Christmas albums

I can only think of two worthwhile Christmas albums - Low's, and the Phil Spector one. Are there any others in existence, or am I destined to have those two on repeat play every Christmas Day for the rest of my life?

apart from low, the beach boys and jackson five the rest can all fuck right off.

so far i have avoided all xmas songs this year.

although an annoying woman at the other end of the office has just started to play some as i type this.

marleypumpkin 12.14.2006 08:41 AM

Nat King Cole - "The Christmas Song"

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - "Christmas w/ The Miracles"

etc, etc...There's actually some decent x-mas albums out there. & don't forget the legendary Charlie Brown christmas music. A real smooth jazz style x-mas album is always good.

A Thousand Threads 12.14.2006 08:49 AM

What about the Sonics?

What was that record called? Donīt believe in Christmas or something like that.
with Santa Clause and The Village Idiot on it
itīs pretty good

jon boy 12.14.2006 08:52 AM

they can all fuck right off i tell you.

I haven't heard them.

There are two that I own: The Perry Como Christmas Album and Christmas With the Salvation Army (strange title, I always think) by the Salvation Army International Staff Band. The latter is my favourite.

(it's an old vinyl thing, so it might not be available anymore, but I could tape it if you're interested).

dietzer123 12.14.2006 11:37 PM

the vandals oi to the world will always be, in my humble opinion, the greatest christmas album of all time

hirsute_biped 12.15.2006 12:24 AM

i used to have another johnny cash one, maybe compiled on the one pictured here, w/ some dark stuff on it, like johnny reciting an edna st. vincent millay poem about burning all the furniture in the house to stay warm. still wish i had bought the radio shack johnny cash electronic talking bible when i had the chance. circuit bend that thing, buddy.

also the first two john fahey christmas ones, "a new possibility", and "christmas vol. 2", except the ruck ruskin collaborations. he sucks. the others are probably for completists such as myself.

i always wanted to do a twisted heavey psych version of frosty the snowman, maybe i still will...

hirsute_biped 12.15.2006 12:32 AM

oh yeah, and that burroughs/kobain "junkie's christmas" ep. not that i liked it last time i heard it. used to love it though, back in high school when i was obsessed w/ nirvana and thought heroin was cool. boy was that dumb. burroughs had a thanksgiving rack on the "dead city radio" album too. lots of holiday spirit in that man, just oozed out of him.

flaming lips: christmas at the zoo (i think it was called) off of clouds taste metallic...

Norma J 12.15.2006 12:57 AM

I'm downloading the Phil Spector one - Thanks Sonicl.

Tried to find the Jackson 5, Charlie Brown, and Johnny Cash one, but to no avail. Anybody got a link?

Nice nice! My brother's getting some of his stuff really soon. I like how he'd argue with John Lennon about things like bananas, and I'm interested in hearing what he does of his own

Norma J 12.15.2006 02:44 AM

I just downloaded Frank Sinatras christmas album. It's x-masly fantastic.

Excluding 1976-1991, when he produced roughly 60+ albums of utter gack. Me and a friend, between us, have around 80 Johnny Cash albums (we figured that for one person to have a near-complete collection was impossible, but spread between two it's a lot easier) and there is an unbelievable amount of dross in there. Seriously, he puts Dylan to shame in terms of shit-period bad albums. I should add that I've only got around 20 albums of his. Unfortunately, there's the odd pile-of-crock album that contains the odd gem. Stampede! (Stampede).

sonikold 12.15.2006 03:57 PM

this is the time of year when i hate going inside any public building because i know they're going to be playing the soft rock christmas radio station. fucking baby jesus stealing the holiday, it's not even his damn birthday.

sonikold 12.16.2006 01:31 AM

holy shit... korean psych freaks san ul lim have a kick ass cover of "jingle bells" with fuzz guitar. will put it up later when i have a faster internet connection. it rocks.

Thomas Moronic 12.17.2006 07:54 AM

Stop/Eject records did a really good CD-R a while back called All I Want For Christmas is Bowel Disrupting Noise, or something similar. They had really good noise artists like Baron Bumblood sampling Slade songs.

sonicl 12.18.2006 04:44 AM

I came across one of the Johnny Cash Christmas CDs yesterday, so that's been added to my small collection. I haven't had the chance to listen to much of it yet, but it has some quality tunes on it:

1. Blue Christmas
2. The Little Drummer Boy
3. The Christmas Spirit 0
4. I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
5. Away In A Manger
6. Joy To The World
7. Silent Night
8. Christmas As I Knew It
9. Ringing The Bells For Jim
10. Here Was A Man
11. The Gifts They Gave
12. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
13. O Come All Ye Faithful
14. Little Gray Donkey
15. The Christmas Guest
16. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
17. The Ballad Of The Harp Weaver
18. Who Kept The Sheep
19. (There'll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me)
20. That Christmasy Feeling

compulsive diarrhea, jico 12.18.2006 09:38 AM

i like john fahey...

Don't know about a proper record. But these old Andy Williams etc. recordings are quite nice.
