When I prepare to get on this forum's stage I put on my forum costume and get into character like a good actor. It's easy, trust me. But yeah, I was being sincere with that compliment. |

Ramones are not boring! Dinosaur is. You bow to prince? He's a great guitar player but...maybe I havent heard enough of his songs..or maybe it's because I'm not into much 80s as I am more into 90s and 50s/60s/70s. |
Quote:
ramones is repetitive dinosaur is boring she's going to love prince regardless of what you say. i never got the love for prince but eh, the ladies seem to adore him. learn his pimpin' ways. |

of course the compliment was sincere and well-deserved. i just thought that melly's answer deflated the premise in the most amazing way. but since you ask sincerely, very well: spike jonze todd haynes michel gondry stanley brakhage the breeders hitchcock kurdt lee hazlewood ian svenonius richard prince jim o'rourke all the beat poets lydia lunch steve albini lol lol lol henry rollins watt LENI RIEFENSTAHL SAVAGE CLONE'S BOOTS SATAN |

every Ramones album I've heard essentially sounds the same. They aren't bad but I've never been that impressed by any of their releases. Boring might not be the right word though. and Johnny Rotten has been involved in much better projects.. it might be overrated, but never mind the bollocks is a very important album to me. It has nothing on those first two PIL records though. ;) |

the word is "repetitive" |
yes
it is |
i know, right? i still like them though. the one single tune they form i my mind. ok maybe two, one with the tempo of sheena is a punk rocker and the other with the tempo of blitzkrieg bop. the rest fits in those clouds i think. maybe.
still, i like their 2 tempos. |

Quote:
i think that's a bit of stretch, there's huge amounts of often awesome music there, but i doubt anyone who doesn't enjoy any songs on Around The World In A Day for example will ever end up being really into prince |
Quote:
Who said I didn't like the Ramones? They were my first official favorite band! Sure, they've made some lousy records, or at least a few songs that are skip-worthy, but they're one of the defining bands of my life-time, and along with Iggy and Black Flag, helped get me into punk it the first place. I guess I just didn't think of them. |
Actually...,
every one should have an influence from Sonic Youth and adore their music. |
steve reich. etc.

A reply and request
Okay, I'm new here, and I have a few that have been mentioned, a few that haven't:
Throbbing Gristle Coil Velvet Underground (esp. "Sister Ray") No Wave artists that are a given, such as Mars and DNA Butthole Surfers and, occasionally, as insane as: Nurse with Wound my point in replying is to ask, as a newbie, not for bands that influenced them (such as bands that they cover, like the Ramones (gods when they played live in the 70s--after that, forget it), or for bands that were similar in philosophy and used some noise in their music but sounded very different, such as Big Black and Dinosaur Jr., but rather to request something different. You see, I'm looking for other bands, most likely from the 90s or the last decade, who sound as close to Sonic Youth as possible. I know little of recent music. Help out? |
Quote:
You want bands that are influenced by them? Pretty much every indie band. But you'll see more specific influences in these fine and totally obvious choices: Deerhunter Liars Blonde Redhead Deerhoof Be your own Pet Black Dice ...trail of dead Polvo Tortoise Surfer Blood |
Trumans Water

Awesome! Thanks! Btw, I bounced off of your original post on Kim in the forum "What do you like about Kim" because you had already pointed out the basics of everything I love about her. All I did was expound on what you said. But I suppose, since I'm new, that the moderator hasn't approved my post. Anyway, imo, you are completely right about her being essential to SY. If she left, Then Thurston, Lee, Steve (assuming he was still there) and whoever else they chose could still make great music, but it wouldn't be SY. They should change the name of the band if that happens. |
