Bands that should have broke the mainstream but never did
Pavement
|
"Cut Your Hair" was a freaking top ten hit.
|
supposedly shonen knife
supposedly sonic youth supposedly, hm, someone else. why? |
ha ha. this thread is going big.
|
Kak (60s west coast psych, very good, totally accessible)
|
EDIT: that was stupid
|
Clipse, but they still may. Produced by the neptunes, so I would assume they will sooner or later
|
Pentagram should have been huge in the mid 70s-early 80s.

oooh! pentagram! poor guys... i was outside their last concert buying tickets. when i heard it was them i opted to say outside. and a good thing it was, aesthetic reasons aside/; the guy apparently was taken away in an ambulance. |

You music taste really knows no fear, does it? Urusei Yatsura and Stony Sleep would've been enormous if they came out about 5 years after they did. In fact, there was a load of bands that weren't britpop bands that should've been huge over here. It always surprised me that Gene weren't bigger. I know lots of people hate them, but I think they're as good as a lot of things. Certainly more appealing to me than Suede, who had a better image but, to my mind, not the tunes. "The Britpop sins of Glice, episode 1". |
I tell you what, shall I say MBV ironically so that everyone can have fun calling me a cunt?
MBV should've been bigger. |
How could Pentagram not have been a good candidate for arena-rock success in the 70s and early 80s? Loud as shit, evil, not good-looking, heavy riffage? They were better than Dio Sabbath for sure.
|
Helen Love! Fucking Helen Love. In a just world they'd be where Oasis are now. And Bis. FUCK OFF. I like Bis.
|
Gene bigger than Suede?Someone is just being contrary.
|
Glice, I didn't know you liked such cutesy music.
|
I learnt to be contrary from the best, sweety.
I LIKE GENE. Is that such a crime? |
Quote:
It's not cutesy. There's the beating black heart of a goth underneath Helen Love's oh-so-indie exterior. Or, alternately, I was 14 once, and I'm not going to pretend I don't still have a little 14 year old in me [insert pederast inference]. |
Quote:
Yeah, well one can be goth and cutesy at the same time. I give you this "Autumn" comic as proof. This is a fine comic series, by the way. ![]() ![]() |

I think the problem I have with Suede is very similar to the thing I have about the Manics. I don't mind Richey-era Manics, but I would never, ever say that in public (well, apart from here, obviously). Manics and Suede fans are a dire breed. Not as in people who like the music, but those weird little culty types. All leapard print, horrific eyeliner and anorexia chic.

the pooh sticks
|
practically all suede songs start the same way and the singer (forgot his name) always starts the song with a 'well'.

Actually Clipse is mainstream, they were all over the top ten about 4 years ago. ('' Grinidin' '', ''What Happened To That Boy'' and a few others... |
The Beatles.

Oh yeah. I used to be a fan of theirs (bare in mind I was a hormonal teenager around the time of their first album) but their fans pissed me off. And the second album didn't have a ghost writer, so it wasn't as good. Little known industry fact there. |
