Your Favorite LPs of 2006?
Well less than one month left in the year so its time to pick what were your favorite (and least favorite) records that came out this year. Not only can this thread show opinions but maybe expose people to some great records they might not have noticed or overlooked.
Built To Spill- You In Reverse (album of the year in my opinion.Every song is great. a strong return for them) Neil Young- Living With War (this come in a close second.Neil put a lot of heart in this album.Has some of his best electric guitar work in years. It was interesting how he took the perspective of war from different angles.Love that opener "after the garden", veyr poignant) Witch- S/T (great stuff.Mascis is one hell of a drummer. You'll like it if you like sabbath, although the songs aren't always as slow as there's.Some mind scrambling guitar solos on it) Mudhoney- Under a Billion Suns (better than SWBT.Key songs:endless yesterday, blind spots, empty shells, it is us, hard on for war) Pillows- My Foot ( fans of flcl should know this band. yes, they released a record this year too and it was good. Insanely catchy songs, a great instrumental "march of the gods" and a beautiful orchestrated track "so long universe") Sonic Youth- Rather Ripped (although not as good as nurse, still worth being on the list.I liked the record.Favorite songs :Rats, Torquoise boy,Jams Run Free, what a waste) Bob Dylan -Modern Times (a late classic for dylan. Some of his best lyrics in years and best melodies.Has a kickass muddy waters cover on it) I still have to hear: Mission of Burma: Obliterati Comets On Fire- Avatar so any word on that will be heard! |

I agree. There was still some stuff I liked but nothing I fell head over heels for. I "like" Rather Ripped, I am not afraid of you and I will beat your ass, Drum's Not Dead, but I don't love any of them. I take that back--I love the new STNNNG album. Love it. And it's just a local Minneapolis band. I also really like the American Hardcore soundtrack, but that's a comp of old stuff. Most of the stuff I bought this year that I really like are reissues. The best reissues this year are the Wire LPs and Metal Box. |

it occurs to me i haven't bought much new stuff this year
exceptional - Erase Errata - Nightlife great - SY - Rather Ripped (much better live) Mika Miko - C.Y.S.L.A.B.F. Les Georges Leningrad - Sangue Puro Charalambides - A Vintage Burden Christina Carter - Electrice Bardo Pond - Ticket Crystals Good - Cat Power - The Greatest Be Your Own Pet - eponymous Awesome Color - eponymous (better live, and even greater when aaron mullen joined in at portland, and thurston rocked thru "free man" in brooklyn) Disapointing - AIDS Wolf - The Lovvers Lp (just soured on them, and i find Chloe a bit annoying and gossipy) still yet to hear some stuff like TLASILA - Noon and Eternity and not yet released Nas - Hip Hop is Dead?, is looking to one of the years best |
i too enjoyed the charalambides effort. also enjoyed chris corsano some sunburned hand of the man and mv/ee and the bummer road. magik markers, boris and sunn o)) too.
|
Rather Ripped is a bit watery i have to admit.

Shogun Kunitoki - Tasanokokaiku
Six organs of admittance! OOIO - Taiga Liars! Mogwai both albums! |

Great minds.....hehehe Anyways Rather Ripped was ok, and actually better than a lot of other stuff released but ''ok'' for a Sonic Youth album is still dissappointing to me. I suppose what I'm getting at is that I was expecting something completely different and the ''ok''ness of the album stems from the fact that it is completely different from the Youth's stand-point. To me rather ripped sounds like the album you would have expected them to make in place of NYC Ghosts&Flowers, you know the album after all their gear had been ripped off. And tell me about DJ Shadow...What the hell man! I understand he wanted to stretch out into something different but ''KrUnK''? Ditto your thoughts on the Lips album, save for maybe three or four songs its not good. |
In no particular order
Six Organs Of Admittance - The Sun Awakens Boris - Pink Boris/SunnO))) - Altar Michael Yonkers and the Blind Shake - Carbohydrates Hydrocarbons Seawhores - Forest Current 93 - Black Ships Nurse With Wound - Stereo Wastelands Paul Metzger/Ben Chasny-Chris Corsano split LP More post-caffeination. |
Still got 25 days of listening to go.
|
The New Pere Ubu
The Embryonnck record The Sunroof!/Double Leopards/Mouthus split 2lp the 3lobed subscription thing |
Liars - Drum's Not Dead
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain |
It has been a good year for "post-rock" things, i like the latest releases of the following bands
mono paik red sparowes isis Lily Allen and Lady Sovereing put out good records too. JT and Fergie were quite disappointing, in my opinion Nelly Furtado's Loose is quite good. I'll think anout some more good things to add. peace. |
new TVOTR is good, but it has not the same atmosphere of the first album (and i loved its "mood")
Made Out Of Babies' "trophy" is good too. Burial self titled is GREAT. |
Quote:
i completely forgot about the new OOIOO even though i was listening to it two days ago. it's so good, even my girlfriend likes it...and she usually hates that kind of stuff. |
I just got the Game's "Doctors Advocate"
|
Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped
Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along The Highway |

CLIPSE - HELL HATH NO FURY
|
Quote:
Amazing album. I don't know which I like better; that or The Documentary. Both are on my Christmas list. RipFrey - Hell hath no fury is such a trill album! I love it that the Neptunes do all their beats, and it's produced completely differently than any of their other beats. |
Quite a few of my favorite albums of the past year are obscure enough that I feel like I need to link to the bands as I doubt any of you have likely heard of them. A lot of the best music is being made under the radar right now (actually always.) There are a few bigger indie releases that were good too.
Legendary Pink Dots - Your Children Placate You from Premature Graves Black Happy Day - In the Garden of Ghost Flowers King Kong Ding Dong - s/t Orbit Service - Songs of Eta Carinae Hunny - Synaesthesia Pere Ubu - Why I Hate Women Yo La Tengo - I'm Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass Wolf Eyes - Human Animal (which surprises me, as they've never overly impressed me before) Reek of Influence comp on Icky Recordings (full disclosure, my band is on it, but I like the rest of it at least as much) Women Take Back the Noise comp on Ubuibi (fucking awesome - 3 discs and not one bad track!) Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (not my all time fave, but still a damn good record) Celebration s/t (actually came out in 2005, but I just saw them and got it) War of the Species compilation on Severed by Records (no URL!) Gowns - Dangers of Intimacy Childhood Friends - Scars (not actually out yet, but they're my friends so I have an advance copy) Acid Mother's Temple - The Other Side of the Sky Oregone compilation on Oregone label Zoe Keating - One Cello x 16: Natoma Oliver Squash - s/t e.p. George & Caplin - Things Past Gricer - s/t Skullflower - Tribulation |

I still haven't heard it, but everything I heard about it is good. I just got into Ubu after WIRE did the review on them, and I picked up 30 seconds over tokyo, and was totally amazed. I'm looking forward to listen to more material from them. They change their sound and members completely through the years, and they maintain a consistant, rich sound. Good stuff. |
