ipod hacks
 

i got given an ipod today and was wondering about hacks, namely is it possible to install some form of interface other than itunes, and is it possible to hack it so that i can plug it into other computers without having to wipe the memory?

rockbox should do the trick...check faqs, manual and compatibility to make sure it's ok for your ipod model.

hope that hacking works out for you, otherwise if it's still in the original packaging you might be able to sell it for a decent price on ebay and buy a normal mp3 player instead.

You can plug it into other computers if you don't sync it, if you manually put the music on then it shouldn't be a problem.

Winamp supports iPods by the way. I'd never touch iTunes, not even with the arm of a dead hooker.

i realized earlier i have no idea of what kind of ipod we're talking about (old, new, ceremonial, junk) so there are too many variables to consider

then of course i could spend 4 hours composing a hypothetical technical manual based on fantasy but i'm sure a factual version is googable somewhere

it's an ipod touch with 32GB memory, it's second hand so i don't need to worry about the warranty. If I was spending my own money I would have bought a different brand of mp3 player, but it was a gift so i gots to use it.

i like my ipod. i've had it for over 4 years now and it works perfectly for me. (i've only used it with one computer so I have no problems with sync etc)

it's an ipod touch so i wouldn't fuck with the OS no fucking way. enjoy it instead for its ability to play games, video, all sorts of shitty and/or fun apps & time wasters. calendars. reminders. alarms. $2.99 musical toys. wankery galore.

now about itunes itself, it's a horrible piece of shit because it's so dumbed down for use that its innards are, conversely, overly complicated. just so you know, all the actual files are moved to a folder called "music" and then the other folders contain various shits including the "library"-- you can have multiple libraries-- these are XML files that compile sort of meta-playlists out of the music folder (e.g. i have libraries like "CD rips" and "shitty mp3s" and "audiobooks" because the cd rips are good quality, the shitty mp3s are full of embarrassments, and when you start some random music play you don't want to suddenly hear some dude read chapter 3 of "man in the high castle"). anyway, it's atrocious but you can get the hang of it with a little research. i use itunes on mac but winamp/VLC on windows.

^^^ those podcasts are also available (for free) through the iTunes music store (search 'Brainwashed Radio podcast').

if your samsung, wont load mp3s via iTunes, you could (albeit the long way around), burn them to CD and then rip/load onto yr samsung.

your method usually works because most podcasts use mp3 sources.
this one uses m4a sources, and that file format is not being recognized by your browser.

it's probably not supported by your mp3 player either. you'll have to convert the audio format.

I'm gonna make a guess that the Brainwashed podcasts appear like empty folders because your Samsung mp3 player doesn't recognise the .m4a format that the Brainwashed podcasts are in... as opposed to the .mp3 podcasts you usually download from other websites?

Maybe space's suggestion to get them from the iTunes™ store would work, although I was under the impression that everything in said iTunes™ store was in similar gay formats like .m4a and .m4p, so that wouldn't load on your mp3 player either... but any iSlaves in the know feel free to correct me if that is not the case.


Solution: Google for a free .m4a to .mp3 converter, download the podcasts on your computer, convert them to mp3s and then load them onto your mp3 player.




T&B: if what Derek suggested about not syncing works for you then I wouldn't mess with it... especially not if it's a touch model.

it is. a mp4 converter will work, but then again, as I mentioned, so will burning the podcast to to disc.

for me, that's a lot less dodgy than finding a freeware converter.

then again, all of my devices accept mp4 (greedily).

You're the first and only one in this thread who seems to care about the coolness of your portable music player. Got some issues you'd like to share with us? What does a "cool" music player look like anyway?



it's much easier and faster and you don't need a blank disc. i wouldn't advice to download one from a chinese site or anything, but tucows and the likes aren't dodgy.

ipod won't by default play wmv (propietary windows) but it will play quicktime and h.264. and mpeg4 (mp4, m4v, etc). notice this: files need to be reduced to dimensions the ipod can handle-- too much bandwidth and it will bust-- actually, itunes will refuse to load the video because it won't play (one of the advantages of using itunes to load media into the thing).

then again, there might be some flip4mac version for ipod (flip4mac is free & lets you watch wmv on OSX), but i don't know.

however--

HANDBRAKE is a free very powerful program that will compress your DVDs or almost any video source to ipod size (or other sizes/bandwidths of your choice)-- just use the presets, they are very good and will guarantee to work with your ipod.

get vlc,

view > playlist
internet > podcasts
+ 'subscribe a podcast'

right click a episode > save as
destination file: > browse
choose a destination folder and a destination file somethingsomething.mp3
change the profile to 'audio - mp3'
check 'dump raw input'
click start and let it finish the download

yeah vlc is nice. I only use it for video playback and had no idea it would dump audio data.

it is nice. and there's an ios version that soon will be compatible with iphone/ipod touch.
t&b might want to check that since it plays wmv and pretty much everything else.

i don't use it to manage podcasts either, but it's an easy workaround for what bytor is trying to do.
