People commenting on songs you like
Alright, I guess everyone's been in this kind of situation: You got company, either your friends, your significant other or relatives and there's a song playing you really like. But suddenly someone comments on that song (can be whole albums aswell), this could either be a naive rant, praise or whatnot. Let's share some of the funniest and most interesting comments you've heard in your life. I'll start:
'This sounds incredibly porn-like' - Nadja about the intro of "Intruders" by Recoil 'I feel like throwing myself in front of a train now' - A friend of mine after listening to the Sonic Youth LP 'Oh my god, this sounds ugly' - 'Haha, I just had a deja vu' - My mother commenting on "Four Rusted Horses" by Marilyn Manson; my sister commenting on my mother's comment 'Whoa, this started just like the duck-tales theme" - Nadja about "Enslaved" by Diva Destruction |
I was listening to one of my all time favorite songs, Slowdive's "Blue Skied an Clear", at a party, and this dude I didn't know said "the singer sounds like a fucing faggot." And my jaw dropped, as did my friend's, who was standing next to me.... And I finally mustered out a, "Wow... you're... a fucking idiot.." and the guy stared at me for a few seconds and walked off. And I haven't seen him since. Weird moment.

"is that alvin from the chipmunks?" - a workmates comment on atlas by battles whilst giving him a life in the postvan........ smug fucker walked the rest of the way!

I haven't really met that many people insightful enough to make interesting comments on songs/bands/albums, that is comments that weren't just extremely binary, 'that songs great, that song sucks'.
Well a few months ago I introduced a friend to Polvo and he really took to them. He got really absorbed into Today's Active Lifestyles and I burned Exploded Drawing for him. And he'd always make these comments about the band comparing them to Sonic Youth. He'd say roughly that Polvo was just the right amount of weird to him, and that Sonic Youth just went too far into weird territory. And that always baffled me because I always thought there were quite several SY records that are considerably tamer than Today's Active Lifestyles. Dirty and Murray St. being the only one that comes to mind. He also has a really bad habit of making extremely gut reaction statements, that he doesn't really think through. Like after one listen of In Prism 'Beggar's Bowl is the best song Polvo has ever written.' or that GBV's Vampire On Titus was not a good record. In which case I told him to listen to it 50 more times, or until he liked it, whichever came first. And he had this to say about Sun City Girls' Space Prophet Dogon "I can't say anything positive about it." And I almost beat him up when he didn't like the last Gastr Del Sol record because it wasn't rockin' enough for him. |
I was in gym class playing DDN and a dude commented "What is this shit playing? It's horrible. I'm going to put some Death from Above on instead"
...yeah dude, DFA met at a Sonic Youth show. |
hahahaha, that's great.
That reminds me of this time I was going to the movies with some people and the driver had Rites of Spring in his cd player and the guy riding shotgun kind of wrinkles his eyebrows and nose after a couple of minutes and says "What-are-we-listening to? This is horrible! Don't you have any Papa Roach you can play instead?" Those of us in the back lost it. |
Quote:
That is absolutely hilarious. Personally, I've pretty much given up on recommending music to others. Whether it's Sonic Youth, Boredoms, or ICP... most just generally look confused. |
one of my friends said the all the singing on DDN sounds like someone throwing up. and that they needed to tune their instruments. uh... they are tuned.
|
i know someone who said to me about joy division that they " were just trying to rip off the killers"................ i did rant repeatedly at them!
|
I've had about a thousand (maybe not) people talking about Hurt by NiN. "Ohh I love NiN's cover of Hurt!"
NO IT IS NIN'S SONG JOHNNY CASH COVERED IT GO AWAY |
yep..that happens a lot, even saw that mistake mentioned on telly and radio. no excuse!

this. |
I was listening to some Melt Banana with my nephew and my brother walks in and asks, "is this elmo singing?"
I just gave him a blank stare. |
Quote:
That's so not true! Duran Duran were ripping off the Killers. Joy Division were ripping off Interpol. |

Has anyone else ever been lucky enough to catch Melt Banana live? They seriously put on one of the best, and most intensive shows I've ever seen.
|
I've seen them, I made a thread about it ages ago actually.

Hahaha, that's excellent. I've never heard that one before. I've heard the Interpol one zillions of times, but not Killers, that's awesome. Semi-on topic but more related to uneducated music listeners making bonehead mistakes like this one. In my senior year of high school, my english class was down in the computer lab to type up these book reports or some paper we had to write. And if you got finished early you could pretty much do whatever you wanted for the rest of the period. Well there was this guy listening to some music he had downloaded that he brought in. A couple of friends and I decided to go talk to him about it, because we liked what he was playing. On the particular instant we walked over there, some Led Zeppelin song was on, I can't remember specifically which one, Rock and Roll I think, something from IV. So my friend says to him "Hey Cody, you like Led Zeppelin too? This track is great, IV is my favorite record of theirs." something along those lines. Cody then crooks up his eyebrow and kind of deadpans "This isn't Led Zeppelin." "Uh yeah it is. That's Rock and Roll right there." "No it's not. This is Van Halen." "WHAT? No way man. That is not Van Halen. That is CLEARLY Led Zeppelin." Then he gave us one of those you know (man, how much of an idiot are you?) looks and then pointed at his open Windows Media Player to the current song title for his irrefutable evidence. "Look...Van Halen." I don't know how but the song was mislabeled as Van Halen, uh Atomic Punk I think. We tried to convince him that it was really Led Zeppelin but he was unmoveable, dead set convinced that it was really Van Halen. I didn't know what to say to him. I mean, how to do convince someone who confuses two of the most famous bands on the planet? |

