I Am In Need Of Some Good Music.

I'm sick of my collection. I've heard everything about 20 times. Help me out. If you had to recommend one or two bands to someone, what would they be?

Danny Himself 12.14.2006 06:33 PM

Public Enemy, Barrington Levy. That's two.

Better_Than_You 12.14.2006 06:37 PM

Thanks

porkmarras 12.14.2006 06:39 PM

Overhang Party
Yat-Kah
Size
Zoroaster
Katharsis
Ellen Marguiles
Dufus
Tyro Din

Danny Himself 12.14.2006 06:43 PM

Booker T and the M.Gs, Daniel Johnston. The jazz forays of the Violent Femmes. The Muffs!

le porcs:

i posted you this in the other thread but in case you are deeply offended by my tone-deafness and won't look at it anymore, i was thinking you might like this:

http://www.matadorrecords.com/mpeg/b...rybody_new.mp3

!@#$%! 12.14.2006 06:52 PM

oh. i myself am not a fan but i thought your like of psychedelia might allow for that. those hippies live more or less near me, by the way.

Savage Clone 12.14.2006 07:26 PM

You call this psychedelia?
You are tone deaf!

Not bad actually, but I wouldn't call it psychedelia exactly.

Although I heartily approve of Yat-Kha, and I would even recommend Albert Kuvezin's solo covers record, to recommend them over the mighty Huun Huur Tu is, frankly, wrong.

Sizzla
Lady Saw
Beenie Man
Elephant Man
Ward 21
Capleton
Buju Banton
Ghost
Bounty Killa.

You should investigate all of the above.

Savage Clone 12.14.2006 07:34 PM

Beenie Man?

O Glice!!!!!
Say it ain't so!

Glice 12.14.2006 07:36 PM

Dude, seriously, ignore the proffesor, get back to the early stuff. He'll put out a decent 7/ dub every now and again, but the earlier stuff (i.e. before he started courting Grammys) is stone cold dub-a-licious.

Edit: The fact that you picked out Beenie Man makes me wonder if you've heard Ward 21 or Lady Saw.

porkmarras 12.14.2006 07:37 PM

Nah you're both wrong.Get this,it's ace.

I haven't, but I have had the enormous displeasure of hearing Buju Banton.

Porkmarras: Hott.

Glice 12.14.2006 07:40 PM

Buju Banton is a total cock, as are most dancehall types, but I'm not going to stop listening to them because I like listening to them and it's taken me forever to get the swing of what they're singing. Homophobes, yes, but I'd rather homophobes and murderous racists (cf black metal) than white boys with fringes.

Savage Clone 12.14.2006 07:41 PM

Believe it or not, it was the music and not the message that I found so repellent.
You're English though, so you have a biological soft spot for this sort of thing, and I accept that.

Glice 12.14.2006 07:42 PM

You mean the English like dancing?

Savage Clone 12.14.2006 07:44 PM

Do you deny that there is and has been some kind of enduring fascination in the UK for dub, reggae, dancehall and other Jamaican-flavo(u)red musical dishes?

Glice 12.14.2006 07:47 PM

We haven't had a big Jamaican tune here since Mr Vegas (although Elephant Man had a club hit). We do like it, and there's a big dancehall scene, but it's not very big amongst those not descended from West Indies types. Everyone loves Marley though. He's the black Bob Dylan...

Savage Clone 12.14.2006 07:48 PM

I was way into On-U Sound stuff in the late 80s.

Glice 12.14.2006 07:48 PM

Shit, sorry, yes, with you now. Yes, British dance music is entirely indebted to a lot of Reggae and Dub, but then, American hip-hop is to. You never came up with Jungle though. There's a (non-) fight to have - Who makes the best dance music?

I think Shearwood (sp?) still lives in Bristol. That's very, very near me y'know?
