Magic Numbers/SONIC YOUTH/Ween/Flaming Lips in Allentown, PA
Just got back from this phenomenal show. Sonic Youth's setlist was toooo fuckin short though and with no encore!!
SETLIST (I think in correct order) Teenage Riot Reena Incinerate Mote Rapture? What a Waste Schizophrenia Turquoise Boy Candle Jams Run Free Pink Steam I don't think I've left anything out? Some nice guitar shenanigans between Lee and Thurston at the end of "Teenage Riot." The always adorable Kim pranced around like a dork on several occasions. There were some audio problems for a good portion of their set, and vocals were rather low. :( If you ask me $50 to see all four of those acts was a loss on their part. I would have gladly payed more. I got some decent pics (especially of Lee and Kim) as well. |
How were Ween and the Flaming Lips?
|
I'll be perfectly honest and say I've been pretty unfamiliar with The Lips, and completely clueless about Ween, up until tonight. We didn't even stay for all of Flaming Lips which made me a bit unhappy, but the girl I was with insisted we bail out early.
Anywho, coming from a non-fan standpoint I will say that I absolutely loved both acts. Ween were ridiculous (his voice was out of this fucking world), and Flaming Lips (I saw about 5 songs) were completely fantastic as well. The Lips act was also pretty damn funny as well. Wonderful evening all around. The "Rather Ripped" stuff, especially 'Pink Steam', even sounded great. I would have easily traded 'Reena' and 'Rapture?' for 'Shaking Hell' and 'Silver Rocket' however. |
I wish Ween would have played with SY here. I would have made a point of going.
|
Ok good.....I didn't miss anything. I was hoping they didn't play anything that would haunt me to my grave for not going to this show.
|
I just remembered. They did play 'Cross the Breeze and Green Light as well.
Kidding of course ;) |

you missed the best live versions of "reena" and "what a waste" i've heard yet, though. and patrick will tell you the same for "teenage riot", although i still think the 15-odd minute one they did in milwaukee '04 was best. and not only does mark have mustard on his amp, it's been joined by steak sauce and a domino's sugar box. shenanigans! |
Eh, I wasn't too crazy about Reena. I'll agree with you about What A Waste though! That one was great and I don't even like the album version of that song. Jams Run Free and Incinerate sounded awesome too.

I saw Magic Numbers Sonic Youth Ween Flaming Lips last night in Allentown.
Great show. Sonic Youth played really great. They played a bunch of nuggets Teenage Riot Mote Candle Really a great show. Lots of feedback More than previous years. Flaming Lips were great. Did not really groove too much on Ween (genius harry potter rock) |
Haha the girl I was with absolutely HATED Ween, jonesroad. She just kept turning to me with this look of complete disappointment and disgust on her face. I really enjoyed them for most of the act, but got a bit bored towards the end of their set. The last song they played was just fucking stupid, but I guess that was supposed to be the point. Not to mention there were too many obnoxious Ween fans in attendance.

damn i wish i saw that. i was gonna go on a spree of travelling: dino jr., so yo concert in PA, then footbag competition. all fell thru due to a ride:(....:fuckyou:...im sorry for that

Tell all your bitchy girlfriends they can piss up a rope.
|
Yeah girls do fucking suck. I guess that's why I'm gay. The lesbian couple behind us was awesome tho. I wish I had been there with them instead. The chick I brought is basically one of the very few people that I personally know whose musical tastes are even remotely adventurous.

^Nice to see another fag round these thar parts.

Ditto man. PS fag is an ugly word :) |
Yeah, but I mean it with love.
|
I love the word fag.
|
And the word fag loves you in equal doses.
And love, Krastian? We just met for goodness sake. What's with the gays and their extreme and rushed emotions anyway? ;) |
Oh, thanks.

^Ha ha.

I beg to differ. I'm emotionless and cold-hearted, but am not psychotic. :)

Agreed that their set was way too short. It's a sad, sad world when SY gets trumped by fucking WEEN for chrisssakes!
Almost a religious experience for me - SY with the sun setting in the background, a series of planes flying overhead. I waited 14 years to see them (now age 27, started listening to them at 13). Makes me choked up to think about the show. Weird me. What's up w/ the 13 year old Flaming Lips fans? No one was really into SY at this show (except a handful of us), but it made it feel that much more special. Quiet crowd. Your set list is correct. RR songs take on a whole new persona when experienced live. I could watch Thurston create feedback for hours. I adore that man. Thank you, SY. |
I agree. I did enjoy Ween a lot, but could have easily done without them and the Magic Numbers. Then at least SY would have had a much longer set, and I would have gotten to see all of the Lips.
As far as the 13 year old Lips fans are concerned, I would have been more surprised if there had been a bunch of 13 year old SY fans. I like the Lips but I don't get why people say that SY are pretentious when Lips seem to be much more so. Their stage show might be entertaining but it's also rather cheesy and trite. Give me SY, or any band for that matter, on stage with their instruments, rocking out. I don't really need some lavish, fruity stage show to keep me entertained. I also got annoyed when the crowd went wild every time the arrogant Lips frontman pranced his ass out onto the stage between the other acts' sets. I don't get what the fuss was about. It's not like he was turning water into wine for us. Maybe it would have been better if it had JUST been SY after all. lol (from all of my above comments I really sound like a whiny bitch :)) |

I guess I need to go to a show where SY is headlining to find an enthusiastic crowd. Le sigh. |
It was my first SY show. It was amazing.
I got there early and was really close to the stage. The Flaming Lips were really good too. Ween bored me. The Magic Numbers were good it was the perfect time of day for them to play. |
