prospect Park show?

noisereductions 08.11.2010 11:47 AM

I like that they choose specific shows to release personally.

jnic 08.11.2010 12:24 PM

Then they should release Brooklyn 7.31.10 in it's entirety, no edits.
That was a perfect show from beginning to end.

noisereductions 08.11.2010 12:44 PM

I'll tell them.

jnic 08.11.2010 12:49 PM

^ That would rule!
In all the NYC SY shows I've seen since 1998 (never missed one yet), that one was the greatest, tightest, funnest (is that a word?!) show I've ever been witness to.
Thank you!

tesla69 08.11.2010 01:19 PM

MP3's? You want at least .wav files. It cracks me up that people actually pay for a stupid MP3 - it would be like if satellite radio was AM quality and they were asking you to pay for it.

jnic 08.11.2010 01:35 PM

^ok, then i'll take .wav files. I just want a SBD of shows, I won't be too picky.

Chris Lawrence 08.11.2010 09:34 PM

if they sold soundboard flacs of complete shows (no edits, no missing songs, no matter how sour a note may be) for $10 a hit, from all eras of their career, i'd buy em til i went broke.

mp3s of edited shows? nah. that's free download territory.

i know they have a massive archive - possibly they feel the demand may not justify the effort, but this is something i would really, really like to see happen.

I'd prefer they just went thru the archives and started picking really ace shows to release... like maybe one from 81-85, 86-89, 90-94, etc etc. Or just really special shows, like some of the SYR shows or the 9/5/00 impromptu Lee, SS, Jim O and PJ show, etc.

Georgekrz 08.12.2010 08:29 AM

hopefully they backed up the files and store them in more than one location...

It would be great though, no doubt.

You should be picky. We're not consumers in China where things are 'good enough'. If you're going PAY for a SB why downgrade it by converting to MP3?

Anyway, there are tons of great sounding shows floating around out there.

jnic 08.12.2010 11:33 AM

I just want a complete SY show from the SBD, which ever way they feel ok to release. $10 for a complete show in flac format would be ok with me.

ennui61 08.14.2010 04:02 PM

This is a great idea in any format. The Prospect Park show was amazing from start to finish. I'ld love to get the McCarren Pool shows also. I think a lot of people might want files from shows they've seen as a lasting memory of the evening. Hell can't say I've ever seen a bad SY show.

too funny.

Some other bands have been doing this already since a few years (ex. Pearl Jam), SY could and should do this too. People can choose online to buy mp3 or FLAC versions

akprodr 08.24.2010 07:15 AM

Isn't SBD an acronym for silent but deadly?

noisereductions 08.24.2010 07:22 AM

I don't like this.

Phish does this. Recent shows from this past tour were available within 1 hour after the show. The band is not making profit from these releases, the money goes to their charity.

http://sonicyouth.utkonos.org/upload.html

try visiting here folks looking for SY shows quite an extensive library in FLAC format.

sy2004 08.26.2010 10:30 AM

No, just listen to Pearl Jam's SBD bootlegs, they are no silent and not deadly at all. Since SY doesn't allow SBD recordings anymore since 'that' incident, this would be great addition. For the rest, utkonos is great too.

What incident was that?

Some people on here should know more about it, it's about a gig where a soundboard plug from a bootlegger made a soundboard blow up

since that incident, as I was told by some here, SY doesn't allow soundboard recordings anymore

Probably you have to go back to 2005 as I think the last real SBD bootleg is this one:
Malmö Folkets Park - Stora Scenen -, Sweden
5. July 2005

Andrés 08.27.2010 11:16 AM

$ell?? Why not let them be freesofree :)

I had no idea about that incident. Anyone'd like to tell the whole story

Chris Lawrence 08.27.2010 01:18 PM

never heard that either.

if they went to the effort of choosing and mixing great shows and making them available, i don't see any harm in rewarding those efforts by paying for them, either. otherwise, we already have hundreds of shows available for free online.

I'm not an electrical engineer, but is it even possible that a recorder supplies enough power to blow out the soundboard? Sounds far-fetched....

And here's a soundboard from 2006:
http://db.etree.org/lookup_show.php?...how_users=true.

that could be the last one instead, indeed.

Anyway, I was told this story by some long time members a couple of years ago on this board, I remember reading about it somewhere else too but for now, I can't find it (yet) but in SY bootleg history, you'll find almost at least 1 SBD recording of each tour but not for 2007, 2008, 2009 or 2010... (not counting FM/TV-recordings as SBD)

True but at least one SBD from each tour would be great too.

Chris Lawrence 08.30.2010 12:58 AM

oh, absolutely! but i see no harm in paying for a great SBD from the band's archives.

Also true, if made professionally and officially released by the band, I would buy those.

sy2004 08.30.2010 05:45 AM

about the SBD incident, there's some talk about it here too (true or not):
http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=3447
if it's not true, why isn't there any SBD bootleg from the 2007 till now?

I guess/know there are other reason(s), but it's bad etiquette to quote from private emails.

tesla69 08.30.2010 04:47 PM

This "taper fried the soundboard" sounds like urban myth. Doesn't seem possible unless they plugged into the wrong jack. I've found bands don't allow sb because the venue wants to charge for it, or the venue doesnt allow it, or they just don't want to deal with it.

Who quoted private emails?
