I have this love-hate thing with them. But if we can't get away from them, at least we should have more like this:

I like this one becuz if validates part of my collection while challenging me to go look for other stuff.

just try to avoid those NME top 50 album ones.

I remember when that issue came out a few years ago.It made for interesting reading.

Out of the entire Can discography, they pick "Soon Over Babaluma?"
That to me is an odd choice indeed.

Well, I thought Highway 61 Revisted over Blonde on Blonde was odd, too. But it's not a perfect world. They get close though.

Highway 61 is better than Blonde On Blonde.

well that's the wire for you, in a recent best of whatevers list they picked We Will Fall by The Stooges over any of their other songs.

But that song is terrible.

But that's why we like the Wire, isn't it? Because it doesn't do what a magazine should? And they put Radiohead on the cover and, get this, actually ask them questions about music. And they talk about Derek Bailey like everyone knows him. And very often make me think very bad albums are actually quite good. And, more often than anything else, they tell me about music that I haven't heard of which actually changes something quite important in my appreciation of music. For all the cack, a world of greatness.

there was no reason for that song to be 10 minutes. maybe 5 at the most

I actually like "We Will Fall," but it's no "Down on the Street," "Loose," or "Gimme Danger."

i dont skip either "we will fall" or "l.a. blues" when listening to the album

There's nothing wrong with Fun House, or anything on it for that matter.

Down on the Street is their best song, I believe.

i got tired of reading it last year and haven't bought it in ages, the people who write for it are all too old & serious if you ask me, and it's so po faced.

the smegma issue was quite informative.

i do agree on the seriousness of it all, it makes it all seem very academic.

yeah, but it's not academic, so i don't know why it tries to be. or even why it would want to be seen as being academic. it's like wanting to be boring and out of touch.

more like arrogant and boring...you can't really say they are behind the times with the stuff they cover, although they have the tendency to dwell in the past, but it's definitely not like nme or even spin.

and yeah, trying to scholarize stuff like john wiese and wolf eyes is dumb and pointless.

I went through a similar phase but i never missed an issue for the past 12 years.I miss NME's point entirely but i have been buying it since i was a kid.It's my dough and i do what i like with it.The Wire,like it or not,is the best and most informative music magazine out there that isn't printed on some cheap A4 sheets of paper.And,damn it!!!!,the free cds that they give away,you do actually feel like listening to them.

Exactly, and some of the best records I've bought have been as aresult of hearing tracks by bands on those CD's.

I'm with T&B on this. I had a subscription to The Wire for about four years, but I found I just wasn't enjoying reading it any more so I cancelled it. Even bands that I love, the coverage wasn't really inspiring me. The only bit I was interested in was the reviews, and even then only sporadically. I still have a flick through it each month, but I only buy about one issue in three these days.

I just ordered a Dub Trio CD based on hearing a track on the last free Wire CD.

i'm not saying i haven't learned anything from reading the wire, but there are other ways to find out about music too

I make album lists. I have a top 100 list. I'm a nerd.

I have no "top lists," because they depend entirely on mood and the type of musical mindset/phase I am in, and change with those tides.
Of course I have alltime favorites, but that list keeps expanding.

i like a lot of music equally, so it would be nonsensical for me to try to make such a list.

Yeah, mine's more a nonlinear top 100 list. The numbers are meaningless; they're not rankings so much as they are a reference indicator. But creating a nonlinear list in a linear format is next to impossible, so it ends up looking a ranked list. Whatever. It's a great way to waste some time, and since the list includes cover art, it's a great way to look at my favorite albums when I'm away from my collection at work.

Erm....tell me something new.Of course there are other ways to find out about music.

i didn't mean it like you lot didn't know that, just that of the choices available, there are others i prefer to the wire.
