That reference will be lost on 97% of the people here, my man.

porkmarras 10.05.2006 03:09 PM

You should have pmed the reference to the remaining 3% then.hehe

Savage Clone 10.05.2006 03:12 PM

Everybody else who is old enough to get this joke is from Europe, and hopefully were not watching American TV in the late 70s/early 80s.

Against_The_Grain would get it, but he is not on all that often.

gmku 10.05.2006 03:16 PM

What are they teaching kids in school, anyway? This is Mel's Diner we're talking about, for God's sake, a cornerstone of American popular culture! No wonder China and Japan have the competitive edge on us these days.

porkmarras 10.05.2006 03:17 PM

I used to love that program as a kid.

Savage Clone 10.05.2006 03:19 PM

I watched it with my parents.

I also watched Kung Fu with them.

In retrospect, Kung Fu was much cooler.

porkmarras 10.05.2006 03:20 PM

Did anyone ever watched The Jeffersons? My,i miss that sooooo much!

porkmarras 10.05.2006 03:22 PM

She's Lenny Kravitz's mum,you know?

gmku 10.05.2006 03:32 PM

^ HA! Classic....

gmku 10.05.2006 03:35 PM

Funny story... (maybe). For a while in college, I dated a very nice woman who just so happened to be black. We were pretty "serious," actually, so I invited her to my parents' house for dinner one night over winter break. My dad turned on The Jeffersons', and to my great embarrassment, and I'm sure to my friend's, we sat through this stupid show while my dad laughed at the pathetic stereotype humor. God, I was uncomfortable. I've never forgiven him for that.

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 03:39 PM

just a word of advice... don't rip off my schtick. that schtick is MINE.

Well, it wasn't reality. I always thought it was racist because the characters were "types," they certainly were not noble or sophisticated, and the show "dumbed down" race problems, gave it a comic gloss that ignored the terrible state things were really in at that time.

Yeah but their upstairs neighbours(Helen and Bill, remember?) were a happy mixed race couple and,c'mon,Mrs Jeffersons was the sophisticated lady and a good caracheter.Oh,Florence was my favourite, haha!

Mr Jefferson:'Florence, your cooking tastes like dog food'
Florence:'Of course,that's because i cook for one'.

hehe

gmku 10.05.2006 04:05 PM

I can see how the show is funny. But maybe it was the times and my situation. I just remember feeling really uncomfortable sitting there with the black woman I loved while my dad sat glued to this show--I swear he did it on purpose. He could have turned to, oh, I don't know, The Brady Bunch or something.

Pookie 10.05.2006 04:06 PM

I don't know this show. Was it an American version of Love Thy Neighbour?

Rob Instigator 10.05.2006 04:06 PM

isabel sanford is not lenny kravitz's mom. it was the other actress, the one marrie to wilis, the white neighbor. i think her character was named helen. Oh uyeah, her real name is roxie roker.

when i was little, me and my bro were latch-key, and we woudl wait for our folks to get home from work. My mo m would get home and start to cook dinner and she would always ask me or my bro to set the table just before the food was ready. it always seemed to be that I was setting the table or hearing someone set the table while the end credits rolled (where the song was hummed not sung).

ever since then, when I hear the end credit's song of the jeffersons I get instantly hungry, no matter where or when, and I salivate like pavlov's dogs. It is truly a pavlovian experiment gone wrong.

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 04:07 PM

The jeffersons is great.

Rob Instigator 10.05.2006 04:08 PM

jefferson's was a spinoff of All In The Family.

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 04:09 PM

i know that.

Pookie 10.05.2006 04:11 PM

I think the info was for me.

Cantankerous 10.05.2006 04:12 PM

oh. well now you know that too/

Pookie 10.05.2006 04:14 PM

I feel better for it.

Rob Instigator 10.05.2006 04:15 PM

Oh yeah you're right, the one who played Helen.

Savage Clone 10.05.2006 04:16 PM

I think they should have made a spinoff show for the tranny character Beverly from All In The Family, but they decided to kill her off instead.

krastian 10.05.2006 11:54 PM

Kiss my bumper, just kiss it!!!
