Wookiepedia is interesting IMO.

In my Star Wars nerdiness- I only consider the original theatrical trilogy canon.

i still haven't figured out what star wars is about.

Star Wars: A New Hope is about a new hope for peace in the galaxy -Luke Skywalker, his adventures leading up to his joining the Rebellion, learning of his ability to use the Force, and the friends(Leia, Han, Chewie, the late Obi-wan, r2, 3po) and enemies (Darth Vader) he makes a long the way.

Empire Strikes Back is about the dark side of the force and the repercussions of the Rebels destroying the Death Star and bringing the wrath of the Empire down upon them. Luke Skywalker is a big target for the Empire now because he is becoming a Jedi- who were all but extinct and once protected the galaxy. He also finds out the bad guy- Darth Vader is his Dad. Also, there is a budding romance between Leia and Han, who get separated by Han's capture and stasis in frozen carbonite at the end of the movie (he is freed in Return)

Return of the Jedi- is about Luke becoming a Jedi and accepting what that means- not giving into hate and killing Vader, but surrendering, and allowing Vader to repent. Meanwhile, the Empire gets their ass kicked. And Oh yeah, Leia is Luke's sister. Oh, and Han thinks Leia is in love with Luke, until he finds out, and then he's like- oh fraternal love, I get it- I get sex tonight!

with the exception of the major key points, it seems like the same thing happening over and over.