Saw 'en last year, I think I posted some pics In a thread around here. Amazing show, loved every second. Oh yeah they did songs off the second half of bambis dilemma(mxbxlite?) but that shit. Was awesome! I forget the songs name but he song after dog song was so fucking intense live!!! |
Sorta back on topic...
I once tried showing my father Eraserhead. 15 minutes in, he informed me that people would think I was retarded if I ever tried showing it to anyone else. He then drove up to the video store, and rented Big Mama's House 2 - which he loved. |
"what the fuck is this? i can make same shit with an electric toothbrush in my mouth." - my brother on hearing merzbow for the first time
|
My sister when I played her the music ''Are you sure? Is that really you?''. She then muttered something about how she is happy about me being creative and turned the thing off.
|
Juno told me once that Sonic Youth just sounds like a bunch of noise.
|
Quote:
yep.....about a year ago... and agreed..stunning live band. |
I let my boss (who is into pop country) listen to the Destroyed Room and she just made some really wierd faces at me.
|
Quote:
yah. I've had people just ask me "why?" when I've put on Merzbow. |
Quote:
Melt Banana wouldn't get the time of day if they weren't Japanese. So over-hyped it is sick. If it was just a bunch of white kids from America they would be laughed at. |
Quote:
Oh god, people think I'm absolutely insane if I ever try introducing them to Merzbow! It's almost as if they expect me to go "just kidding!" at the end. I once showed Diamanda Galas' video for Double Barrel Prayer to a trained singer, in hopes that maybe she'd find the structure of the song to be hip, and intriguing. Instead she was just hung up on the weirdness of it all. Go figure. |
Enough of my friends have had some bullshit to say about Daniel Johnston. Who happens to be one of my favorite song writers. I don't even wanna repeat any of that ignorant mess.. Whatever though. to each his own
|
I hear ya Murmer. All through high school all the people I hung out with A. weren't familiar with the music I was really interested in (SY, Lightning Bolt, Deerhoof, stranger than normal stuff like that), and B. when I'd try to talk to them about it, they'd always react really negatively.
So it was an uphill battle for a long time to get ANYONE interested in Sonic Youth. I got this one guys girlfriend to listen to them and enjoy them. But she only liked certain albums sparingly, mostly just Dirty really. She hated ATL. But what I've found to kind of work is just kind of systematically work their way to those kind of bands via more gateway-ish bands. Like oh you like those 60's bands, maybe you'll like Velvet Underground, as that's easier to take than SY I guess. Like Ramones? You'll dig Black Flag. That's been fairly effective. I'm working on getting this one guy into Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 right now. He likes Polvo, so I shouldn't have to do much. I don't think I'll be able to get any of them into Caroliner though. |

i think Daniel Johnston is great. theres something about the song "Lazy" that makes me want to listen to it over and over again.. the opening and closing piano riffs are just amazing. |
and i don't know.. ive just never had the desire to get anyone into the music i listen to. and it wouldnt disappoint me if i had a friend who disliked a band i recommended them. i dont want to make anyone feel guilty for not having the same preference as i do. and i certainly dont want anyone pretending to like something to please someone else either.. they'd be lying to themselves. it does nothing for me, it isnt going to make me like or dislike the sound of it any more than i did before.

nico singin'
friend: is she mentally retarded? me: no, she's german. friend: same thing. |
Yeah, Joe, I've seen MB twice and they're by far the best live band I've ever seen. I think they should be on everyone's list of bands to see before they die.
Quote:
Did someone else say this, and you decided to post it on here so we can laugh at it? |
Quote:
Hahaha, that's a riot. I will admit when I first listened to the Velvet Underground I was caught off guard by her way of singing. It's great, but certainly strange. |
yes same here, it took me a while to like her singing.. it was just strange as count mecha said. but after a few more listens i ended up loving it. Femme Fatale was the song..
|
Of all my concert going pals who I've seen well over a 100 shows with never mind riding around listening to 8 tracks then cassettes with, I am the only one who listens to Sonic Youth. Comments like Garbage, Are you serious, No fucking way, get that shit off now, she sounds like a cat stuck under a tire and so on. I'm sure you get the picture.

I work in a radio newsroom, and one of our reporters was doing a story about the last batch of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was on the air reading over the list of artists being inducted and when he got to The Stooges, the guy next to me turns and says, "The Stooges!? Why the hell would they put a comedy troupe into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!? What do The Stooges have to do with music!?"
I stared at him like he was the dumbest person I had ever encountered in my life, and he goes, "What? Were they a band too!?" I just said, "Yeah... yeah they were." and went back to what I was working on. |
HAHA He was really thinking of the The Three Stooges? That's out of control!

Ha, even some of my friends that are into experimental don't take kindly to Caroliner when I show them. I fucking love em. I recently wrote a review of them while on MDMA on a friend's blog that primarily focuses on metal, interested in if it sparked any kind of reaction: http://www.bloodyunderrated.net/2010...-by-robin.html. -Back when I was living with the folks, I'd play SunnO))) and my parents would come into my room and say "Good lord, how are you supposed to dance to this?! It's just feedback" followed by them pretending to try and dance to it. I'd tell them dancing to it involves bowing to the winterdemons. -Often when dealing with people's parents that know I like different vibes than them say something like "NO FUCKING NOISE. Anyone could make shit that sounds like that". It doesn't bother me at all anymore, I usually just laugh and tell them they're missing the point. |
