Whaaaa???

GeneticKiss 10.09.2006 01:44 PM

You mean plays Sonic Youth songs?

I play Mildred Pierce and the riff to Titanium Expose every once in a while...

Rovetu 10.09.2006 01:46 PM

in standard ebgdae tuning?

GeneticKiss 10.09.2006 01:47 PM

Backwards, yes...

Rovetu 10.09.2006 01:49 PM

its hard to play sy on standard tunings...the hardest song i can play of sonic youth is silver rocket

k-krack 10.09.2006 01:50 PM

...they aren'tplayed in standard, that's why.
www.sonicyouth.com/mustang , click the "Dirty Animals", and go to tabs.

Rovetu 10.09.2006 01:52 PM

ya i know, every song has its tuning (must ahve read my forum signature)

porkmarras 10.09.2006 01:53 PM

A question:once you've learned how to play the song very well what happens?

Rovetu 10.09.2006 01:56 PM

you feel well because you had your sy song in standard tuning,it isnt as exactly as the song but the sound's almost the same..you almost invent chords and all songs are unconfortable to play

Rovetu 10.09.2006 02:10 PM

I still don't get you. What is the point to just learn a song from start to finish and of all the bands.....one by Sonic Youth?I hope i don't come accross as being a pedantic person but isn't it more right to unlearn an instrument when it comes to this particular type of music?Learning a whole song by SY down to the(messed up) tunings still strikes me as missing the point of this band entirely but then..........

Savage Clone 10.09.2006 02:13 PM

Well, if you are going to cover a song, it only makes sense to do it in the tuning it was done in, no?

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:17 PM

Sure but without putting a twist into it?

Savage Clone 10.09.2006 02:19 PM

Of course it is always best to re-interpret when covering tunes.

k-krack 10.09.2006 02:19 PM

Porkie, learning songs is "practise". You can't get better at playing music if you don't play something on it. Take piano, for example. Why do you think they play four hundred year old pieces? To get better at it.

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:21 PM

Name a cover that has been covered exactly like the original that is in some way a good version. In saying that, keep in mind that i generally dislike it when bands cover other bands's songs even though there are a good few that i appreciate if not love.

Exactly and there is nothing wrong with it.It's not what i'm getting at but good point nonetheless.

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:25 PM

Refer to k-krack post above.

Savage Clone 10.09.2006 02:25 PM

I do believe Porky's point is that there is no point in playing an "exact" cover version, because without some new insight or interpretation put into it, it will never be remotely as good as the original.

I agree with this. The only possible exception would be cruise ship bands and the like, whose audience would most likely see "interpretation" as "mistakes."

Playing guitar it's jus a hobby...you just play songs that you like from groups you like, you don't get nothing...

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:30 PM

We got there just about and in saying that,i'm sure we all know that some bands can improve a song marginally just because of their musicianship.I might be wrong on this but Huske Du's cover of 'Eight Miles High' is vastly superior to the original,it's just my opinion and i'm not certainly and in no way saying that i play an instrument as well as probably some of you guys do.

It would just make it more difficult...i think almost all sy songs can be played almost as they sound with ebgdae tunning (standard tunning), exept for those songs like the burning spear, that was played with the Drifter guitar (r.i.p.) and with drumsticks between the strings

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:33 PM

My point is also that i think it is virtually impossible to play a song exactly as,say,The Velvet Underground did or Sonic Youth did.I just don't see the point in even trying but as i said,i'm a shite instrumentalist at that.

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:38 PM

Classical dudes?What's that?

Savage Clone 10.09.2006 02:40 PM

I thought you were talking about symphony players.

porkmarras 10.09.2006 02:41 PM

Oh i dunno, you lost me there.

Rovetu 10.09.2006 02:43 PM

nobody here play a lot of sy on any instrument?
