Crisp manufacturers.

Much crisp discussion going on at the moment. But who makes the finest?

Pookie 07.27.2006 07:47 AM

I have no loyalty when it comes to crisps. My preference changes constantly. After all the crisp discussion recently, I had a craving for Nik Naks and at the earliest opportunity, I slipped out to buy some, only to discover that Sainsbury's doesn't stock them. I settled for Frazzles instead. I remember them being nicer than they were. I wasn't impressed at all.

I think I'd go for Golden Wonder because they make Nik Naks and their crisps are underrated.

However, I have yet to try Nobby's crisps. Their nuts are excellent though.

Hip Priest 07.27.2006 07:49 AM

I've always been a Golden Wonder fan, both for the true crisp and the related products such as NikNaks, although Sainsbury's own brand stuff pushes them close. Sainsbuy's own Frazzles are great, by the way.

Tokolosh 07.27.2006 07:52 AM

Pringles are the shit!
Best shape for a chip.

sonicl 07.27.2006 07:56 AM

This is a tough one. I've voted for Kettle because the search is for the superior crisp manufacturer, and they do make the best crisp, even if it is overpriced and probably classifiable as a luxury item.

For day to day use, I have little choice but to go for Walkers, as they are the most widely available, and they make Square Crisps. However, if we are going to include non-crisp snacks in the discussion (in which case the thread is mis-titled - an error I would not have expected from such a pedant as Mr Priest), then Golden Wonder start catching up again through the aforementioned NikNaks and, my favourites, Wheat Crunchies.

I would have liked to have agreed with Tokolosh, but the high monosodium glutamate content of Pringles means that they leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

Hip Priest 07.27.2006 07:57 AM

I've never been fully convinced by Pringles. Or those chocolate things that are shaped like Pringles.

Hip Priest 07.27.2006 07:58 AM

It used to be all Golden Wonder up north until I was about twelve, I think. Then bloody Walkers came in changed the colour of cheese and onion to blue. Cheese and onion always used to come in green packets.

Pookie 07.27.2006 07:58 AM

AAhh, Wheat Crunchies.

I think Pringles are overrated and overpriced.

Tokolosh 07.27.2006 08:00 AM

The others in the poll might be better than pringles, but we don't have them here except for smiths which I find tasteless.

Oh, the number of people who have had the shock of having salt and vinegar flavour fill their mouth when they expected cheese and onion. Such a terrible thing to have happen.

Iain 07.27.2006 08:04 AM

More to the point, what are Tayto? They sound like a Japanese toy manufacturer

Hip Priest 07.27.2006 08:05 AM

Tayto are a Northern Irish company who make cheap stuff, but also recently acquired part of the Golden Wonder range.

Smiths are now owned by Walkers, of course, whereas Benson's simply collapsed.

jon boy 07.27.2006 08:43 AM

so is this just crisps? or can we include niknaks and other corn based snacks? if so i fear we are opening a whole new argument. i dont eat crisps anymore, i used to love them but have gone right off. every flavour was nice and i did like the sea salt and cracked black pepper type too. never was a fan of pringles though for some reason, or dorrito's.

also, as testament to how clean my living is, i have not eaten a chocolate bar or any other choccy type thing in over 10 years.

fishmonkey 07.27.2006 08:49 AM

walkers walkers walkers, it has to be walkers, they just have the widest variety, mind you the nearly lost it for me cuz of Gary Lineker

I appreciate the distiction, but for casual purposes this poll can include crisps and all other related snacks. A seperate future poll solely for crisps, or one for maize-based snacks, and indeed one for 10p snacks (eg the mighty Space Raider) is not out of the question.

Space Raiders, in fact, hold a special place in my heart, and probably deserve a poll to themselves.

Tara Palmer-whatsername was the final straw.

jon boy 07.27.2006 08:57 AM

space raiders are good. for those people who like to strike a healthy figure then snack a jacks are always good. especially bar b q and salt and vinniger flavours. the salt ones knock yer head off.

_slavo_ 07.27.2006 09:05 AM

Where the fuck are Pringles?

By the way, look at this shit, I'm being patriotic today:

Imagine you had something like "British chips" there in UK.

i can't vote, because i'm not familiar with any of these except for smiths, but i thought i'll add two observations about uk crisps:

1. i've never understood how salt and vinegar can be (one of?) the most popular crisps flavours in the uk... to me that's really a horrible combination.

2. how many of you eat crisp sandwiches? that's even a stranger combination. i couldn't believe it the first time i saw it! :D

The only thing better than a crisp sandwich is a chip sandwich!!!

jon boy 07.27.2006 09:21 AM

chip butty! with salt and vinegar.

Toilet & Bowels 07.27.2006 09:26 AM

salt vinegar is a very natural combination, afterall, it is what one puts on fish & chips.

Trasher02 07.27.2006 09:27 AM

I eat all kinds of chips...
That's what we're talking about right? Crisps what the fuck???

jon boy 07.27.2006 09:30 AM

translation: chips are "frieten", crisps are "chips".

sandwiches with chips on them and vinegar!? eeeewww... just vinegar on chips alone even.

jon boy 07.27.2006 09:36 AM

no no no. you have it all wrong man. crisps are flavoured with salt and vinegar not added to the sandwich afterwards. and is not real vinegar.

pokkeherrie 07.27.2006 09:40 AM

yes, the salt and vinegar flavoured crisps... but i thought pookie mentioned he actually ate chips sandwiches? i've never heard of that before.

hmm, if i feel adventurous during atp i might give that a try.... actually, i think i won't.

jon boy 07.27.2006 09:44 AM

yes crisp sandwiches are nice and so are chip sandiches. two very different things entirely.

Pookie 07.27.2006 09:46 AM

Go on, you know you want it.

jon boy 07.27.2006 09:54 AM

Toilet & Bowels 07.27.2006 09:56 AM

(ah, i forgot, you have that too.)

Iain 07.27.2006 10:02 AM

Chip Butty=Chip(fries etc) sandwich. They are great. 2 different types of carbohydrate at once!

Toilet & Bowels 07.27.2006 10:05 AM

i'm in the mood egg & chips now.

porkmarras 07.27.2006 10:07 AM

A fried egg sandwich.

Savage Clone 07.27.2006 10:12 AM

i really thought you were joking there but it appears you can even have egg & chips & baked beans... with a coffee.
i don't even want to know where this could possibly end.

Toilet & Bowels 07.27.2006 10:24 AM

that isn't coffee, it's tea, surely?

anyway, you'll have to discover the revelation of chips w/salt & vinegar as prime post-booze food at ATP.

personally, i'm not fond of egg and beans together though.
