Weezer offered $10million to split

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010...d-10m-split-up

do it do it do it

As bad as Weezer '10 are, they are still better than probably 99% of the shit out there. A better petition would be to offer them $10,000,000 to write and release good songs again, like they did on the first two albums.. and not release an album every year of garbage.. I mean, Rivers writes literally 200 new songs a year; surely someone can institute some kind of quality control.

Anyway, this is just a silly publicity stunt by someone who is very jaded and probably ignorant -- they're an extremely EXTREMELY easy band to ignore. It's not hard to just, y'know, not listen to their stuff. I think the last Weezer video I even saw was Beverly Hills. It was just silly ironic pop music. They just do one thing and they are the masters at it, just stupid little pop songs, and even though they haven't released a from-front-to-back great album in, oh, 14 years (though I do find Maladroit somewhat impressive), they serve their niche with an ironic smirk and do it well.

Toilet & Bowels 10.07.2010 07:18 AM

this would be a lot better if the guy actually had the cash

You should become a lawyer, youknow.

yeah, the campaign kind of falls on it's arse there doesn't it?

noisereductions 10.07.2010 08:20 AM

stupid.

1. Weezer are not that bad. I still get MOST of their albums. And I like at least half of the songs. So whatever. That's better than plenty of far shittier bands out there. And at least they do what they want, which is at least more interesting than uh... I don't know what. I can't think of bland bands because:

2. I ignore music I don't like. How hard is that? You dn't like a song on the radio? Change the station. To paraphrase Paul Anka: "just don't listen." (*Guarantee void in TN).

chicka 10.07.2010 09:38 AM

you got to admit it's awfully funny. Never been a big fan. I enjoy a few songs from their early albums but I don't own anything by them.

not really. It's actually a rip-off the whole Uwe Boll thing anyway. It's already been done as a stupid popculture "trending topic" for 3 minutes curio.

chicka 10.07.2010 11:32 AM

Ok NR point taken. I knew nothing of Uwe Boll till I looked him up after your post. so while I still found it amusing I can see why others wouldn't given it's a copycat idea.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.07.2010 01:16 PM

I've been schooling River's ass since I was 17 and started writing better songs.

If you're sick of someone influentials output, then do it yourself, pussies.

Kegmama 10.07.2010 01:16 PM

the masses are asses. aren't there more important things to try & raise money for? and wouldn't it be easier to just not listen to the Weez?

nicfit 10.07.2010 01:36 PM

what will the guy do with the raised money if they say "no"?

GeneticKiss 10.07.2010 02:42 PM

If I were if their position, I'd split, take the money, then reform later as "Rezeew". Either that or do a reunion tour.

Seriously, are people out there so self asorbed that they believe stuff they don't like shouldn't exist? It probably is just a lame publicity stunt by some loser who wants their fifteen minutes of fame, but there are far worse bands out there than Weezer. Besides, Rivers Cuomo (if not the other members of the band) probably already has more than 10 million dollars to his name already.

Kegmama, you and L7 might feel that way, but you have to admit that for every facepalm there's more than enough laughter at their expense to make up the difference...

you mean Goat Whore.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.07.2010 03:10 PM

I like Blue Album, Pinkerton, Green Album, and even Make Believe. Their last two efforts can rot in hell though, aisde form that Pork N Beans single. Seriously, have you guys heard the latest one? It literally hurts the ears.

Derek 10.07.2010 03:20 PM

They release an album every few months now it seems.

noisereductions 10.07.2010 03:24 PM

I haven't heard the new one, but I did like The Red album.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.07.2010 03:27 PM

You also like Lil Wayne, guy.

atsonicpark 10.07.2010 03:57 PM

The Red Album was one of the worst albums ever -- ASIDE FROM "greatest man who ever lived", which is 6 minutes long and completely changes style 18 times or something. It's the weirdest Weezer song ever -- it almost sounds like them trying to do Mr. Bungle or something?! I highly reccomend listening to it, it's very ambitious, even though some of the lyrics are cringeworthy.

