Aside a few random songs, I've only heard Dronevil, but not as it is meant to be played. I bet they're an insane live experience.

the only thing ive got is their split with merzbow, "sun baked snow cave". its an amazing hour long track, developing from subtle plucked acoustic guitar to dense washes of searing static, then back down again to subtle atmospherics. its really cool, but i dont know how well it represents their work. recommended.

Pink....Absolutego

Worst Japanese band I've ever seen live. They just played pink straight through, the sound was bad for the venue and the girl although she rocked, had no stage presence. That said, I have enjoyed almost all of the probably 10+ albums I have of their immensly with a few exception(drone sometimes bores me a little). Pink is a great and obvious point to start with.

Anyone care to give an opinion on "Rainbow" (The Boris/Michio Kurihara CD, not the kids' TV programme or the Ritchie Blackmore band)?

I would say Amplifier Worship is a must if want the best of their more drone-y shit.

Akuma No Uta is a pretty good "sampler" of their many styles.

And Pink brings the rock.

This is wild somebody just recommended Boris's Pink for me the other day and I've been enjoying it.

Amplifier Worship is just a totally perfect record if you have taste for the heavy wierdness that would be the melvins.. if you have taste for the dark avant check out the collab disc with Haino.. Feedbacker is an amazing track and.. Flood is incredible unique. I have been too charged on some of the straighter releases like Heavy Rocks or Pink.. not bad mind you just not totally epic like some of those other releases...

the disc with Kurihara i thought is really fantastic and unique some ear splitting solos on that disc and the trax with wata's vocals is super sweet.

i wont hear a bad word said against boris.

may i say that pink, but the southern lord vinyl version with the extended versions. the normal one is a bit boring.

The only thing I own by boris is their split with Tomsk 7, it's really good, they have the most amazing bass sound. I might have to see them when they support Isis :)

I find Rainbow much better than Pink actually. Fully agree what's been said about the ear splitting solos and the track with the Wata vocals. It's probably my favourite collaboration thingy of them.

Don't agree with whoever said they are a terrible live band, but then again they didn't just play Pink at the times I've seen them. They'll be back rocking Europe next month, although sadly it seems a lot of their shows will be either at festivals or as a support act for Isis:

Is it really that bad?

The way it's built doesn't really make it a good music venue, in my opinion. There are too many areas with poor lines of sight and poor acoustics, and the sound from the bar area carries forward very badly. Although I suppose that shouldn't really be a problem for a band like Boris.

I havent heard much by Boris, but i do own the record they did with SunnO))), and i think it's great.
Shall i buy 'Pink' to start of with?

Pink is great.

Hmmmm, I would probably count Boris as one of the very best Japanese bands I've ever seen live. When I saw them they were in freaked out amps at 11 drone mode though. None of that silly Pink stuff.

Anyhow,

'akuma no uta' and 'pink' are really great for the rockin' stuff (although 'pink almost ventures into shoegaze territory at times).
soundtrack for film 'mabuta no ura' and 'rainbow' (with michio kurihara of ghost) are probably my favorite releases by them.

they're all good, it just depends on where you want to start from.
