Bands you've somehow never listened to

Don't ask me how, but somehow I've managed to get to age of 39 without EVER having listened to any Radiohead (except Creep) or My Bloody Valentine (except You Made Me Realise). I know that I should have heard them ,and there's probably an alt-rock law that makes it compulsory to know their entire repetoire inside out, but I don't.

Anyone else got any similar inexplicable omissions from their musical experience?

porkmarras 08.09.2006 07:36 AM

There's countless bands that the nme promotes week in week out that i don't bother with.Bloc Party?

Toilet & Bowels 08.09.2006 07:39 AM

i see that fucker from blockparty every where i go.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 07:41 AM

They are so exiting i cant whistle a single tune of theirs because i'm not aware of having heard any of their music. And i buy the nme.Do you want the bunch of still sealed free cds that it gives away every now and then?

sonicl 08.09.2006 07:50 AM

Yeah, but I don't mean bands you wouldn't want to listen to, I mean bands that you know are in your musical sphere of interest but you've just never actually listened to them.

Pookie 08.09.2006 07:54 AM

Radiohead for me too apart from Creep.

I've never heard anything by Cat Power. I'm sure there are loads more I'll think of.

I picked up some albums recently and I'm totally into it.

I never really listened to the dresden dolls but I'm pretty sure they suck.

Toilet & Bowels 08.09.2006 08:26 AM

i'm not sure if i've ever listened to white heaven or toho sara.
we had a thread like this recently. actually... it was more to do with not getting into rather than never hearing.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 08:32 AM

Oh here's another one:
Paul Newman(not the actor). In fact a whole bunch of bands on the Trance Syndicate label.

gmku 08.09.2006 08:53 AM

In spite or maybe because of their popularity, I never got into:

Radiohead
Wilco
Queen
Bloc Party
Pearl Jam
Grateful Dead
Pink Floyd
Cat Power

Many others...

truncated 08.09.2006 09:14 AM

I have not listened much of Blonde Redhead.

But that could be because what I have heard is, in my humble opinion, shit, due to painfully irritating vocals.

Similar situation with Mudhoney, but again, that was a voluntary decision not to pursue.

Savage Clone 08.09.2006 09:18 AM

Foodbrain
Shinki Chen
Frumious Bandersnatch

All these have been reissued and no longer cost four-figure amounts, yet I have not pursued them despite my years of curiosity and the probability of enjoyment.

Mudhoney has 2 songs I like, that's about it.
I saw them once in 1989, and was underwhelmed.
For my Stooges/MC5 derivative late 80s/early 90s acts, I'll take Thee Hypnotics.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 09:21 AM

Thee Hypnotics over Mudhoney like that!!Like that, maaannn!!!

LittlePuppetBoy 08.09.2006 09:21 AM

Husker Du
Mudhoney
Rolling Stones

All these artists I have heard a FEW songs

gmku 08.09.2006 09:25 AM

Yeah, Mudhoney never did it for me either. Nor Green River, Tad, or other SubPop late 80s-early 90s bands, aside from Nirvana. L7 was okay, though.

I'd like some Thee Hypnotics, though. I've heard praise.

I've heard (as in on the radio) but never given serious listen to the Yardbirds. I just can't get into another 60s blues-based rock guitar band, even if they were supposedly great.

gmku 08.09.2006 09:25 AM

Never heard a single thing by Bad Brains. Not sure I want to.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 09:25 AM

Does anyone like Green on Red?I used to dig them quite a bit.

sonicl 08.09.2006 09:27 AM

Dunno. I like Dream Syndicate though.

Hip Priest 08.09.2006 09:27 AM

I'm not at all familiar with Frank Zappa.

Savage Clone 08.09.2006 09:27 AM

Some of that Yardbirds stuff is really great, with killer fuzz.
Some of it is too bluesy for me, and post-Yardbirds I don't care for any of those musicians all that much, but those Yardbirds LPs are so cheap and plentiful in reissues that giving it a try wouldn't set you back that much.
Still, I know what you mean.
And I like it a little more psychedelic than that in any case.

Big takeover is one of the few songs I like by them.

May I recommend? Husker Du - Zen Arcade, Stones - Exile on Main Street & Sticky Fingers.

What album(s) do you think I'd like best?

I love Hot Rats but the rest of his catalog leaves me cold. It's all like some big prank, too jokey. There are many who love him, though.

He has a huge reputation, but I honestly can't name a single song that I know to be his.

Probably becuz he was interested more in the album than the single song. Songs off Joe's Garage might be the most well-known, but again, maybe only becuz they are mostly jokes.

Toilet & Bowels 08.09.2006 09:49 AM

mudhoney are one of my favourite bands ever, and i think mark arm is a fantastic singer, so much disgust, contempt and bile!

gmku 08.09.2006 09:51 AM

I feel weird that I don't like Mudhoney, since so many people do. It's not that I hate them, just that I never really made a connection, never really "got them." I don't know why.

At the same time, I love the Melvins. Go figure.

Toilet & Bowels 08.09.2006 09:54 AM

well it's always the case that whatever style of music you like there will always be popular and acclaimed bands within that style that do nothing for you.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 09:55 AM

They are(were more like) a good band but certainly not as good as Thee Hypnotics or even The Scientists.

Ripchord 08.09.2006 10:19 AM

Black Flag, Minor Threat, & Fugazi

All three are worth checking out, but especially Fugazi. Try Repeater, for starters.

porkmarras 08.09.2006 10:38 AM
