Subcultures that don't know shit about their cultural history

Goths- most 'goths' I've met don't know anything about Bauhaus, Joy Division, Christian Death, Fields of Nephilim
Emo- How many emo kids do you know that listen to Rites of Spring?
It also gets me how much the definition of "hardcore" and "post-hardcore" has changed over the last few years.

porkmarras 08.04.2006 09:39 PM

It's because there are retards all around the world.

RdTv 08.04.2006 09:40 PM

heard.

the retard comment that is.

Savage Clone 08.04.2006 09:54 PM

Nothing is more annoying than a Gothic retard.
Seriously, just try and analyze the deeper subtexts of "Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores" with one of these people. You get NOWHERE.

i'm going to use that in real life, and claim it as my own.

porkmarras 08.04.2006 10:01 PM

Not that you'd need me to tell you that.

Toilet & Bowels 08.04.2006 10:05 PM

i don't, but i like the succintness of it.

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 10:26 PM

there's a lot of "indie" kids (does it count as a subculture?) that don't know anything except the garden state soundtrack and bright eyes. show them dinosaur jr, they don't know who it is, but mention the strokes/killers/any major label band labeled as indie by some lame mega-corp and you get "omg they're sooo indie. i looooove them. i love indie!!!". idiots.

(i'm exactly quoting a girl with that "i love indie" bit. no joke.)

Where's this meant to happen then?

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 10:29 PM

this happens a lot in suburbs where kids don't get out much/live under rocks, if i'm interpreting you right.

Step above them schizo.Tell them that you like Glitchcore or something. They probably wont know what to make of you that way.If not i've invented a few new genres that i have already posted about.

I take that back. I get people who like some hardcore music stuff. I don't know any of the names of the bands other than Nodes of Ranvier and Underoath. But when I do find people that like 'indie' music I get the 'Major Label indie' lovers.

This has happened to me before

"Modest Mouse are the kings of indie... no wait, the Killers are!"

i like doing that. i like "post math-rock tweecore" or "ambient glitch" to throw people off.

dom- oh god, the killers. i like modest mouse, though.

that's the best part of it all.

porky- haha. what are your thoughts on post-gluecore?

luxinterior 08.04.2006 10:57 PM

I just hate it when one of my close friends tells me that I "should really listen to The Sounds" (or whatever other crap band she's into at the moment) because, as she says, it sounds like something that I would listen to. She calls this "Becky music." Of course, she doesn't really know the first thing about what I actually do like. I used to try to argue with her, but now I just let her talk while I remain completely silent. Nod and smile. Best thing to do in that situation.

Other than that, very few music-related things send me into a rage.

I'm in the same boat as you for that kind of shit. People burn me something because they really don't understand why i'm into the bands that i am and think "this is different, he'll love it" and it ends up being something i've heard and don't like or something i can't even begin to understand how someone could have possibly related to my musical interests.

Our last argument ended with me saying, "Well pardon me for not wanting to go to the Warped Tour with you." Just to paint a more vivid picture.

i HATE that.like in grade seven and eight i was into punk (the good kind) and since i was a "punk" they would tihnk that i like anything that has "punk" tacked onto it, like simple plan and headly and all this complete, utter shit. people suck.

k-krack 08.04.2006 11:06 PM

and on the topic of goth/Bauhaus, i think Bela Lugosi Is Dead is one of my all-time favourite songs. wowee.

k-krack 08.04.2006 11:09 PM

oh shit, i just realized something like this happened today! this girl (im'd me) and said "listen to this song, omg i love it soooo much!!" and i kept making excuses as to why i couldn't listen to it..which she fought with every ounce of her strength. "my internet isnt working.." "ill send it then!" etc. so then i finally listened to this TERRIBLE song.... and it fucking blew. so i told her. hopefully she won't ask me to listen to anything again.

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 11:11 PM

haha, what song was it?

i made a mix for my mom with that song on it. i love it.

k-krack 08.04.2006 11:12 PM

i dont know.. some bullshit abou a lemon tree. i won;t even try to remember the name of the band.. probably something liek "we suck alot.. and we are sorry for being alive.. im an asshole and.. my music is terrible."

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 11:18 PM

lol. i think i've heard it before.

kingcoffee 08.04.2006 11:19 PM

A lot of the modern indie kids lately have no idea about the years of painstaking work that the original indie bands put in during the 80's and 90's. They're just familiar with the recent wave of indie rock ripoff's like Bright Eyes. Ugh. Makes me sick.

kingcoffee 08.04.2006 11:19 PM

And neo-hippies too. No idea about what the original hippies were about. These guys are just lazy freaks who did the fashion and don't understand how to get things done.

drrrtyboots 08.04.2006 11:24 PM

People suck!

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 11:24 PM

I think the worst bit is when, if they're someone I know and I chat to on occasion, you try and reccomend something after they reccomend something but just.. they're not interested if it's not less than five years old and on any sort of tv countdown chart.

People do suck. But for every five morons there are one or two amazing folks.

kingcoffee- I hated my history teacher I had this past year, that, when I always said I like San Francisco, he'd lead on some kids to go on about how it's a dirty hippie town and everyone's a dirty hippie. He was a really sarcastic guy and some of his crap was funny, but I never really found that too side-splitting.

schizophrenicroom 08.04.2006 11:27 PM

krastian- i was just estimating. drrrty is a lot closer.

k-krack 08.04.2006 11:28 PM

drrrty- word up

schizo- poor us.. having to listen to that crap.... and one thing that makes me really upset is when talking about bands from the nineties or soemthing with "regular folks", that is "really old, omg!" shut the fuck up asshat. a) no it isn't b) old has no impact on anything (important)
