Songs with confusing sounds.

I couldn't think of a better name, sorry.

Have any of you ever been listening to a song and thought you heard someone call your name or a faint screaming, then when you turn the music off so you can hear this noise better you realize that it's actually in the song?
Haha it's kind of hard to explain.

Every time I listen to Chinese Takeaway by the Adicts there's this sound at like 1:59 (they repeat it after too) and I ALWAYS think it's my mom calling my name.
Then in Coral Fang by the Distillers there's this scream every once in a while in the background and I always think it's my mom getting scared hahah.

Many years ago, I was listening to the first Onyx LP on my Walkman. It was the first time I'd heard it, and at one point there's a guy yells or something (I can't remember too well). For a moment I thought someone was attcking me. EMbarrassing and funny.

On Boxoctosis Alarum, by The Fall (the version on Interim), a smoke alarm goes off half way through the song and continues for some time.

Whenever I listen to Deanna by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, I have to convince myself that I don't really hear our home telephone faintly ringing in the background.

Savage Clone 07.18.2006 04:08 PM

I have a problem with phone noises and police sirens in songs.
Phone sounds are deceptive when you have the stereo up loud, and siren sounds suck to listen to while driving!

kingcoffee 07.18.2006 04:15 PM

I was listening to J Mascis + the Fog's "Where'd You Go" and I could have sworn it was someone calling my name, but very subtley and kind of blurred. Like I dodn't really know if someone was really calling out to me. There's also another song that I can't remember that drives me nuts every single time I play it because at one point it sounds like there is a police siren right outside my door. Crazy, man. Crazy

acousticrock87 07.18.2006 04:27 PM

I used to listen to System of A Down, and I swear there's someone talking in the background of Chop Suey; barely audible in the brief pauses during the chorus. It always bugged the hell outta me because I would always think someone was talking to me, then look around and find no one's there. It sounds exactly like what you hear when someone's trying to talk to you but the music is too loud.

And yes, I hate siren-like sounds when I'm driving.

There's a song I used to listen to many years ago, and at a certain point I always thought it was my mum calling me. I haven't thought about this for at least 20 years, but now it's going to drive me mad trying to think what it was. Thanks!!!

When songs - specifically Babe I'm Going to Leave You - Led Zeppelin - in which 'baby' is repeated over and over, I begin to think it says Bailee, my sisters name.

Other then that, no.

The 97th Hammer 07.19.2006 01:21 AM

"Stag Party" by the Cherubs features the sound of an off-the-hook phone throughout the song in a deliberate attempt to disorientate the listener.

freedom run - kyuss

Norma J 07.19.2006 03:12 AM

I used to hear the phone ring, pause stereo, hear no phone ringing, turn stereo back on, hear phone ringing, realise it's the high frequency of the cymbols.

Only certain bands though, or perchance one band in particular that I can't remember. Don't know.

Cantankerous 07.19.2006 06:13 AM

YES. I always hear my mom going "Lillian!" or "Hey Lilly!" and then you know, she's obviously not there. I always hear it on "I Think That I Would Die" (Hole).

touch me i'm sick 07.19.2006 08:32 AM

my bloody valentine's loveless album does that to me

Trasher02 07.19.2006 10:03 AM

there's a dino Jr. song in which i always think someone is calling my name...

LittlePuppetBoy 07.19.2006 12:13 PM

In the song Rockin' the Kasbah by the Clash, whenever that beeping noise comes on (at the end of each verse in the middle) I keep thinking that's a cell phone going off.

Danny Himself 07.19.2006 12:23 PM

Somewhere in a Sonic Youth record I too think someone is calling my name. I can't believe everyone else has so many experiences of this too.

gmku 07.19.2006 01:51 PM

In the last song on Television's Adventure, in the first minute or so, there are high-sounding cymbal noises or something that never fail to spook me. If I have the headphones on especially. They make me think a phone is ringing or an alarm is going off in the distance.

gmku 07.19.2006 01:52 PM

My dogs bark at the animal noises on the reprise of Sgt. Pepper.

gmku 07.19.2006 02:00 PM

No, i don't think so. The boys and I will have to check that out!

m^a(t)h 07.19.2006 02:06 PM

yeah its a dog whistle right before the crazy part, my cat picked it up too

finding nobody 11.16.2006 04:04 PM

He turns down by Cat Power has some soft sounds of rolling thunder that I always think are real

zedius 11.16.2006 04:33 PM

In the nirvana song "grey goose" from the box set you can faintly hear some shitty eddie rabbit song playing in the background.

Liz Phair's "Shane" has lots of good noises at the end.

"My ass is on fire" by Mr. Bungle always freaks me out when I'm driving because of the car alarms.

That happened to me the other day when I was listening to that record.

zedius 11.16.2006 05:46 PM

The perfect kiss by new order has some amazing frogs.

Rob Instigator 11.16.2006 05:53 PM

On MR BUNGLE's first album, there is a quiet of several seconds, maybe 30, and then a loud glass breaking sound. that sound used to scare the shit out of me when I would be in the far with my tape deck full blast.

porkmarras 11.16.2006 05:54 PM

Can you not just call a thread:'Drugs=what do they do to my music listening and me being happy with it'?Christ, are you that retarded?

Fuck yes! I thought this was only me. In a Pixies song, I can't recall which, there's a bit where I think my mum is calling my name. And it actually sounds like my Mum and how she sounds when calling my name. Odd.

i've had more than a scare w/ siren sounds... i can't remember what it was... melt banana?

there was also one that sounds like my radar detector, so it made me step violently on the brakes. can't remember what it is either. i only use the radar on long highway trips.

EyeballGrowth 11.16.2006 09:05 PM

Butthole Surfers - Whirling Hall Of Knives

SonikJesus 11.17.2006 01:06 AM

This happens to me a lot. I can't remeber any of the songs though. I mostly hear phone sounds.

jimbrim 11.17.2006 06:00 AM

When i was younger i listened to Idlewild a lot and in one of their tracks it sounds like my dads calling my name from downstairs, it got me everytime.

More recently ive been listening to Battles, i always think the phones ringing, it drives me crazy.

nicfit 11.17.2006 06:21 AM

^^^^
in the kingdom #19 , i suppose.

king_buzzo 11.17.2006 01:09 PM

great thread idea.

theres a creepy laugh echo in suicide solution from ozzy osbourne in the bridge of the song

sonicl 11.17.2006 03:34 PM

There's a sound like a police siren on Mono's collaboration with Worlds End Girlfriend that has me looking in my rear view mirror every time I listen to it in the car.

k-krack 11.17.2006 03:45 PM

I don't recall which song it is... it's on the BBC Peel Sessions disc, Joy Division, it breaks into this synth solo that sounds like rubber ducks, if i remember correctly, with that rotating speaker sound, left, right, left, right (panned).

atari 2600 11.17.2006 04:50 PM

The dog on Pink Floyd's Seamus is another. It's hilariously recreated on the Live at Pompeii video. I was thinking about doing a mixed cd with nothing but songs that have dog noises.

The confusion phenomenon usually happens to me when I'm listening to something with a lot of polyrhythmic percussion and yeah, lots of cymbals make me think the phone is ringing too.

Songs with police sirens can be funny if you slip them on while people are getting high.

PAULYBEE2656 11.17.2006 05:01 PM

merzbow. different volume levels omit different sounds. well so it seems. maybe ive smoked too much!

king_buzzo 11.17.2006 05:23 PM

when i play guitar i ALWAYS hear the phone ring.