Weezer are just perfectly fine power pop. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone can play these songs. Just boring power chords. I'd rather see a petition to end NOFX or something, because at least they (or Fat Mike) go out of their way to shove their politics down people's throats. Weezer are harmless, and the guitarist was in Carnival Art:

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GeneticKiss 10.07.2010 04:17 PM

I think "The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived" was more inspired by Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" than anything Mr. Bungle did, but I also doubt he would've done it if Green Day hadn't done "Jesus of Suburbia".

atsonicpark 10.07.2010 04:28 PM

That's probably true. I still think it's a horrible song. But it's definitely interesting, something I can't say for any Weezer song I've heard since some of Maladroit.

Also, Green album is HORRIBLE! I know a lot of people tend to say "hmm, it's not that bad...." But I think it might be their worst (though Hash Pipe rules), and that's saying a lot. Every song sounds EXACTLY THE SAME (aside from Hash Pipe). I mean, what an amazingly horrible record -- OHHH, A GUITAR SOLO THAT FOLLOWS THE VERSE MELODY IDENTICALLY ON EVERY SINGLE SONG. I mean, and that was their 3rd album, and they've done, like, 8 or 9 now?! I mean, jesus!.. I think Maladroit was their last grasp.. like, okay, now that we're selling a billion albums a second again, let's try one more somewhat creative album (and, no, it's not THAT creative, but it's leagues more interesting than Green). It failed so that's why they've done more absolute garbage.

Anyway, even though I like a few of their songs (espcially Pinkerton........'s b-sides.. Devotion, especially!), Weezer have always been something of a joke band. Epic songs about sweaters, Happy Days "appearances", their stupid album covers, etc. For some reason, people took it all seriously and Rivers was called "the daddy of emo" (which is wrong) and "the greatest songwriter in the world" (because he can string together power chords in an uninteresting fashion?). I think they pretty much are still the same band, but their lyrics are just a little bit more embarassing. Or maybe their fans just grew up?

noisereductions 10.07.2010 07:04 PM

Green Album
Maladroit
Red Album

^those are albums I LIKE. I don't love them. But they have at least half-of an album of songs I think are good. So yeah.

viewtiful alan redux 10.07.2010 07:17 PM

Pretty sure Rivers Cuomo is a musical troll with an undeserved Bob Dylan complex

if you can honestly say that "The Good Life" or "Say It Ain't So" aren't amazingly written songs, then you may already be dead.

hevusa 10.07.2010 08:57 PM

haha, I saw someone I know who donated.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.07.2010 08:57 PM

I'd take Rivers Cuomo over Bob Dylan any day. Aside from Blonde on Blonde, I consider Dylan to be massively overrated.

I don't even know what to say to that.

....

you wanna just talk about games instead? I beat Iridion II tonight.

Skuj 10.07.2010 11:13 PM

This thread makes me want to check out Weezer.

Oh dear. There's going to be blood on the tracks over this....I can just see it now.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.07.2010 11:21 PM

It's not that he's awful. Far from it actually. He's just totally not my style.

***The Backtracking Begins***

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.07.2010 11:28 PM

Ha!

I just don't see what's so great about him. I can see how some people might like it, but Blonde on Blonde is the only album of his that I've heard, that hasn't bored me beyond tears.

Surely I can't be the only one?

Skuj 10.07.2010 11:31 PM

I love it. We successfully turned a Weezer thread into Dylan. Posrep me now, everyone. :)

Seriously though, I don't give a toss if someone dislikes Dylan.....but have you really dug into Blood On The Tracks, Highway 61, and some others?

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.08.2010 12:01 AM

No, and I honestly would never be curious enough to do so.

I'm sure he was considered groundbreaking in the 60's, but that was 30 years before I was born, and I just can't relate to his boring music. I just don't see his material holding up as well as opposed to that of his peers from the same decade, like the Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, or Strawberry Alarm Clock! Now those are some great acts!

His early shit is fucking awesome. So anti-establishment it makes my toes curl. And remember he made the beatles fucking smoke pot. That goes FAR. CRED.

This post is absolutely epic and immortal. In a certain way.
