Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I read the book by Philip K. Dick many years ago and watched Blade Runner for the 100th time, last night.
It's one of my top three science fiction novels and the best Tech Noir film I've ever seen.
To me, it's Ridley Scott's best film to date. His depiction of the book is spot on, and the mood he captured, was astounding.
I also love the soundtrack by Vangelis.
This thread is dedicated to Philip K. Dick and his 44 books that are currently in print.

Do any of you guys have any recommendations, as to what I should read next?

wait for people or look for the philip k dick thread they started a while back on that movie A Scanner Darkly.

In my opinion you should start on:

Time Out of Joint, The Man in the High Castle, Martian Time Slip, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Counter Clock World, Ubik, A Scanner Darkly and VALIS.

Tokolosh 09.13.2006 04:23 AM

Thanks Iain. You've given me 8 options. Are they in order, as in your favorites?

whorefrost 09.13.2006 05:27 AM

VALIS is awesome, one of the best books ever.

No, they are in chronological order. I think my favourites are Man in the High Castle, Valis and 3 Stigmata....

Tokolosh 09.13.2006 10:42 AM

Iain. Do you like William Gibson's writings?
I've read Neuromancer and Burning Chrome.
Still have to read Mona Lisa Overdrive though.

I wonder if SY Nurse song has anything to do with this book?

sorry to disrupt the party with my nerdy ways but wasn't androids just a short story? deckard wants to buy a sheep for his greedy wife so she can keep up with the neighbors. i read it it was ok but not very "colorful" in detail like the blade runner. riddley scott's movie only inspired itself in it and added a ton of stuff-- like the whole plot for instance. the expiration date & what not. and a ton of characters & situations. yes it was awesome, i love that movie, but it had little to do w/ dick's story, except for the character deckard & (vaguely) his line of business.

Tickerwelly 09.13.2006 01:53 PM

Androids was a novel and it was a lot different than the movie.

I read Ubik last night and enjoyed the hell out of it. Lately I've been having a hard time losing myself in a good book but that did the trick.

!@#$%! 09.13.2006 01:54 PM

more of a novella maybe? not very long. i remember reading it pretty quick.
---
or maybe i got an incomplete book, ha ha.

Tickerwelly 09.13.2006 02:01 PM

I think it's over 200 pages. Everything I've read from have been pretty quick reads. I think his use of amphetamines give his books a smooth language that just breezes right through.

!@#$%! 09.13.2006 02:40 PM

i am pretty sure now that i haven't read this book. it was something else-- did he ever write a short story that ended turning into the novel? (i wonder)
my brain is behaving strangely these days.

LittlePuppetBoy 09.13.2006 02:48 PM

I've read it. It's quite good.

Tokolosh 09.13.2006 02:48 PM

The plot and characters are different, but to me Harrison Ford was the same character as Rick Deckard, in the book. It felt like I was in the same world, with the same mood and apocalyptic look at the future, as described by Philip K. Dick.
Besides, a successful adaptation is almost always going to result in something very different than the source material. There are stories that won't work on the screen, when taken literally from a book.

!@#$%! 09.13.2006 02:52 PM

no no yes you are right the stuff i read oh i dont know i am in a prarallel universe i think. there are holes in my memory dark like midnight swamps.

it's been going on for a few days now. my brain chemistry is undergoing some tecnonic plate shift.

umjammer atomsk 09.13.2006 02:56 PM

I read the book in a day and loved it. I haven't seen the movie though.

They have all of William Gibson's at my local library, I'm going to check a few out pretty soon. I wish they had PKD stuff...

dazedcola 09.13.2006 03:00 PM

did anybody see that other movie he did recently "a scanne darkly" ? I thought it was done really well. It had an interesting plot and trippy graphics although it did have an abrupt ending that kind of threw me off.

fugazifan 09.13.2006 03:36 PM

i read the man in the high castle and loved it. im about to start Radio Free Albemuth. is that one any good?

blots 09.13.2006 05:55 PM

I think you should read VALIS before Radio Free Albemuth. It is very good, but is an alternate version of VALIS. Radio Free Albemuth stands up very well as its own and separate entity...I actually read them back to back. But I think that reading VALIS cold and going straight into it is more important.

In regards to the movie Blade Runner and the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I thought the difference between the two was almost as drastic as the difference between VALIS and Radio Free Albemuth... Like an alternate universe. Even his character...he was much more pathetic in the book. That didn't bother me, I liked that they were separate. That was just my experience anyway.

fugazifan 09.13.2006 06:23 PM

thanks, i already bought albemuth so i might as well read it (first i have to finish The Air Conditioned Nightmare. but valis and a scanner darlky are next on my pkd list

The movie was made very well. I was impressed. It was more loyal to the novel than Blade Runner was.

whorefrost 09.14.2006 08:05 AM

agreed, Scanner Darkly the film was suprisingly brilliant

I would think so, since the Sprawl was based off Neuromancer, no?

Anyway, I haven't read any PK Dick novels. I am currently reading Neuromancer. I will look into "Do Androids...?" The name is intriguing.
