Lee Ranaldo at Indie-O Fest in Mexico City, April 7th, 2012.

All info and content generated from Lee Ranaldo's performance at Polyfórum Siqueiros in Mexico City on Saturday, April 7th, 2012, should be posted here, please.

Below's the flyer for the festival. Maybe it would have been a good idea to condense everything (i.e. Thurston's show as well) in a single thread, but let's see how this works.

Pelle 04.03.2012 10:14 AM

Why make two threads about the same gig?

stu666 04.03.2012 10:14 AM

one for Lee and one for Thurston...

Pelle 04.03.2012 10:50 AM

Yeah, but is it neccesary ;) (not gonna nag about it, just sayin´, hah)

stu666 04.03.2012 11:16 AM

maybe not but it'll be easier for people who want to just read/see/hear the Lee or Thurston reviews/pics/recordings...

blunderbuss 04.03.2012 11:42 AM

I think it's necessary.

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.03.2012 12:01 PM

Pelle, please go post something irrelevant as you always do, just do it on some other thread and let this be just a recipient for good stuff. I for one do not appreciate you spewing your unreasonable, worthless bitching here. I never post two threads about the exact same thing actually, maybe you got problems to differentiate.

Pelle 04.04.2012 06:14 AM

Calm down dude, I agree though (stu said it).
I didn't mean to do a "thing" about it, I was just reflecting a bit.

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.04.2012 01:24 PM

You need to keep your "reflections" to yourself. This ain't the first time I see you complaining or otherwise questioning when it's just pointless and unnecessary, and it adds nothing to the thread other than just a senseless confrontation. People here seem to like you a lot judging by the reputation thing. You are higher than Moshe on such list (for fuck's sake), though I fail to see anything of merit in any of your posts, but that's fine just as long as you don't think you have the wit for trolling and just cut the crap from now on.

Anyway, according to Indie-O Fest, photographic cameras will be allowed, so I think I'll take mine and snap some unflattering pictures and maybe capture some High Definition video as well. We'll see. My main focus is to record audio of Lee's and Thurston's performances, though (and enjoy the shows, of course).

Did I say Toni is one of the best around here? Scratch that. She's the best. Here's some of her awesome pictures from Lee's show last night in Mexico City:
http://www.tono.tv/2012/04/08/lee-ranaldo/

Just listened to my recording. It's very clear, but the volume is kind of low, so I'll amplify it and hopefully I'll be posting it later today.

hirsute_biped 04.08.2012 01:50 PM

Can I ask what recorder you used? I'm gonna try the app you suggested at Lee's show Tuesday night.

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.08.2012 02:49 PM

Sony PCM M-10. At the moment I don't have any plug-in microphones, but the internal mics of this recorder are great. I'm just too paranoid of getting distorted results and end up setting the levels a little bit too low. I remember my levels for Lee's show last night would peak at -13db and they recommend -12db. So bugged it didn't sound as best as it could from the start. The Thurston recording sounds good, though. I'll share that one first. As for the FiRe App, I think I read somewhere that it records automatically so you don't have to worry about setting your levels correctly, but the downside of it is that records only in mono, apparently. I am not very well informed because I haven't used it myself, so please take my words with a grain of salt.

I can't wait to hear this! I know what you mean about being paranoid of getting a distorted recording, I always seem to set my levels too low but it's better than having them too high!

True, although I'm now afraid to shit things up on Audacity given that I've never done anything on it before! I'm thinking about uploading it as is. Otherwise, I'll have to google to look for information on how to do it right, and that would mean it'll take me a while to share it.

I'll try to upload the Thurston recording either today or tomorrow first thing in the morning. Also, I just took a look at the pictures my brother took and they're really beautiful. I'm dying to share those, too.

12 db low is okey dokie with the M10, and actually should be your target. It gives you a lot of headroom for unexpected loud spots and it's easy to boost in post. (this is given that you are recording at 24 bit :O )

Looking forward to hearing these sets! Were they noisy at all or pretty straight up songs n' strums, like the NYC thing?

Edited to say, would be happy to post process for you HBJ, I has about almost all of April and first part of May off on vacation, damn I love my job!

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.08.2012 04:16 PM

My highest peak on Thurston's set was -12 db and the results are nice. I always record at 24 Bits/48 KHZ no matter what. I even purchased a memory card because I intended to record Wild Flag and Kurt Vile as well, and I did. I haven't listened to those so I don't know how they turned out, though.

