final guitar choice

ok so by new years i can get around 350 eur and buy a fender mex strat. but i can also save up to 750 euros and buy japanese jag or a jazzmaster. im wondering if the japanese jags and jazzs are any good? or should i just go for the mexican strat?

finding nobody 08.03.2006 06:22 AM

i have a mexican strat. and i love it.

i havent played jags or jazzmasters very much, but the prices you have up there are good compared to what i've seeen

king_buzzo 08.03.2006 09:02 AM

yeah man theire made in japan so thats why theire so cheap, i dont think they make them anymore

Danny Himself 08.03.2006 10:31 AM

I have an old japanese jazmaster. It's fucking great.

heavium 08.03.2006 12:42 PM

save up for a japanese jazzy, you won't regret it, and if you really don't like the pickups (lack of power...mainly) you can always replace them with some lace sensors or whatever later on.

i bought a japanese mustang ('69 reissue, lefthanded) a few months ago and absolutely love it..put some daddario 12s flatwounds on it, it sounds very nasal but i love it..hehe, it's a very 'easy-playin'' guitar but like most jap. owners i'm thinking about replacing the pickups because they can't handle distortion/fuzz too wel.

my two cents ;-)

drrrtyboots 08.03.2006 01:11 PM

And about not selling them anymore, there's this website called ishibashi that sells new jazzmasters for what converts to i think $560 new and then it's about $100 for shipping to the US, probably around the same to the netherlands. It's a bit complicated to order from a foreign country but if you just email them they explain it pretty well. They have really good customer service.

king_buzzo 08.03.2006 01:12 PM

i dont really like the jazzs pickguard and the main wing (the part that sticks out the most, where the switches are) the japanese jag has a very ugly headstock (at least the one they have at the store.) i still dont know but i need more mex strat owners to tell me how the thing is. i think ill go for a white or a sunburst strat.

Stratocasters are boring. Get a Japanese Jazzmaster, used. See mine:

That matching headstock is gorgeous danny. Did you buy that used?

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 08.03.2006 01:33 PM

i love the jazz. I hope to get one some day, lefty makes it harder to find cheap ones. What I really want is a gibson hummingbird though.

Yup. I ebayed it for £350. I had to go to the other end of the country to get it, but no bother.

And Sheriff- I am left handed. It's easier to learn right handed guitar than try to find a decent left-hander. If you insist on playing left handed though, just get a right-hander, turn it over, and string it backwards. DIY style.

I get that a lot, people saying the left hand is better for fretting, but I find I do quite well playing left handed, plus it's to late for me to switch now.

Whoops, I edited before I saw the reply. Each to their own, I guess. Sonic Life.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 08.03.2006 02:54 PM

respondig to your edit.
Thats what I did with my first guitar, fliped it over. But the knobs and switches would get in the way and make it uncomfortable. But for a guitar like a jazzmaster, I'd deal with it.

heavium 08.03.2006 07:06 PM

check out a site called guitarjapan.com or something..nice lefty stuff on there...

i live in belgium and it sure as hell wasn't easy to find a shop that would go through the hassle of importing a 'crafted in japan' fender..but hey..if fender usa would've been kind enough to make lefty RI jm, jags &stangs i would've saved up for one, finding a used one would take you forever since there's not a lot of lefty offset owners who are willing to sell ...cheapo..heh

finding nobody 08.03.2006 07:56 PM

lookin good danny.
i've got an R2-D2 sticker on the pick gaurd and a sonic youth sticker on the back.. i will have pictures one day..

HEY. That mystery Cosmos Area wasn't the one somewhere in South Dakota was it?! If it is I've been there too, and it wasn't all that strange.

Danny Himself 08.03.2006 08:09 PM

Yes. It's kinda sucky.

Пятхъдесят Шест 08.03.2006 08:10 PM

Thats crazy you've been there too though. The ball rolling up hill was weird, but other than that I don't remember a thing about it. Maybe it was hard to walk a straight line or something.

I did that thing where you can change height. That was mad. And I stood on a wall.

thansk for the link, nice prices too. Ive looked around and seen some lefty JM's for around 1500/1600, but they dont seem like a major dealer.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 08.03.2006 08:32 PM

Me too. The billboards for the Cosmos thing were really enticing. I went there eventually on the way to Mt Rushmore.

Пятхъдесят Шест 08.03.2006 08:38 PM

I'm going up to South Dakota tomorrow to go camping, not as far as the Black Hills though.
