The black metal thread

It seems that a lot of people (including me) who most of the time don't listen to metal are getting into black metal, probably because once you dig a little deeper there is some really fucked up, dark shit to be found(not dark in a "look at me I'm so scary" way).

To me there is the same dark feeling in Black Metal as there is in some of Nick Cave/Birthday party, swans, early industrial, PIL and even joy division or sonic youth's Bad Moon Rising.

Other black metal I've come across remindes me of the raw fury of early hardcore.

Some of the best black metal black metal I've come across includes,

Akista
Burzum
Darkthrone
Abruptum (more industrial/noise the stuff I've come across)
Xasthur
Leviathan
Striborg
Abyssic hate

Any recommendations/favourites or thoughts?

Savage Clone 10.30.2006 09:45 AM

I have been a big black metal fan for a long time.
It's cartoonish, but so "of its own world" that I cannot help but love it.
Most of it is pretty bad, but when it's good it is so damn good.
Some favorites of mine:
Burzum
older Mayhem
Xasthur
Nortt
Nokturnal Mortum
Graveland
Lugubrum
Hurusoma
Trelldom

Everyneurotic 10.30.2006 09:45 AM

you can't say you have heard black metal if you haven't heard mayhem. and people who write metal off completely are dumb morons.

gorgoroth
sigh
early emperor
early (or latest) satyricon
deathspell omega
blut aus nort
marduk
dark funeral
dissection
early beherit
craft

Savage Clone 10.30.2006 09:52 AM

I could never get into Marduk for some reason. I love Emperor and Deathspell Omega though!
Watain is also a band I like quite a lot.

king_buzzo 10.30.2006 09:53 AM

black/death/speed metal sucks

Savage Clone 10.30.2006 09:55 AM

We weren't talking about death metal or speed metal last time I checked this thread, but thanks for your enlightening and insightfully well-written critique.

porkmarras 10.30.2006 09:58 AM

Always been fascinated by black metal, grindcore and the like but i am not an expert. At the moment i'm massively into Burzum and Leviathan thanks to you guys. Not black metal but does anyone like Cathedral?Ace band.

Everyneurotic 10.30.2006 10:00 AM

cathedral were awesome, their newest album, with the exception of the 24 minute song, is a dud. but the ethereal mirror and all those other albums? marvelous! i liked lee's singing more in napalm though.

Everyneurotic 10.30.2006 10:02 AM

did king retard just said this music sucks?

no wonder he is such an idiot.

i take marduk in small doses, i don't have an album by them but some of their songs are pretty kick ass. actually, darkthrone's the past is alive sounds very marduk-esque, sort of with that discharge/punk edge.

by the way, thanks porky for introducing me to nokturnal mortum.

AHHH i forgot wigrid!!! ace ace band! check 'em out if you like burzum.

porkmarras 10.30.2006 10:05 AM

My favourite of theirs.

Onani Nic 10.30.2006 10:07 AM

I've heard a bit of Marduk, didn't mind it but it didn't make me want to buy the album. I have trouble gettting into BM with overbearing synths and organs like Blut Aus Nord and Emperor.

Savage Clone is Lugubrum the band with the Saxophone?

Savage Clone 10.30.2006 10:07 AM

That cover art almost reminds me of a Chameleons album, of all things.

I don't remember hearing saxophone, but they do occasionally use banjo.

Everyneurotic 10.30.2006 10:11 AM

then scratch emperor, sigh and early satyricon from my list, if you don't like keyboards (although those are the bands who have prominent keyboards but actually help the songs instead of pussing them out, not like dimmu burger or cradle of shit). wigrid have keyboards but they are not overbearing, again, kinda like burzum.

HaydenAsche 10.30.2006 11:47 AM

I'm not a huge fan of any black metal really. I'm far more into harps.

So how does an American get sarcasm then? Is there a long waiting list, or were you just lucky from birth? Well done anyway. Very well done.

