i hate it when punk fans who've started to branch out start tagging things as being punk that aren't punk. it comes across like they are saying that soandso is worthy of being bestowed the title of punk.

"buddy bolden was the first punk because he blablabla..."

Everyneurotic 08.21.2006 11:11 AM

the first punk song is dance dance by fall out boy.

porkmarras 08.21.2006 11:14 AM

Everyneurotic 08.21.2006 11:15 AM

...i'm just a square going nowhere.

Toilet & Bowels 08.21.2006 11:17 AM

porkmarras 08.21.2006 12:16 PM

The first belch let out by a caveman was also the first example of something that sounds like punk.

DemonBox 08.21.2006 12:16 PM

"In the hall of the mountain king" by Edvard Grieg. The working title was "The first punkrock song"

atari 2600 08.21.2006 12:57 PM

The Kingsmen covering Richard Berry...

Louie, Louie

In acknowledgement, it's been covered by too many punk bands to count.

Who cares?

Why do we need to debate this over and over?

Things like this are what made me stop reading other "punk" forums.

Misery guts.

Wow, I was the last poster in this thread from 4 years ago until someone dragged it out of the mud...

I guess everyone agreed with me.

If ya want to get technical about it, whoever first picked up a guitar and expressed themselves w/ it in such a way that wasn't aimed at pleasing an audience.

I think that can be used to describe countless blues musicians and many a peeps that came after.

W/ that said, the Stooges will always be the first real "punk band" as far as I'm concerned. That first Stooges record came out the same week as Woodstock. Shit really says something. "Punk", as a movement, def. seemed to have taken shape right after the Stooges broke up.

For me, "Strychnine" by the Sonics. Can't think of anything that punk before, or any more after.

surely gene vincent or something fron the very early days of the electric guitar rawwk thing.. yknow the kind of shit that scared the parents of your parents! the kind of shit that caused kids to scream and yell and cause riots... surely thats punk! so bill hailey and gene vincent and numerous others....... punk doesnt need harsh distortion, punk doesnt need a spikey haircut, punk doesnt need a fuzztone bassline, punk needs an attitude and the youth cultre willing to rebel against their peers... thats punk!
