Flaming Lips at Del Mar

I saw the Flaming Lips! Best show I've ever been to. It replaced my dad's favorite show as well (Devo '84).

It was great. I had a blast.

god, I can't wait until Aug. 28th!

Alex's Trip 07.22.2006 11:49 AM

I hope no one complains about SY going before them because, live, they are way better.

afterthefact 07.22.2006 11:50 AM

they who? SY or FL?

Alex's Trip 07.22.2006 11:51 AM

FL are better than SY live. So FL should headline and noone should complain about it.

screamingskull 07.22.2006 12:31 PM

the flaming lips were a million times better!!!

I've a video of the lips around Priest Driven Ambulance but with Ronald (not Jonathon)......You should see that shit!!! It was still wild and fun but instead of balloons and confetti we're talking super psyche light show with everyone jumping like they're on pogo sticks......just pure power of music taking over!!

If you didn't see the Lips while they had Ronald or before (Clouds Taste and back) then I'm sorry :) That's when they REALLY ROCKED! Go find a good video and you'll be happy....Until they play Mountain Side live again you will not know the true power of the lips!

theres a video of them with ronald and steven playing mountain slide on the fearless freaks dvd, (the second disk).

it looks prett great, i kinda wish they would get back to their rock/grunge/punk/whatever kind of music sometimes, especially when they are edscribed as pop in magazines and by tv presenters!
they are not fucking POP!

No this concert was at a Horse Race Track out in a small plaza, and there were trees and fountains so it was too small for that. The stage couldn't even fit them and the bubble...

I can't complain though. The admission for the race track was 6 bucks, and you go to the concert for free with that. But even better if you are 17 and under you get in free, so the whole thing was 6 bucks for me and my dad.

The Lips and the Youth are both classic in the same way continuing to kick ass through the decades....I think the Lips first album might be from like '84....

Alex's Trip 07.22.2006 01:18 PM

Yeah...I still don't have my hands on it. I have everything from Hit to Death and on, but nothing before it.

I saw 'em at SXSW this year and they played a killer version of Warpigs!! Did they play that?

Alex's Trip 07.22.2006 01:21 PM

Really? Wow! I didn't think it'd go on for that long. I'll probably see them next time they go to LA. I hope they do Coachella next year.

I know the discography, I just don't have all of the discs yet. I think I'm gonna get In A Priest Driven Ambulance next, if I find it.

Oh it was just a guess regarding '84 so I was a couple years off but still 20 years is pretty long!

I'm sure you can find all their albums on ebay.

krastian 07.22.2006 01:53 PM

Setlist?

TheDom 07.22.2006 01:54 PM

Is Zaireeka a worthwhile experience? I'm thinking about ordering it.

And I have Transmissions From The Satellite Heart. Where should I go next?

Cantankerous 07.22.2006 01:59 PM

i am super excited for the 26th

Yeah, it is a lot of fun. I mixed all four discs onto one disc so I can listen to it whenever, but if I can get enough people I love playing them all at the same time...

If you have Transimissios, get the Soft Bulletin, or Clouds Taste Metallic.

h8kurdt 07.22.2006 02:21 PM

Just got a ticket as they've confirmed they're playing Manchester.

YEY!

nomadicfollower 07.22.2006 02:27 PM

They cover War Pigs alot, don't they? I've seen them perform on Austin City Limits and they covered that song. (maybe I shouldn't assume they cover it alot..)

I've never seen either live, but I can only imagine FL would be better live. I mean, it's awesome seeing Thurston go nuts on guitar and stuff, but it doesn't compare to huge bubbles, giant hands, bloody heads, and naked chicks :)

khchris(original) 07.22.2006 08:20 PM

I was at the show and it was a good show but...

same shit, different show.

They do put on a good show, but if you've seen them alot of times, it starts to get a little old. All the videos to their songs stay the same(atleast all the videos they had for the Soft Bulletin tour).

I love the lips and glad they got a drummer for this tour, but sometimes the videos get old.

i think the lips got most of their inspiration from cornelius shows. he was doing shows like that(and does it better than the lips) years before the lips started doing them.

Daycare Nation 07.22.2006 08:24 PM

Looks fun. I wish I liked the Flaming Lips.

nomadicfollower 07.22.2006 08:42 PM

I'd see the Lips for their stage show alone.

kingcoffee 07.22.2006 09:38 PM

Yeah, I love both Sonic Youth and Flaming Lips. They both put on spellbinding live performances, but when it really comes down to who is more interesting and entertainign all over, it's the Flaming Lips. Their shows are just so wild and colorful that it beats out anything Sonic Youth has ever done.

I still want to see him get in the bubble and roll around the crowd.

he did that like, once?

what's with the "rivalry" all of a sudden?

there are many better live bands than SY...so why make a big deal about it, unless you're just a lips fan trying to start shit on a SY board=get a life.

i've been seeing them since the early 90s and yes, the lips put on a stage show...blah, blah, blah.

but if you want to talk about live bands, cornelius kills the flaming lips(who copied his live shows anyway) live.

no "boy in the bubble" stage show can come close to what cornelius does live.

also, he incorporates his multimedia show 10 times better and far more clever than the lips.

so, you guys looking for a "rivalry", why not compare the lips to the band that they've copied...cornelius?

(silence...)

atari 2600 07.23.2006 01:47 PM

I, for one, can't stand The Flaming Lips.

porkmarras 07.23.2006 01:50 PM

I,for two,can't stand them either.
