What is kissing someone's arse and what is a genuine compliment?

Since,it seems, there's a lot of confusion on this matter...............

alyasa 08.14.2006 07:14 AM

Confusion? Confusion is? La confusion est le sexe?

Hip Priest 08.14.2006 07:15 AM

Kissing someone's arse is when you represent their good points more than is the case, or when you wilfully ignore their failings. Or both.

jon boy 08.14.2006 07:17 AM

i think kissing ass is when you see someone doing it over and over again. its fairky obviuos after a few posts who is who.

porkmarras 08.14.2006 07:19 AM

I'm still puzzled as to how someone can kiss the arse of somebody they don't even know on the internet. But then jonboy, you are right, that sort of thing goes on.

Tokolosh 08.14.2006 07:21 AM

This ^ is kissing someone's arse and saying that I like alyasa's Damien Hirst avatar is a genuine compliment.

porkmarras 08.14.2006 07:22 AM

I dislike Hirst's art but i like alyasa. What do you make of that?

Tokolosh 08.14.2006 07:27 AM

Do you understand Damien's work or are you just trying to be different?
ps: Still think I'm a whore?

jon boy 08.14.2006 07:28 AM

profound and deeply troubling.

porkmarras 08.14.2006 07:28 AM

Do you?

_slavo_ 08.14.2006 07:29 AM

I remeber me once praising porkmarras's sense of humour and him replying that 'wrong asses are being kissed though'.
Now what do you make of that?

Tokolosh 08.14.2006 07:29 AM

I don't know what to think...

I remember that thread and that wasn't referred to you _slavo_.Apologies for the misunderstanding. But then again, the pm function is there to clarify things if need be.

Daddylikes 08.14.2006 07:36 AM

Yawn.

Don't pay this troll any attention.

alyasa 08.14.2006 07:37 AM

Why is there a whole thread dedicated to kissing asses?

No problem, pork.

pokkeherrie 08.14.2006 07:48 AM

ass-kissing is when about a third of the posts in a thread are "you must spread... before you can give it to... again".

To be honest, I thought that too... At first. But after carefully reading some of the posts that had been thusly recognized, I realise that is a valid and genuine method of giving 'props' or 'shout outs' to posts that actually, not only really matter, but provide some sort of value, whether entertainment-oriented, information-oriented or some other less-defined, abstract value. The key point to note is that it actually, really offers value. Not many posters would be inclined to acknowledge and appreciate any post in such a vocal manner, in fact, most posters don't even bother to read half of the threads here, let alone posts or even appreciating them, for that matter...

There are of course exceptions to this rule, people who; strangely enough; think that posting such a reply will give them some sort of tangible, valid and wholly real satisfaction, without actually weighing the merits of the post being commented on. These people will 'rep' a person based on their already bloated reputations, without giving due thought to any meritous considerations of the post itself... These people can usually be spotted by most people on this board easily enough... Though I would say they are uncommonly rare on this board. I might be wrong.

Ass-kissing is in the eye of the beholder.

If the beholder agrees with what is said, it is a compliment. If the beholder disagrees, it is ass-kissing.

have you seen the show at the white cube at the moment? there's a group show with a piece of work by hirst, i'm not normally a fan of his work, but this one i am amazed by.

porkmarras 08.14.2006 11:03 AM

I haven't been there in a while.I vaguely liked the paharmaceutical inspired stuff but i generally consider him to be substancially irrelevant. That restaurant in Nothing Hill was high naffness!

Iain 08.14.2006 11:05 AM

I quite like the animals in formaldehyde and wish I had actually seen them in the flesh. But I think I'd mainly be getting museum type curiosity out of it rather than liking it as a piece of art. I saw one of his things in a gallery which I thought was shit. It was a bunch of pills in a mirrored case... The big blocks of wax by Joesph Beuys in the next room were much more impressive and I had mucho fun trying to scrape a chunk of wax off while the attendant had his back turned.

Anyway, back on topic. I think a genuine compliment is when it is sincere and arse kissing is when it is with an ulterior motive.

Toilet & Bowels 08.14.2006 11:27 AM

the thing at the moment is made of amout 10 zillion flies stuck together with tar it is gruesome and sickening, but also brilliant
