Zappa fans help me make a list please
I'm trying to get most of his heavily jazz albums. I have Hot Rats and Piquantique. I know Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo are mostly jazz. I have Imaginary Diseases. I'm aware of there being a live Wazoo album. What else?

WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH is my favorite album pretty much, and it's jazzy..

ctrl+f "jazz"; Mark pretty much makes a note of whatever album is jazzy. |
oh goo d call adam, didn't even thikn of checking with sir prindle!!!!
|
Everything Zappa did was shit. Listen to anything else. Anything. Stick your head out of your window, that'll be better for your ears.

He did do a lot of garbage, but the stuff with THE MOTHERS was incredible, as are a good handful of his solo albums. I don't see how anyone could dislike "We're Only In It For the Money". |
He falls into my personal category of musicians I don't like the idea of regardless of the odd achievement. It's the totality of Zappa's discography that I think is bad for the soul and the mind, and possibly causes cancerous lungs if exposed to it for too long.

It's shit. One day you'll realise that your relationship with him is one of self-abasement, spousal abuse and terror. I've probably listened to more Zappa than most Zappa fans. Everything he did is shit. I can think of no music that is shitter than Zappa, and I mean that quite seriously. |
I don't really think there's a lot of musicians that I could actually say "everything ________ did was shit." I mean even people I'm not into. Say Dave Matthews. I couldn't say EVERYTHING he did was shit. Most of it is shit. But there's a song here or there that I don't think is shit. I don't think it's so easy to just make blanket-statements about someone with such a gigantic discography.
|
I mean, he's definitely released more garbage than good stuff -- considering especially that he released many many albums of guitar solos, basically, and guitar solos are almost always hideous.
But he's good some cool albums. |

Honestly, if I've listened to some 30 albums of his, I do feel I can make a blanket statement about it. It's shit, without exception. |

Amen brother, spread the gospel. Hallelujah! |
Quote:
ok, perhaps the 30 albums you listened to were SHIT, but how does that prove that his other 60 albums are also shit? |

Does anyone REALLY need to listen to 90 Frank Zappa albums to decide that he's SHIT? If people who go through this sort cesarian spiritual suicide attempt exist, WHERE DO THEY LIVE? WHERE DO THEY GO? Have you even met anyone who's a genuine fan of Frank Zappa? I don't mean someone who just says they like or appreciate his work, but someone who's a real Zappa fanatic with loads of posters on their bedroom wall, someone who cracks a joke in the spirit of Zappa's (SHIT) sense of humour etc? Would you marry one of these people? Eh? I'm asking you. |
No, I actually hate his "joke" period. But let's see, well viewtiful_alan is a member here' He's a genuine fan. I'm pretty sure he's heard 30 albums he enjoys by Zappa. I have about 20 and I like most of them a lot. I'm pretty sure that while atsonicpark dislikes most of FZ's work, he'd call himself a fan of at least the first 5-10 yrs.
|
You can't be a fanatic when you only like a certain period by an artist. Would you put a picture of Frank Zappa next to your bed and wake up to it every morning?
|
WHO'S RESPONSABLE FOR THIS????
![]() AND THIS???? EH???? ![]() AND WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS EH?? YOU TELL ME. ![]() |
Quote:
oh I'm sorry you were asking if I knew any serious obsesso's? No I don't. |

there you go. |
I think the only thing in the whole of music that's shitter than Zappa is Zappa fans. Horrendous people. The sort of people who make genocide seem like a warming thought.
|
What I do like, though, is when this thread comes around about once every 6 months.
|
Frank Zappa genuinely offends me. If you'd play me one of his records while I'm in a bad mood you'd be lucky if you were still the owner of a nose after that.
|
Back to the original post... Uncle Meat is a very worthwhile listen if you are looking for some jazz influenced recordings from frank. Some "Bitches Brew" (which it pre-dates) sounding stuff creeps up on this double lp. One of my favorites.

ooooooooooh. I get it. |
there was something that really bothered me about Zappa's relationship with music. I thought, here was a man wo really did nothing to make you want to like him, who did nothing that made you want to love music. Having been forced to learn, the guy was so conflicted about his father and that strict regime that he would ...turn around and spit in the face of an art form...there was a scathing, sarcastic attitude towards music. And really the best part of music is how you get people to work, get people around you to enjoy it and how user-friendly music is to people."-John Cale

Interesting quote, GD.

There are entire genres the are irredeemably shit, e.g. happy hardcore, nu-metal, skate punk, funky house |
Quote:
I disagree. I think any genre has SOMETHING at least interesting within it. |
Quote:
That's an interesting observation you make there. One of the reasons I can't absolutely stand Frank Zappa's music is that he produced it from the point of view of someone who was uber-conscious of making ''interesting'' sounds, and in the process forgot that notes are also meant to move the listener. |
Quote:
seriously though -- you don't get ANYTHING out of "Peaches En Regalia"? |
Quote:
Never. |
but certainly you admit that that particular song is certainly filled with notes meant to move people?
|
Don't get me wrong, I do find some records to sound just interesting and I'm fine with it. With Zappa, though, it's his pervading attitude, or like I mentioned earlier, the totality of his output, be it aural or visual, that I find repulsive.
|
Quote:
and why would it take a musician 90 albums to offer so little in terms of producing music without one's massive ego in mind then? Isn't that a sign that it's not a priority for them to begin with? |
I'm not really interested in what his priorities were though. I like the sound of a lot of his music. I dislike the sound of some of it. That's really the extent of my caring.