No noise sets at all, I'm afraid. Both Lee and Thurston performed song-based shows to promote "Between The Times And The Tides" and "Demolished Thoughts" respectively. Both of them had some noisy passages in their sets, though. Mike, If you'd be willing to make my recording of Lee's sound better, I guess I can upload it and send you the link. I just got confused with something I read: If I amplify a recording, do I have to normalize afterwards to correct possible DC Offset (I don't even know what that is)?

dc offset is pretty much a thing of the past. amplify/normalize to peaks are pretty much the same thing, I use normalize because I can specify just where I want it to amplify to, well below clipping. amplify can easily go beyond there, at least in the programs I use (cool edit pro and soundforge)

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.08.2012 04:47 PM

I'm giving it a try with Audacity now, we'll see how it goes and hopefully my ears are to be trusted. When I consider it's ready, I'll put it up. I gotta figure this shit out.

ilduclo 04.08.2012 04:54 PM

just don't normalize to "average" or "rms loudness" only to peaks.....should be really clean sound with only 12 -13 db boost. I've gone 18+ and had the quiet spot sound pretty crystal clear..

one more suggestion, save your original as an unedited flac, that will give you the chance to look at it in the future with diff software, etc.

Will do. Thanks, Mike!

Anyway, the few thoughts I can articulate about Lee Ranaldo's recent performance in Mexico City: I saw every band, and really think they all gave their very best. Kurt Vile And The Violators and Wild Flag were incredible, with so much energy; but they were followed by City And Colour who preceded Lee Ranaldo on the bill, and that was an anticlimax to me. It really bored the living shit out of me, I almost got asleep. A lot of people were really excited by that performance, though. When they were over and Lee got onstage to set up his gear and do soundcheck, I felt that my soul returned to my body. He kind of glows. He was in a happy, talkative mood and that made me happy, too. His set was short but sweet and heavily focused on songs from "Between The Times And The Tides", an awesome cover of The Talking Heads' "Thank You From Sending Me An Angel" was performed as well but he didn't dwell in any of his Sonic Youth songs. He shared candid background stories behind some of the songs, too (wait to hear the recording). The show has reached a climax on the last two songs which had some bursts of noise. It really seemed that the best was to come but Lee announced that "Waiting On A Dream" would be the last one due to time constraints. I'm sad to find out I missed "Genetic", but on the other hand I'm really grateful that Lee was able to play these new songs here, with so much energy and great vibes.

Here's some pictures from the evening:

This is the link to the whole set of pictures. I can't upload them to flickr at the moment because my 300 MB monthly limit has been fully used, so facemook will have to suffice. If it doesn't work for everyone, let me know, and I'll try to upload to my photofuckit, too (If I can retrieve my password).

My recording of Lee Ranaldo at Indie-O Fest is now up at dimeadozen:

LEE RANALDO -Polyfórum Cultural Siqueiros, Indie-O Fest, Mexico City, April 7th, 2012 (24 Bits/48 KHZ FLAC)

Thanks so much to ilduclo for his most valuable advice. My recording sounds a lot better now than it initially did after just some slight normalization on Soundforge. In retrospect, I should have done the same thing to my capture of Thurston's performance.

Those of you without an account at dimeadozen, please have me some patience. I'll be providing a Wetransfer link shortly.

Pacafeliz, I think I'm not wrong in assuming you have a video recording of Thurston Moore, Tom Surgal & William Winant's legendary performance in Mexico City back in 2006. Please, by all means, share it or otherwise hit me up for a trade. I would kill for it. Anyway, thanks in advance for sharing your pics as well.

I'd sure like an audio off of that if it's decent sound quality. I've got nothing with TM & TS in my hands since the late 90's!!

I'm not aware of any audio sources in existence, but it was filmed by the organizers who wouldn't ever share anything for any reason, and Pacafeliz has claimed in the past that he did an audience (incomplete) video capture as well, which remains uncirculated in DVD format. That was a superlative performance, it could easily give "Piece For Jetsun Dolma" a run for its money.

ilduclo 04.13.2012 09:53 PM

I've found it pretty easy to scrape the audio off of dvd's, that is, if the sound quality warrants it. an '06 would be great to have, if you ever get ahold of it!

hipster_bebop_junkie 04.14.2012 01:13 AM

Let's hope Pacafeliz would hook us up!

Anyway, here's my recording of Lee Ranaldo's performance in Mexico City for those without access to dimeadozen. Hope you guys enjoy!

Bump.

Lee Ranaldo's video for Hifiklub's new single, "Blood In Music", includes some candid footage of Mexico City as well as a brief appearance of Thurston and his band performing at Indie-O Fest, amongst other things:

Pacafeliz 05.07.2012 11:52 PM

hey folks, sorry for just disappearing like that... LOTS of work, etc.
but yes i do still have quite a lot of that moore/surgal/winant video, but with a TERRIBLE sound quality.
some of it is on youtube, but the longer vids were too long, back then. i'll see if it works now or if i (somehow) chop it into smaller pieces...
stay tuned for them pics, too!

Pat.
