My Bloody Valentine
and 'shoegaze' in general (if you consider that a genre)
Who loves 'em? What other shoegaze bands should I be listening to? I have really been digging MBV and need to find more music like it. |
My Bloody Valentine are kicking my ass
|
Oh bless!Another thread about this band and genre.Search function?EH???EH????
|
I was gonna put that, but decided against it...
|
What do you care Pork, starting so many pointless polls and such...
|
Ah, what's the harm. There is infinite room in cyber space!!! And it is ours for the taking!!!

I'm not as popular as you...:(

To make this more than just an average MBV thread. whats the best live bootleg youve got from them ? I got this one from Vancouver in 1992 on the Loveless tour and its fucking amazing with an 18 minute long "you made me realise" with a huge ass noise section in it. It was recorded straight from the soundboard too so i can hear it pretty well.

ride's early albums for one

I'm a shoegazing fan, My Bloody Valentine is my second favorite band (first is Sonic Youth, of course). You should listen to Slowdive, they're really amazing, my favorite shoegaze band except MBV ; their Souvlaki album is absolutely fantastic. Chapterhouse are really good too, Ride or Boo Radleys also. |
this is a "genre" where the good albums and bands are so well defined you only need to google shoegazer and get the list of loveless, souvlaki, nowhere, etc.
let's make it interesting; how much does shoegazer "revivalists" like m83 and serena maneesh suck in comparison of the originals? |
a lot

shoegazer as a genre was stupid. my bloody valentine remain one of my favourite bands, and loveless will always be near the top of my playlist. the other shoegazer bands however, were crap copycats who aped MBV's aesthetics and style, whilst creating music that was infinitely more dull. The 'revivalists' in my mind are far more interesting, as they aknowledge MBV's basic format (catchy tunes hidden beneath layered, intense instrumentation) without shamelessly imitating it.
|
In that revival I love Amusement Parks on Fire, M83 and Daydream Nation the most (even if I think M83 isn't shoegaze that much)
|
amusement parks on fire are good, but they seem more like a foo fighters kind band, except with more sheen on the guitars than the more distorted ff sound.
let's open a can of worms: are the jesus and mary chain, spacemen 3 or loop shoegazer? |
amusement parks on fire are wicked! their new stuff is shows far less shoegazer stylings, but the earlier work, and especially early live shows which i saw were amazingly intense, deafeningly loud and layered, with swathes of noise. really quality. recently their live shows have been far more laid back, and nowhere near as loud. i still rate them tho. good on em for bringing respect to the nottingham music scene!
|
Yeah, their last album is very good too but less shoegazer ; even if it has always some caracteristics of the style. The band is finding his sound
|
I love JAMC and MBV, but generally not the rest of the genre from what I've heard. I do not pursue shoegazer bands, so I would say I dislike it.
|
MBV is my favorite Shoegaze band.
I also like Lush, and Slowdive. Loop is considered to be a Shoegaze band, but Spacemen 3 are not, they're labeled as Space Rock. |

MBV are amazing. Except every time I've mentioned them to some random person, they expect them to be an "emo" band, based on the name.
|
i used to really not like them but now i love them for some reason.
|
you're in love, catankey (argh) ,that's why you like them now.possibly maybe.
|
I like MBV. Only got Loveless yet, but I think it's awsome. You should check out Serena Maneesh if you are in search for more shoegaze, nobody have metioned them, but they are really good. Check em' out: http://www.serena-maneesh.com/news.php

i can't who is more awful, serena maneesh or m83? right now, my money is in m83, those guys (guy?) are the most boring music without it being new age, i mean, kenny g can kick their asses. |
You dont like Serena Maneesh? Well, you should have seen them live, I'm sure you would have a different opinion.
|
m83 were far better before the newest album came out, that was a bit crap. still, dead cities red seas and whatever it was called was an astounding album, and run into flowers a fantastic song.
|
wow i had never heard anyone compare m83 to mbv. that doesn't even make sense because they are so different and MBV is so much greater. i prefer loveless to isn't anything because it gives a certain flow to the music when you can't understand what they are saying
|
actually in a way i think giant drag are a poppish version of MBV, and this sentence marks the start of my rep's fall.
edit:i do love MBV,but i do not listen to tham that much, this is the reason why i never got into the "shoegaze" genre, but loveless is a great album, and actually isn't anything could be my fav,it "sounds" better in my ears/brain. |
i like them
|
Quote:
does that not make the term "shoegazer" semi-innappropriate. i know "shoegazer as a genre for sound, but i think to a certain degree the band should have stage-fright. |
It's too bad MBV broke up. They were one of my favorite bands for a time. (Still are, really). They had such a great, unique sound. Soft, melodic pop surrounded by droning noise and feedback. Utter genius.
|
Quote:
Umm. Technically they haven't broken up. They just haven't done anything. |
Does that mean k-krack, that every band that you put in the shoegazer-category should suck live? Well okay then, if that does not make Serena Maneesh a "proper" shoegaze band, I really don't care. What matters to me is that they put on a great fucking show live.

It was a joke. Get it? Shoe gaze? Like they stare at their shoes and are real nervous. |
Quote:
Haha, yeah, I got it. |
the swirlies are fucking awesome.
|
ENDLESS thread with four bands that are being mentioned all the time; mbv, slowdive, ride & swirlies. Sure, they are classic shoegaze, but catherine wheel (fermant!!!) and kitchens of distinction (death of cool!!!) are equally great. Then: pale saints, ar kane, th' faith healers, telescopes, lilys, cranes, curve, ect.