I have nothing more to contribute other than faint approval. I'm not an expert on the black stuff, but what I likes I likes, and won't I don't I don't.

you are giving king_buzzo too much credit, he's not clever enough to be sarcastic.

ps: confusion is sex is way darker and scarier than bad moon rising.

i saw them supporting sunno))) last year in amsterdam; they did have a saxophone i'm sure.

i'm not that much into black metal, but it can be both good or hilarious to me.
in the case of lugubrum they were alright on stage, but i remember reading their lyrics because i heard most of those were in dutch (they're from belgium) and they made me giggle a lot... i'm not sure if they were meant to.

This is just a list of silly band names, isn't it? With the obvious exception of Marblebog.

Everyneurotic 11.01.2006 09:42 AM

enslaved are not really black metal, they are viking metal and stylistically, they are quite different. i guess you can count them since it's similar enough and they were part of the original trve norwegian black metal scene.

behemoth have long since renounced black metal (with the exception of the corpsepaint), they now play death metal, and being a damn fine band in the process.

the anaal nathrakh i've heard is very meh.

yes, leviathan is pretty awesome.

i can't believe i forgot arcturus.

early behemoth is still black, i was under the impression that viking metal is one of those things like war metal that kind of isn't really a genre in it's own right more like certain bands from certain styles can also be described as viking metal.

anaal nathrakh are superb, check out the codex necro or their peel session. they're the brutalestest.

Savage Clone 11.01.2006 11:05 AM

Early Enslaved is some pretty fine Viking metal.

Oh, and pokkeherrie:
Lugubrum definitely have a sense of humor. I like that about them, because they stop just short of joke band/parody band.
They are to black metal what Alien Sex Fiend are to goth IMO.

porkmarras 11.01.2006 11:08 AM

Are Torr meant to be Viking Metal?I heard them being described as anglo-saxon Battle Metal.Reeeelly Silly.

Did anyone ever explain why or how death/ black/ thrash/ viking/ war/ etc metal aren't just absurd names thrown about to impress non-metallers?

Nah, I think they fill the 1066 metal.

golden child 11.01.2006 03:08 PM

ive really been digging a local bands cdr i picked up, leech is their name.

Everyneurotic 11.01.2006 07:58 PM

yeah, early behemoth is black metal, i actually saw them this summer and heckled them to play their bm set.

i heard anaal nathrakh's domine non es dignus and wasn't very impressed by it although i've heard nothing but unanimous approval, i'll give them another chance.

lately, enslaved have been rocking it too, isa is a superb album, i haven't picked the new one though.

that anglo-saxon description seems more like manowar than viking metal.

FURZE rule!! Heard them for the first time yesterday. It was like if Pentagram played black metal with weird delayed vocals.

I also read some review on Wolves in the Throne Room, searched out some of their music and it was pretty amazing. Also the first black metal band I've come across who I agree with politically. If I wasn't s lazy I would order their CD.

Death Metal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_metal

Black Metal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal

Thrash Metal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrash_metal

"Viking metal Viking metal is a cross-genre reference to metal bands with Norse-themed lyrics, usually about Viking tradition, culture, beliefs and other Viking related topics. As well, many people believe that there must be Scandinavian influences in the music itself to be classified as Viking metal. Most Viking metal contains black metal elements, but this is not always the case: the band Amon Amarth is rooted in the melodic death metal style, for example. There is also often overlap in Viking metal with folk metal."

list of metal genres
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heavy_metal_genres

battle/war metal is the same type of deal as viking metal, it's a cross genre thing that is concerned with the themes dealt with in the lyrics more than a stylistic musical approach. bolt thrower are an example of battle/war metal, even though stylistically they are death metal.

atsonicpark 11.05.2006 12:13 PM

I'm just saying Gorgoroth.

Death metal is where it's at for me. Fucking cryptopsy, gorerotted, visceral bleeding, severe torture, necrophagist, fuuuuck.
