Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover The Diamond Sea
Im not really a big fan of this band anyway but I do want to check out this cover. Its only on i-tunes right now but it will eventually leak over to other file sharing networks.
From Pitchfork: Unclear whose star's hitching whose wagon here: SY and YYY have been parading around like tabloid inamoratas lately, making out at stoplights, sharing milkshakes, co-headlining pool parties. Now they're fucking with covers. Bad idea if you ask me-- New York torch-passings mostly end in fire. Smartly, the Yeahs take the humble route, opting for lame strums and letting Karen O coo the chowder-thick guitar hook. She blows Thurston Moore's original vocal wide open, picking up on the song's discreet marching quality without drowning it in lugubriousness. A late, great boys-only bridge coaxes Endless Summer vibes from Nick Zinner's reverb-soused amp, with brushed snare scratches providing the obvious wave metaphor. I still prefer the Youth's quarter-hour wash cycle, but at least, as iTunes Music Store user Insane Harry Potter Fan!!! puts it, this take is "good to study to." |
i want to puke but since that's a horrible song, fair enough. i wonder if they could have possibly rendered it any more boring than it was previously, because even the osmonds would do a better job. i assume. i'm not going to listen to it.
|
I think it's a bad idea. Leave it at Thurston's vocals. I'm not too big on covers, but Flaming lips did a good job on unmade bed
|
Who's got my download? I don't think it'll be as good as Beck's rendition of arguably the best Sonic Youth song.
|
I was never able to find the Beck version, AB.
I listened to the itunes sample. I don't think it is bad. |
i can only imagine that steaming pile of crap.
i bet it's going to sound like venom attempting to cover battles, minus the cool sloppy mess and black makeup factors. actually, i bet it's going to sound like when muse tried to cover "dracula mountain" by lightning bolt |
How about listening to it first? It's great.
|
It was alright. She didn't do anything drastic to the vocals, so I don't know what that article was on about.
I felt strangely compelled to listen to some live Diamond Sea afterwards, though, because it just goes better with noise. |
It's interesting. I like it. Probably just because i love The Diamnd Sea.
|
hey, I never knew Beck had covered Diamond Sea too. Would appreciate it if anyone could share it.
I did already find this link: http://www.whiskeyclone.net/ghost/so....php?songID=79 |
i don't see them taking a groundbreaking approach to that song, really. actually, i don't see this being any better than karen o's stupid fucking haircut. bad haircut's aside, covering this song is a pretty daunting task, especially since the meat of it is so characteristically sonic youth, extra especially since the yeah yeah yeahs are obviously still struggling to find their own voice/sound.
i'm really surprised that the reviewer didn't just talk about undoing his shoelaces and making cream of wheat for breakfast, since that's what most pitchfork reviews are like. |
Groundbreaking is overrated.

so is saying that things are overrated. |
Not really. Nobody really rates those statements. My point is that the Yeah yeah yeah's cover has soul. Soul goes a lot further than just "breaking ground".
Ask Cat Power. She isn't really ground breaking in any sense of the word, but her music is soulful. That soul is moving. |
if you say so. i'll keep my opinion and you can keep yours. i still don't think the yeah yeah yeahs are bringing anything interesting to the song. and when i think "soul", karen o's whine is not what comes to mind.
cat power's voice has soul and it comes through in her lyrics. karen o? not so much, i don't think. |
stupid argument, the fact that you like cat power doesn't make it any better or worse than other artists, she's just not doing anything new and that's a fact, she's pretty meangless for that.
and that yyy cover sucks ass, it's one of the lamest attempts at gaining bogus indie cred by a bunch of fashion concious poseurs. it's embarrassing for me to listen to. |
Everyneurotic, you're an idiot. I hope you realise this one day and kill yourself.
No wonder I hate wetbacks. |

I don't know anything much about the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. I never tried to listen to their music much. I did listen to this cover, however, and soul permeates the cover. |

That's just Pitchfork pulling stuff out of their ass. Yeah, really. Needed noise. |

And you're embarrassing for me to read. I thought I'd left high school behind a while ago. |
