Joanna Newsom, Ys

Wow, best album of the year. Even better than Rather Ripped.

screamingskull 11.14.2006 11:27 AM

ive never ever heard anything by her, what her music like?, she's gatting alot of good press lately and Jim O'rouke obviously likes her so she can't be that bad.

The Usher 11.14.2006 11:50 AM

No, No NO! I tried to like her, but it's just misery. She is no good, do you hear me, no good. I wish I could sow her mouth up to stop her noise.

porkmarrass 11.14.2006 11:52 AM

I'm gonna wait till Glice posts something and then parrot his opinion.

screamingskull 11.14.2006 11:53 AM

Oh and 'At war with the mystics' was the best album of this year, not rather ripped.

porkmarrass 11.14.2006 11:54 AM

There's some truth in that.

Savage Clone 11.14.2006 11:58 AM

Hate. Her. Voice.

Very talented player though.

jon boy 11.14.2006 12:03 PM

She sounds like a childish Ethel Merman singing American fables while playing a bad-ass harp.

HaydenAsche 11.14.2006 04:48 PM

Haven't heard it. Milk-Eyed Mender was fucking fantastic. I rest assured it is a damn good album.

i just got an email from a distro listing there new arrivals, this being one of them. was actually going to pm you about it, hayden, since your a fan of her.....

HaydenAsche 11.14.2006 04:54 PM

Thanks, Math. I don't have PMs anymore, however. Chabib took them away as he's jealous of me.

m^a(t)h 11.14.2006 04:54 PM

this girl just played at the warhol on saturday, but i didnt attend, sort of bummed but i was busy making a film......

nicfit 11.15.2006 04:26 AM

for those who care, steve albini recorded, jim o rourke mixed and another "influent-guy-i-cant-remember" arranged strings.

screamingskull 11.15.2006 07:04 AM

woah, you're right her voice is horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daycare Nation 11.15.2006 07:00 PM

Her voice is one of the best ever.

Anngella 10.04.2007 03:16 PM

I just got Ys. Though I wanted Milk-Eyed Mender, I am very very happy with Ys. Her lyrics are some of the best I've heard. And her voice is amazing, I loved it right when I heard it. Though I hear it's an acquired taste.

jon boy 10.04.2007 03:20 PM

she is good live. i like the way she came out onstage shouting and clapping her hands. apparantly she does that because she is nervous and it gets rid of it all.

she's also maried to bill callahan (smog) lucky fucker.

Savage Clone 10.04.2007 03:37 PM

I saw her live once. Her woman-child persona made me twitch with silent rage. Her voice is incredibly abrasive to me. She is a very good harpist, but keep that music away from me.

Edit:
Should have read the thread.I said this exact same thing on the previous page way back when. Apologies.

davenotdead 10.04.2007 07:32 PM

i didnt like her at all...then it just clicked...her voice does take some getting used to...Swansea is one of the most beautiful songs ever

val-holla-ing 10.04.2007 07:42 PM

i love milk-eyed mender still, but Ys....i still can't listen to it for enjoyment. i can appreciate it, and it's really grown on me since it came out, but i still can't like it, per se.

davenotdead 10.04.2007 07:45 PM

i thing MEM has slightly better high points, but Ys is a more focused album...I dont know which is more enjoyable...but I would call Ys the better album...its like its own world...

pbradley 10.04.2007 08:13 PM

Bores the living shit outta me.

As for the vocals, I'd rather listen to Kristin Hersh.

hahaha. that's funny.

joanna newsome makes me want to cut my ears off.

pbradley 10.04.2007 08:41 PM

I remember I got a sticker for At War With The Mystics when I bought the Fearless Freaks dvd and I put it on my bass.

And then I promptly tore it off once I heard it.

This is a cautionary tail, kids.

Yeah, it's like they took that kids song they did for the sponge bob square pants movie and made an album out of it.

wow. that sums it up better than anything i've ever heard.

atsonicpark 10.04.2007 11:24 PM

This album isn't my thing, persé, but it's obviously amazing -- just not something I want to listen to all the time. Her voice is amazing, this album isn't boring in the least, and her harp playing is phenomenal. Really, there's nothing wrong with it, I just don't have the urge to put it in very much. Milk-Eyed Mender was much better.

Not sure what the criticism with her voice is; you guys can take nasally-ass Corgan, boring-ass Mascis, or .. Bjork, just.. Bjork.. but you can't take a chick with a great voice who can actually sing? Her voice is beautiful! Some of you are crazy.

terminal pharmacy 10.04.2007 11:48 PM

have to spread some rep around before giving it to atsonic again.........

atsonicpark 10.04.2007 11:59 PM

Thanks, but don't say that too loud; some people here dislike people who don't worship the indie rock mainstay bullshit... :)

I'm pretty sure I am on record as loathing the voice and/or vocal stylings of all three of your examples.
I don't like squeaky voices. While we're at it, I will mention again my allergic reaction to Kate Bush, Tori Amos, etc.
She is a very talented player and I would never say she "sucks," but that doesn't mean I can't find her music appalling on a personal taste level.
